    This makes no sense to me and even though you're using the same syntax as mathematics, you've got some different assumptions. This is a different algebra. Statements in different algebras aren't comprable.

    I had fun handwriting a little machine code (lower level than assembly) -- actually just writing the bytes of the program -- in Bochs.

    I think in 2 bytes I could do a terminal echo; in 13 bytes I could boot to real mode; and in 33 bytes I could boot to 32-bit protected mode. Coulda kept going.

    Why can't we build completely special purpose machines? Like DOS, with no protection whatesoever -- if I get it wrong, please just let the whole computer die. You could just have a fixed byte range i/o monster for your database server.

    XP and Win2003 were both built from "Whistler." Yes, there are differences in the two kernels, but XP and 2003 are closer to each other than XP and 2000. Big changes in the kernel from 2000->xp.
