American students get tuition raise after tuition raise, and they do nothing. Same thing for American workers--we just bend over and take it. But Europeans know how to organize and act together. That is why they have taken their countries to a place beyond what America is or may ever be. They have free or low cost universities. American students have to go into debt $20K even for a public school education.
American workers now work more hours per year than any other country, and our pay just keeps going down.
Brainwashed and politically isolated by the media, we are each like baby wildebeest stranded midstream in an African river, while the investors, business owners and corporations feast on our carcasses.....
At this end of this article , Congressman and Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich calls for the U.S. House Judiciary Committee to investigate Diebold's DMCA takedown notices and their abuse of the DMCA. He also wants to stop other corporate abuse of the DMCA.
US Rep and presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich is the co-sponsor of this bill, shown on his website.
If you slashdotters want someone who will back you and fight for you on Internet and software issues, Dennis Kucinich is the man. Diebold would probably still be going on with the lawsuits if Dennis had not defied Diebold by publishing links to the memos on his website.
I cannot believe no one has mentioned that Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich almost certainly caused this to happen by linking to the diebold memos on his US Congressional website, and by calling for a congressional investigation of Diebold's legal actions.
Kucinich appears to be one of the few politicians who will stand up for the citizen againt the corporations. He is certainly the only presidential candidate to do so....
The same motivations that drove van Gogh play a part in driving some open source software developers......
Therefore, art approximates open source software
A passion for "what is right", a passion for logic and truth, an inward focus, fascination with knowledge and patterns, a passion for the quest, for the mission, a need for Truth and Justice, etc etc etc. This all describes marginal Asperperger's Syndrome, and it describes both myself and many of the open source community and the slashdot community....know thyself....
If Americans cannot find the offshore pharmacies, they will have to pay the inflated prices of American pharmacies. So the Big Pharmaceutical Companies may have paid google to do this. Mo' money Mo' money Mo' money for Big Pharmco...and less for Americans....
Google better watch its ass...we geeks MADE google what it is by being the early adopters who spread the word to the general population.....we can also make google's sucessor.
Is there any decent search engine that does not use google as an input?
THis article highlights another example of the GPL causing corporate wariness of Linux: In this article by Mike Downing of Integrated Communications Design, Wind River's Vice President of Corporate Marketing, Curt Schacker, expresses his company's concerns about the viability of using GPL-based software (like Linux) in embedded applications. "More customers are telling us that they see interesting aspects to Linux . . . but we're seeing a growing problem due to the growing uncertainty of using GPL-based code in embedded development," says Wind Rivers's Schaker according to Downing.
What are the options for revising the GPL, if any?
...that the internet is untouchable on taxation--that was the feelgood assumption on the part of American. THis assumption was created by politicians and the media and was fueled by dotcom dollars. It was part of the dotcom propaganda machine. So taxing the internet now is going to be hard for the politicians to do.
But now that is over, in part because the cheapness of comuters leads to widespread use of them, and now so many people can do many things with them....
As a former English teacher, what is needed most is development of reading skills. And many websites require a lot of reading, or at least more than TV watching, and sometimes more than using a textbook.
When I taught, the computers were kept in a separate classroom and only accessed once a week. It certainly held their attention, and the appropriate webpage can test their reading skills.
The "American hating liberal" propaganda meme was developed years ago to stifle criticism. I think American Power IS CORRUPT. Remember that pwoer corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Truer words were never spoken. And look at how entrenched and longlived the American power structures are! Unlike western european democracies, which were torn down and rebuilt from the ground up in a supervised manner after WW2, the American power structures have grown old and corrupt, made the most powerful and the most corrupt in the world by virtue of happenstance geography. No wonder the average American worker works 30% more hours per year than the western europeans, and has to pay for exorbitant health care and university costs......
Inevitably, it just comes down to established power/money using the govt to keep its power and wealth. The p2p computer networks are just something that CorpGovMedia has not yet brought under its control.
Ummm....yeah...did you get that memo?

I myself am a cryonicist, and so, therefore, I sure do hope Drexler is right. But you have a good argument!

correction--citizens get to VOTE on govt, but not on the incestuous combination of corporation, govt and media.

Sort of forgot that aspect of it, did ya?
If we can get an man into the presidency who has a record of defying bankers and other ESTABLISHED POWERS, then at least we have a chance....
When Dean was elected gov of Vermont, he went to great pains to bend over backwards to appease the bankers, the moneymen, and the PowersThatBe.
Kucinich, OTOH, went to great pains to circumvent, to contradict, to subvert, and to defy, the PowersThatBe.
You choose.....

The computers and the software were simply, it seems. And that simplicity made for more fun.
