  1. water please! on The Soda Situation - Succulent Drinks w/o the Sweets? · · Score: 1

Funny how timing is with this post. I am currently trying to drop 50lbs that have found a home on me thanks to a sedentary work and play life. You would never know that one of my hobbies is nutrition.

But... I read through most of the replies and realized that we really are a sad group. Thanks to marketing and science we have become addicts of sugar. Sugar is actually considered more addictive than cocaine or meth, but it's still legal, and I want more than my share. The replacements for sugar will work for a while, but there are issues with putting synthetic materials into your body. There will be some side effects of some kind. Just the way the body works, it can't process synthetics properly.

So my solution is to limit my intake to no more than one per day, and drink a lot of water. The guideline for proper hydration is take your 10% of your weight transfered into ounces. Ex. 269lbs * 10% = 26.9 oz of water.

Seem like a lot? That soda is leaching far more than that out of your body, and you will drink a 32oz (or more!) soft drink when eatting that burger and fries for lunch. I keep a 52oz thermal mug full of ice water on my desk all day long, and without thinking about how much I have drunk, I have to refill it 2x each day. Then I go home and have a 32oz cold cup sitting by me that I am sipping on all night while I chat with friends, watch TV with the wife, or play online. I don't think about the amount of water I drink. I don't force myself to drink it. I just sip when thirsty and drain it without issue pretty easily.

It should be noted that I will try to only drink spring or artesian water, or water run through the Pur filter at home to reduce the exposure to all the other nice little things that are in water. I also carry a "Wellness Wand" from Wellness Enterprises to filter any water at restaraunts. Eventually I would like to have their water filter in the house, but I will start with this.

I am slowly losing the weight, since I still don't exercise, but I am not sick as much as I was.

So my response to the question? Go with the water.

  2. maybe it's not the cell phones? on NYC Subway Cell Service, No Cell-Related Cancer · · Score: 2, Interesting

Maybe the problem isn't that the phone cause the tumors, but rather your hand preference. Think about it. Most people will, a majority of the time, use their dominant hand to hold the cell phone when talking on it. So of course the tumor that supposedly is caused by the phone is also going to match up to their dominant had as well. So maybe this is about your dominant hand being the deciding factor in the location NOT the phone!

What percent of persons using a cell phone have developed a tumor in the first place? I think that with the massive use of cell phones in our culture, and the lower numbers of tumors in the same population, we are going to find that there is probably not a real strong correlation.

Having not been raissed on a dairy farm, but living in Nebraska where we raise corn AND cattle, I can say that this is NOT a myth. I actually live in the largest city in NE, but it's a stones throw to dairy farms and feed lots from here. My house is less than a mile from a dairy farm that was owned by a friends friend when I was younger.

needless to say, we did torture them there bovines, and they will tip over when proper mass and force are applied. You have to do it quick because when they figure out they are going to be "tipped" they move. We had the advantage that the cattle knew us so weren't all that skittish, but still.

I do have to say that the "mooo-thump" sound can be rather humourous, especially when it's accompanied by large amounts of alcohol. ;)

  4. So sad on TrekUnited Campaign Ends · · Score: 2

Although I did not get to see any of the series, it is rather sad to hear that it is being canceled. I have heard a great deal of praise for the series, and something about taking showers with Vulcans.

What does surprise me is that Paramount has refused to accept the demand from the fans, including 3.1 MILLION dollars raised to fund it. It makes you wonder what they are up to, and why they are allowed to monopolize the Star Trek world in such a way.

Makes you wonder what Roddenberry would say at this point.

WRT being a manager. I own 2 companies, and also work a FTJ for a major corporation. Becoming a owner has made changes, but I have not lost my "geekness", only refined it.

As an employee, I find that I try harder to get things done and work to get others to do the same. As a manager, I find that I am having to balance the carrot and the stick, so that I can get the job done, but without killing my people.

Take a look at books like "One Minute Manager" or anything by John Maxwell and/or Zig Ziglar. For a real expensive but rather really informative way, join a successful MLM. The really good ones have excellent self improvement and management training systems. Just don't spend all your money on their products. ;)

  7. I agree with SOME of this on Getting the Girl · · Score: 1

I run a company that does LAN parties and online gaing events. Although we are not to the scale of other events, we do get a fair share of people in the doors.

Attracting the female gamer is something like hunting the mythical beasts or yore sometimes. But the number of female gamers that attend is always low. The only time we see a larger number is when we attend a party sponsored by the local university. Then we see the ladies that are gamers with their boyfriends only. For the most part this 43% is not showing up in person, but only online.

Although I agree that the "beautiful people" stereotype swings both ways, I question the need for the female characters to wear next to nothing, where as the male characters are fully clothed and heavily armed.

Hmm, I think we still have a long way to go.

I remember that! I was too old for them, but I had a Little Professor that eventually wore out and had to be chucked. He taught me all the math skills that I didn't want to know. To bad it didn't stick, or maybe it did, but writing on the board just wasn't as much fun as the old LEDs.

  9. Day at the office on Introducing Children to Computers? · · Score: 1

My father was in the US Air Force and spent a lot of time working on forecasts and predictions using some rather large (for the time period) computers. I grew up looking at green-bar and punch cards, and then hearing the clickety clack of a teletype when I visited his office.

Later we were assigned overseas, and I spent even more time in the office since he was a single parent, and baby sitting wasn't afordable on his salary. All that time led to learning that computers are easy to use, and how to work with the systems to get what you want from the system. My junior high school had 2 Apple IIe computers that I learned to disassemble and reassemble, as well as code in BASIC.

Even later, the mother of a friend of mine had a job with the Corp of Engineers, and we spent a great deal of time playing a MUD on the DEC. This lead me to use my talents to start writing basic MUDs for myself.

I eventually saved up as much money as I could and purchased my first computer (Atari 800XL) and continue writing apps for my entertainment and utilities for my use. I took courses in PASCAL and BASIC in high school on a early Macintosh and quickly learned that my skills were not in graphics!

Since then I have always been involved with computers. I am now a consultant in Windows networking, as well as network design and support.

I am also active in a gaming clan and help others teach kids, toddlers and up, to be comfortable with computers.

The one thing that I have to say about kids these days is that they are so exposed to the world f computers that they are picking it up faster than we were at their age. Many are leaving high school with knowledge of systems that we had to learn about late in our careers. I had to tutor a kid in a Cisco Networking class in his Junior year of high school!

The march of technology is getting faster, and the next generation is catching on to that pace even faster than the one before.

  10. Hear Hear on Editorial: On the SpikeTV Video Game Awards · · Score: 2, Insightful

As the owner of one of those gamer sites, and a company that manages LAN party events, I agree completely.

I realize that there are those out there who are just wanting to have a good time. I can be one of them. But I also am a businessman who is working in a business that is growing and will eventually be considered "respectable". But the likes of the Spike awards show will not hasten that respectability.

Additionally, since we run LAN parties we see a LOT of those gamers that this show is supposed to represent. they are not rappers, they are ordinary people who really look up to the programmers and other visionaries who create the entertainment they are partaking in. Why cheapen that with people who have nothing to do with the industry, and women who wouldn't dare come into a major event dressed like that without a security force of some size around them.

I think it's about time that the people who write teh games, and the people who play the games should have a say in what is award worthy, and what is not. Let the industry itself decide what's worth the awards. Use the industry movers and shakers as the people who are presenting. Use the groups that had music IN the games as the musical interludes. Heck, do like the Oscars, and have the songs that are up for awards be the ones that are played.

Don't insult the average gamer with drivel that they can't relate to.

That's just the rantings of an experienced gamer, but still...

I feel that they both get the job done in different ways, and sometimes one is better than the other. We (the team who manage the servers at my place of employment) have been slowly introducing more and more Linux boxes, just because we can do more with the functions we are introducing them for. [Well, that and the fact that the security team is very Windows centric and can't crack these, much to their frustration and chagrin. ;)]

However, Ballmers contentions that Windows is just better are beginning to sound more like the ravings of a man demanding that the wind stop blowing.

As for the facts on the website? My college stats teacher proved that you could make the numbers say anything if you try hard enough.

Programmers will code the security so that the app only works one way, and some user will break it s it works elsewhere as well.

We need to have more thought put into coding so that apps will work more platforms, and also be aware that it is envitable (sp?) that somebody will crack it.

  14. My take on this on When Should a Consultant Question Decisions? · · Score: 1

As a consultant, I have faced this many times. A customer pays me to come in and help them solve an issue. During the course of the work, I present them with the solution(s) and work with them to implement them. If, however, they choose to not go with my suggestions, but have me do the work, I will consider the best course of action.

Is it worth it for me to gracefully turn down the offer to implement someone else's concept? Perhaps the other approach will work.

If the solution(s) they choose to use are absolutely not going to help them, I will present my opinion and evidence in an organized, calm manner. If they still choose the path of destruction, then I will calmly, politely leave. I cannot afford to have my reputation associated with the poor decision. My presence there with most likely result in being associated with the poor decision.

I have still stayed in certain circumstances just to help them pick up the pieces, because the higher ups understood my statements, and asked me too. Then it becomes my job to try and keep them from destroying things beyond recovery, and be the voice of reason, as well.

    My 2 cents.
