If I am to pay by pageview, I'd like to know how many I have consumed recently. I'm sure I'm one of the frequent 3% (fuck, I read trolltalk and journals regularly!) but I would like to understand what this really means. Would I pay $5 for .. a month? two weeks? more? less?

Whether or not you are collecting a sufficient amount of soft money from the lobbyists for this particular law

Ethernet cards are made by 100s if not 1000s of vendors. Okay, they're usually built into the PC now - but you can always buy a third party one. Do you really think people will rush to buy the crippled card, when real ones cost less ($10)? I don't think so.

The reason Hollywood is so caught up in this is that they know that any technical solution they devise will fail without the law backing it up. But the industry won't stand for such a law, as we see with this letter.

Maybe he got dumped by his wife. Maybe she cheated on him and then got a nice settlement. Maybe it's a she, and these conditions are reversed. Or maybe they never got married. You can't know what the truth is simply from the fact that the poster pays child support - but yet you rush to judgment about his (her) lifestyle choices.

Lots of people shirk their child-support responsibilities (and not just the "deadbeat dads" the media like to talk about). Here's someone who is trying to be responsible!

Consumers pay either way. The difference is that most consumers don't pay high recycling fees to keep toxic waste out of the landfill - they just chuck it in the garbage. So the idea here (100% non-enforceable, I think) is to prevent the latter from occurring.

Not so - CDNow, Amazon, et al. have reasonable return policies and active message boards. Take a look at the "More Fast and Furious" page on Amazon .. tons of complaints. It is very likely that these vendors will warn their customers, because returns and chargebacks are very expensive!

As for me as a buyer: I use my iPod for all my music, so I have no plans to buy any CD I can't rip into real MP3. Warnings will help me make reasonable decisions here. Vendors who wish to sell crippled CDs will need to find other customers.
