Even for Apple we know that the argument for saving space is nonsense. USB-C is 8.4mm x 2.6mm.

My understanding is that is not the dimensions of the jack on the surface of the phone that is the problem, but the internal depth into the phone.

If they public's opinion doesn't sway I'd expect to see the headphone jack back on the iPhone by the time the iPhone 9 comes out.

It just struck me that this is not just about headphones, but also things like the Square reader that plugs into the headphone jack*. I'm sure Square would be thrilled to have re-design their hardware to incorporate it wirelessly (and what does that do to security of said devices?)

    * Although if Apple shifts to USB-C and softens its stance on the what can be physically connected to their products then it might be a win-win situation.

One guy reported that the Flashlight app on his phone had permission to use the microphone as well as access his his contacts. I can't imagine how the coders for that App "accidentally" requested those permissions.

  12. Replying to myself.

I just read another article that says

Imagine a few years from now traveling from New York to Paris with your spiffy iPhone 9. You get off the plane, go into the iPhone’s settings, and in a few steps, you sign up with a plan from any one of a number of carriers for a bundle of voice minutes and data.

    http://www.barrons.com/article...

So probably I don;t know jack about the pro's and con's of eSIMs.

  13. A remotely reprogrammable SIM card, so you don't have to switch SIMs when you change networks and it can be soldered on the PCB instead needing a slot.

But unless this lets you switch back and forth at will, it doesn't seem that great if you travel a lot. Also, I imagine it will act like a permanent identifier for tablets/PCs and they'll try to tie software and music purchases to it so you're fucked when it dies.

From what I saw chasing down what an eSIM is, it looks like the use case is to allow you to swap providers at the end of a contract. Which will mean (among other things) that you will be forced into roaming with a network when you travel rather than have the opportunity to swap out your SIM for a local one.

What they forget is no one cares what phone Trump uses to tweet from. As long as he has a second phone to keep the classified stuff secure, who cares if he also keeps his personal phone? Not even the Democrats really care: this is just yet another tactic to try and smear a very popular president.

Wouldn't you want to know if his personal phone was compromised and he was carrying it around all over the place?

At the very least it acts as a big red target painted on his back where ever he goes. At the other end of the spectrum the microphone and camera record and pass on everything it sees and hears.

This is security 101 and not political. That is Trump we are talking about makes it very easy to slip into an argument of "He's a doofus. No, you're just butthurt".
