You don't by chance think that maybe, just maybe, the book is more of a humor-category, mock-history type of thing? I think the reviewers first problem is missing the entire point of it...

Hell, a quick search on Amazon (where's the slash referral link? you're losing $$ for the company!), and viewable on the front cover is a bit of a clue, "The Lost Blogs: From Jesus to Jim Morrison--The Historically Inaccurate and Totally Fictitious Cyber Diaries of Everyone Worth Knowing." No wonder the teal/white comments are more interesting than the main story.

Quick show of hands, how many families had a PS2 as their DVD? Sure, I can see the Slashdot crowd (single males primarily) having that sort of setup in their living room. But (perpare to be shocked!) most of the country/world are comprised of other demographics. None of my adult friends with kids have had that sort of setup. Stand-alone players are where the money is.

HD televisions are getting into a reasonable price range for many folks ($700-1000). Cable companies provide them with an adequate number of HD channels (and on-demand shows) to view in HD on that new TV. But will they spend 50-70% the price of that TV for a movie player, or will they stick with the $25 DVD player they can get at Wal-Mart? Remember, normal folks outside of here aren't going to throw chairs across the room when they see one frame with pixelated squares...

Currently, you can get many HDDVD movies for around $15. You do have to put some effort, look around, wait for sales, etc. If you must have some movie the day it is released, sure you'll spend the full price. If you wait a little while, there will be sales like buy-one-get-one-free sales, 20 movies from one studio for $14.99, etc. So they are currently quite close to standard DVD prices.

Hell, if HDDVD really died off, you could clean up and have weeks of movies to watch when they're in the $5 bin.

Let's see, HDDVD player for $150, comes with 5-10 free movies promotions, buy another 20 movies over the next year for $15 .. That's $450. Go to Sony's side of things, $400 for a player (PS3 or stand-alone players I've seen in ads are the same price), and say you get similar sales on movies, 20 * $15, that's $700. Yup, it sure sucks that I'll be ridiculed on blogs on this here Interwebtube-o-sphere, but I've got some change left over.

A bit off-topic, but can BluRay standalone players play regular DVDs? I know my HD-DVD player can, and they make the combo standard/HD discs. That seems like a great way for people to slowly make the transition.

Consider the recent "Mortal Kombat Murder" in Johnstown, Colorado (teenagers beat and killed a 7 year old they were babysitting). Every news source Google returned on the murder called it that. Yet, they include the one line the boy said when asked why he didn't stop when she cried, "I don't know, I was drunk." In all the articles, it was deduced that Mortal Kombat was the primary factor in the beating... Therefore, video games must be stopped.

I can see you saying that watching TV is a lazy activity. But, the statement, "they become even more lazy," would indicate that they are doing even less activity. The only thing less active than watching TV would have to be sitting on the couch watching nothing (not even the walls). So, TV cannot make one "more lazy."

  15. Re:The Oddest thing on Many Analog TV Watchers Aren't Aware of Upcoming Switchover · · Score: 3, Interesting

Perhaps you are not aware, but televisions can be used to view things besides OTA signals. Many households (even ones that cannot afford/want cable) have DVD players, VCRs, video game systems, etc. If people buy a new television, the old ones are far more likely to get relegated to such duties well before being tossed into the landfill.

Hell, the last few times I tried to put some electronic devices (broken dvd player, monitor that would not power on, etc) on the street for garbage pickup, it was snatched by someone driving past. So, not even that junk makes it to a landfill.
