As a simple example, take 'if (!ptr)' instead of 'if (ptr==NULL)'. The reason someone might use the former code snippet is because they believe it would result in smaller machine code if the compiler does not do optimizations or is not smart enough to optimize the particular code snippet
Sorry, but any developer that thinks that there'll be a significant difference in the code generated by either statement is either using a compiler written by a child, or is a moron.
(does a free ADC account give you the right to get Tiger betas, or do you need more access
If someone else transfers an extra seed key to you, then yes, you do get access to pre-release software. However, there are very specific circumstances in which a seed key can be transfered. (this isn't one of them)
Also, this guy didn't realize that he wasn't supposed to do "that" because he never even read an NDA
Then he shouldn't have agreed to it. Plain and simple.
The problem isn't that he pirated software--Everyone and their mom does that. The problem is that he broke a contract. Period.
He signed something that says "I will not do that"; Then he did "that". It doesn't matter whether "that" is distributing software, selling stock, or hopping on one foot through a crowded subway. He agreed that he wouldn't do it.

That's a lot harder to use/manage than a key, especially since people generally only need a couple of keys (home, car, maybe work) as opposed to dozens if not more of passwords (home system, work system, web email, web site registrations, etc).
The simple solution to that is to just use the same password everywhere:)
Maybe you didn't read wrong, but if that is the case, then they wrote wrong. If they wrote that the iPod doesn't show up as a standard mass-storage USB device, then they are flat wrong.
I've been using iPods as storage devices since the original 5GB model. Hell, I've had bootable partitions with disk repair tools on my iPod that I've used as rescue disks. I guess I was just imagining that if your magazine says otherwise.
I was then informed that it was possible to obtain a "free online ADC account". I figured that there couldn't be any harm in signing up for one, so I did.
He signed up for an ADC account; to do so, you need to agree to not distribute any seeded software...
I later found a seed-key sitting in my ADC account, sent by that individuals friend. I used it to download the Tiger build 8A323. When I mentioned it to a few people in various IRC chat rooms, they had asked if they could get a copy too. I made the foolish assumption that since I wasn't a developer, and I had a copy that it would be ok if I shared it with 5 or 6 fellow mac fanatics.
He then downloaded the Tiger seed and distributed it. Seems pretty cut and dry
Some companies view a buggy leak as an opportunity to generate free buzz about the final product. Some view it as an opportunity to use the legal system to bludgeon extreme enthusiasts that have allegedly crossed the line.
This is completely irrelevant. In order to get the pre-release builds, we have to sign a legally-binding agreement that states, among other things, that we will not redistribute the seeds that we get. This has nothing to do with copyright, it has nothing to do with free publicity. This is about contract law, it is about people signing contracts, and entering into agreements that they have no intention of upholding.
I would assume that it does, as USB audio is pretty standard across the board. I would be quite surprised if this required any special drivers (esp. considering that MacOS 9 is supported).
I saw a new 364 day calendar just the other day that kept the day of the year on the same weekday every year. Why not?
Umm, because our calendar would get further and further out of synch with reality every year...
Or perhaps it's finally time for a metric calendar? Or, better yet, continuously variable clocks rather than these arbitrary 24 time zones?
Hmmm, what a horrible idea. How would anybody keep the time straight? Are you expecting average Joe to know at exactly what longitudes his work, home, doctor's office, etc. are? Just so he can get there on time?
"Your meeting was at Noon! It's 12:02 You're late!"
"Well, I commute 40 miles, so in my home timezone, it's only 11:59."
Files de-protected by Hymn are indistinguishable from the non-DRM'ed AAC files that you get when you rip directly from CD.... since I figured Real used some of the code from this app.
Why would you assume that? They do two completely different things. Hymn strips DRM out of the files, while Real got iPods to play the files *with their* DRM in the files.
How would they know which item to delete? The buyer and seller exchange money, and only then do they let each other know their in-game character names. Then, inside the game, the seller's character gives the item to the buyer's character. With no way to link the in-game transaction to the real-life transaction.
gravity -- noone knows what it is. A wave, a distortion of the space-time continuum, just that stuff that seems to make matter want to stick together.
light -- what is that? A particle, a wave, energy, mass? Dunno.
life -- what is that? some kind of self perpetuating thing that makes some matter more important than other matter? What is really the difference between a dead organism and a live one? Seriously, I don't know.
time -- love that stuff. Is it linear, relative, or does it even exist? AFAIK, we talk about "now" in terms of both the past and the future. Clearly the past does not exist. Clearly the future does not exist. So now is what now?
You're missing the point. All of those outstanding questions are about the nature of those things, not about their existence. Their existence is well established, and backed up by empirical evidence. The same cannot be said for the existence of God (or any other supernatural being)
Yes, all of those are outrageous claims, but we have evidence that all of those things exist. That is the key difference between the God/unicorn category of claims, and the light/gravity category of claims.
It could, but it doesn't. The following is illegal in C++, period: char * c = (void*)0;
Actually, in C, NULL can be (0), just like in C++
Actually, it's because, in C++, there is no implicit conversion from (void*) to any other pointer type; as there is in C

Maybe I should buy SCO stock, so I can get in on the impending class-action suit :)

Nope, all US bills are exactly the same size and shape (2.61 inches by 6.14 inches).

Umm, If he's 18 now, then he was 13 five years ago. So, if his birthday is after June 30th, then it was called Verizon at that time.
