Comment deletion would be a great trolling tool. Simple example:
1. Karma whore an account up to 50.
2. Post some really annoying and abusive stuff at +2: obfuscated goatse.cx links, rotten.com pix, *BSD is dying trolls, even (shudder) Adequacy citations, you name it.
3. Get flamed and then modded down.
4. Delete your post.
5. Post a perfectly informative comment at root level (or in reply to a flame).
6. With other accounts, harass the responders mercilessly for flaming nothing (or a perfectly informative post that just needed to be replaced due to a simple typo or two.)
(Hmm, maybe I agree, I'm an occasional troll myself. Bring it on!)
At least in the states - my employer (AT&T) offers multi-homed and backup connections at T1 speed and above. (Routing is via BGP4.) You need to accept IPs from one ISP or another, so they're not really "yours," but it still works. I presume Aussie ISPs do the same thing, but I may be wrong.
Well, as a cube farm dweller myself, I think this would kick butt. Saves a lot of trouble with adding hubs &c. when additional PCs become necessary - e.g. when you bring in your home laptop, or when a visitor comes to use your PC. Plus it would require much less in the way of connection between cube and LAN. So I can clearly see the value.
Apparently it's common practice to use stolen cards at gas stations, to see if the card is still valid. Of course the fraud protection guys watch for this too - 5 x $2.00 gas purchases, interleaved with expensive computer parts, within a few days would almost certainly get the card cancelled. From what I've read about the subject.
imagine a "+1 Funny" rank for the Onion or a "-1, Offtopic" page rank for every time you go surfing for something honest and end up at Yet Another pr0n Site.:)

cracking 3DES is perfectly legal, and if someone did find a way to crack it, its millions of users would definitely like to know! Al Qaeda or no Al Qaeda.
It's not the law per se, IIRC it's the DVD Forum's license that requires region coding. Of course you can buy a region-free player (modified by hand?), but it costs more, so you pay one way or another.
I still don't understand why region coding isn't ruled illegal as a per se violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act. Oh yeah, Hollywood owns both parties, lock stock and barrel - I forgot.
Isn't that dead as a doornail? Deader than OS/2? Deader than even *BSD?
Seriously, I don't know of any MP3 player that won't play all your ex-Napster or Gnutella/Audiogalaxy/etc. mp3s. My iPod, which I think is fabulous, plays everything I put on it, so long as it's mp3 (sorry no ogg or wma). And I for one am damn sure that I won't run any "up"grade that takes away that ability - and the vendors (except Microsoft) know that too, which is why you don't have anything to worry about.
But back up your tunes to CD-R anyway, in case of system crashes and other stuff - not just SDMI shenanigans.

Except slashdot editors mod all the time.

Is my assessment that SDMI is dead as a doornail correct, or not?
I think it's required in NZ

But that would be censorship! And that would be wrong!
Reminds me of that old song from Hair ... sodomy, fellatio, etc.
Maybe so. But who in his/her right mind would run the "up"grade to SDMIze their Rio? I just don't see it.
The iPod file access utility sounds very useful - I just dl'd it. Everyone with iPod needs to read this.

As someone else has noted, if you were a real audiophile, you would hire your own damn orchestra.
Maybe management walks all over them because they insist on trying to fuck up people's personal property? Just a thought.
