I agree with that. The sadness in that scenario is it will take "radicals" because those are the only ones willing to try something, most people just waddle along. So then they topple the existing system, install themselves, and we repeat the process again 100 years later.

The example was supposed to show how a brute force effort can be made if a cracker has a set of hashed passwords. Guess it flew over your head because you heard Windows and went into YEAH BUT LINUX mode. It was supposed to show why a salt is so important, which you obviously understand, yet you missed the point of the article.. hrm. Strange. If a cracker has your auth database with the hashes then they can brute force easily. That was the point.

Amazon's architect's are some of the best in the world. They've basically reinvented data centers going beyond just hot and cold isles to custom racks with custom cooling solutions, etc. Here is a much more in-depth talk from James Hamilton on Amazon's S3/EC2 setup and their focus on adding up all the small improvements: Datacenter Infrastructure Innovation These are the same folks that basically invented the "cloud" so they could sell the CPU power for their servers that sit idle most of the year and only spool up for Christmas time.
