Ok first clarification that most people don't understand, they are using the romanized names for the letters from Greek, alpha, beta, delta, epsilon, and so on. NOT words written in Greek.
Second. This year is one of the large amount of tropical storms and hurricanes, but in additions it's broken records (at least averages) in most areas with number of "major" hurricanes (3+ I believe) hurricanes, and tropical storms(what actually get the names)
Third, the problem with the global warming arguement is the arguement usually starts with "global warming creates unpredictable behavior in nature" unfortunatly Hurricanes have always been unpredictable and always can be violent, in addition they come in cycles, there are times of big bad hurricanes before that devistated the America area. and then it waxes and wanes as it wish.
However Global warming theorists have claimed this proves their points because an unpredictable system is "even more" unpredictable? Some how I think a BS meter would blow up at that one.
Fourth and most interesting, if this hurricane hooks and shoots right into New Orleans it's entirely possible that the 2 foot or more surges will flood New Orleans again.. And if that wasn't bad enough, it could hit the levee and screw them up again. Long story short? more flooding is likely, if not very likely.
But then again I'm in Florida so it's hard for me to feel pity when we get wrecked yearly and people act like we're idiots for staying here.
I'm glad that they are working on this stuff, I've heard barely nothign about it, and I think psychologically they need people thinking about it, but if they release all of a sudden with good numbers we'll see. I really am hoping for a good system, and am unsure of what we'll see with that controller thing, but it does have potential.
They definatly are differnt then sony or MS which are currently screaming at the top of their lungs to outshout each other about the power of their systems. Neither though have impressed me because it's about what's new, besides the power. Though Cell processing will definatly be a big improvement.
And I'm a big Nintendo Fan, Zelda has been a favorite forever for me, but even I have to admit defeat on the Cube, though I see a bright ending, with Zelda coming out next year and not that much competition on this version of the systems. Though I'm pissed about 4 extra monthes wait, but it should hurt Sony's launch a touch , and might boost revolution's (think, instead of buying a Gamecube, just buy a revolution and be able to play the new Gamecube game... Legend of Zelda "kick ass super monkey paw" as well as other fine games.)
As most of us know, IE is core to Windows, where Firefox is a browser. This is not disputable as when you browse your harddrive, you're actually using Explorer, type a IE address in to it you're already using the internet version of Explorer. This bypasses all security set up on the IExplorer.exe file. It's a bad situation.
Firefox has one major entry point.
So here's the problem, when Firefox gets hacked, you lose firefox, and reinstall it at the worst. When IE gets hacked it makes the ENTIRE OS unsecure. 1 security flaw in IE makes the entire OS vunerable. Firefox's vunerablities should be local to Firefox. If the OS was completely secure it couldn't go farther then it.
That's the problem Windows keeps adding more functionality but that just adds more holes. Firefox is a localized project, not a piece of the actual OS and thus for any person it should be considered less critical when IE has a vunerablity.
Patent doesn't mean lawsuits. Microsoft uses patents as a axe, that doesn't mean that all companies will use patents that way. I've never heard them going after the GBA emulators by a patent, just that it was theft of their stuff, and breaking the DMCA, both.
Their old contracts are old for a reason, and let's admit that maybe it was smarter that way, I prefer 1 good game, rather then an ok game and 2 ports (3 if you count the computer)
If you want to continue to be anti-Nintendo feel free, but realize that your just back pedalling here. Gamecube's falling is the same as the PSP's current predicament.
I never said the system is dead, I said it's the game cube of handhelds. Notice next year Nintendo has probably the best game of the year coming out (Zelda) You might see a huge amount of Gamecubes sold just on that. But gamecube is hurting for the games.
This is like anything else entirely dependant on what you like to play. Metal Gear: Acid rocks if you like tactics games. Or if you're a fan of Metal Gear stories.
How many people rave about that game? I love card games, I'm one of the few ones, (check out culdcept though, it's a perfect card game, for the ps2)
THUG2 is an excellent port. Having an entire Tony Hawk game on a handheld just rocks.
Funny how you think Entire Tony Hawk and I see "played it before, no interest" you want to make the system about something more then ports, let's start here.
Mercury is old-school fun; lots of levels and challenges, and they're not easy. And it's pretty to look at, too. Untold Legends is satisfactory if you want hack'n'slash Baldur's Gate style.
I liked Baldur's gate Style, but that's the PC baulder's gate, which is RPg.
You're talking about a Hack and slash, Diablo PC, Baulder's gate PS2, Fall out PS2, and so on. Again not that unique (and champions of norrath come to mind too)
Hot Shots Golf rocks; don't bash it, people have bought PSPs for it, and I've spent far too much time in the past two days learning why. It's fun, and excellently implemented, with huge long-term value.
Again a Ps2 Xbox game that came over, after a sequal, and neither game was met with acclaim.
Ridge Racer is a great arcade-style drift racer, but don't expect GT-style simulation driving (wait for GT).
GT We'll see, but there too many boring racing games out there, I play three race games,
Burnout best Crashes. GT, best racing (don't argue, just nod. You know it's true) Tokyo Xtreme Racing, second best racing game (debatable, but I just love it for the high octane and I do love the tuning)
That's over the last 5 years, before that was Mario Kart, which now bores me but if you have a group around it's fun.
But over those 5 years there's been 20 "good" racing games None of tem interest me. Even Tokyo Xtreme on PSP I've seen and it's not impressive. I like the high Octane, I don't need a scaled down version I play it on the PS2 if I need it. If I'm on the road, I'm playing a REAL racing game, why use a PSP for that?
A launch games are 3 monthes, and that's generous. I personally say 1 month but let's say three.
PSP didn't have a good launch selection unless you LOVED the PS2 and needed a portable system. But to be honest both systems' had a poor launch (Though there was some gems neither showed a great one at launch though Mario 64 and Lumines is good.)
1 year is when the first major game MUST hit, otherwise the system gets shaky, And even then you need to have solid hits for a while a must buy game every 2 monthes would make it perfect. But going almost 12 monthes I have yet to see a game that defines the system. Metal Gear Acid interests me, but I don't see others accepting it. Dynasty warrios are great on the PS2 but I don't need a hand held version of it. Most people I've spoken with that wanted the system badly was glad to get a system to play games similar to PS2 games. Not because they had unique games.
DS is starting to come out with their strongest hits now, but they really screwed up. I said Nintendo was Entrenched, but the funny thing about being entrenched, you can flood your enemies easily then. The PSP should be on top today, but they didn't have the launch titles to blow up that dam it.
The PSP had the potential and it still does, but it needs those games TODAY. GTA might start it but they need sold hits. The one thing they need is games to combat all categories, they will never beat a few areas (Don't expect a Advanced Wars, or a Nintendogs but a good RPG and a good action game should be out soon)
We'll see, I'm not rushing them, but I think it should have already been decided and perhaps it's already done.
I just have to say you have no tact, no skill in arguement, and just feel like attacking who ever disagrees with you.
You don't seem to realize that there's generations of these things. You don't jump into Airbags, you have the first car for the airbag, you have the first sports car of a generation and they get completely redesigned. Last I checked a Cavalier in 1990 looks quite different then my Cavalier in 2003. And most of the 80s model look different than those, then they sell this model for around 10 years, then they make a new generation, they have pieces from the old one, but for the most part they take all the best pieces. You don't go from Model T to Corvette in little jumps, you create a good looking corvette, sell that for a while, making those small imporvements and create a WHOLE new car, which is when they show the car.
Show me how there's no generation of cars, how there never was a time when it was the 90s Japanese dominance of cars. the 80s Muscle cars from American companies, the 2000s super sleak cars. There's generation even if you can't see anything from 10 years agos. You don't realize they have to completely redesign most of these cars when they add something as major as a new engine.
Want an example even you can follow? The Hummer is a great example. They sold the Hummer for about 2 years, then they completely redesigned it for the H2 about 2 years ago. Now they have the H3, each of them are completely different cars. there's nothing small about those improvement. That's Atari, to coleco, to Nes, now we're currently riding out something like Mustang, a car that's been her for 5 years, it's beautiful and fun but it's the same thing in theory for the last 5 years (yes they have a weaker model) they will likely soon release a total new model.
As for your personal attacks they just prove the depth of your character. And that's all I have to say about that, notice how I don't call you stupid or anything of the sort but point out it's a short coming, maybe learn from it and come back in a couple years, when you have evolved from petty name calling.
Did the Model T have a Hemi, Did the Model T have airbags, did the model T do 0-60 ever? Did the model T look sleak like a Corvette, or have the space of a Minivan? Did the Model T have fuel economy? Why arn't we still using the Model T?
We arn't talking about humans here. Human generations are technically 20 years, Console videogames have been out only 30 years total. Videogames in any forms are only around 60 years old. There's major generations there (from arcade, to computer, to home, and so on)
Let's assume that humans and consoles are the same though. Can you think radically faster then your parents? No, only if they are old (very old). Are you radically smarter or do different things then any of them before? Not really again. Yet consoles do that and they are called Next Generations but they arn't really. they are just growing older. They arn't children of the previous system.
Look at the PSX to PS2, you have the PS2 still playing PSX games and PS3 should support PS2 and PSX, that's just aging the system, not redeveloping it. I can still do the stuff I used to do when I was 5, I'm smarter, and more intellegent than I used to be. I can do things more efficently and faster, and i can do new things. Yet I'm the same person. Not a new generation.
When I have a child it will look different, maybe not radically, but facial features will change, so will desires, abilities, and techniques, and that will be a new generation, not the same thing each time.
Let's face it people the PSP has a serious problem with games, this is the same problem you laughed at the Game Cube about, but you defend it now? The problem is you don't have people who know how to make handhelds in charge of it.
Nintendo risked a bit with the 2 screens, but notice where they are? Notice they know how to use it. Nintendogs is genius. They tried something big, and it's worked. Sony can't have something like that, they don't have the capablities for it on this system.
It's the same with the Revolution, if Nintendo gets third party in and sees it's a great idea you'll see a shift in power. And they can likely do it. What they need to let out is numbers for the systems and get the dev kits out, I don't know if they have done either, but once that starts it could be something good. It's going to be hard, but let's be honest, if you think games are good now, your kidding yourself, all we are getting are games similar to what we've been seeing for the last 20 years. This might actually give us something different.
The problem is PSP should stand for PS Ports. They might have GTA Liberty City Stories but they need more than one unique game to hold this system together and they failed that test so far. The only game I want for the PSP is Lumines and maybe Liberty City Stories. Where as the DS definatly has the games, and the backwards compatibility too.
They should have allowed everyone to put their own apps on the system. Would Java have worked if they locked it down? Imagine if you can run anything on the PSP and enjoy programming for it? but of course Sony doesn't want freedom (remember they have a huge invested interest in RIAA.)
Ngage failed for the similar reason in the game department, but the PSP is competition for the DS which is good, but it's not going to beat it though. Nintendo is entrenched here where they wern't on the 64. They use the older archaic format for the Handhelds, but I've noticed it's the one that works the best. You can't damage a cartridge like you can easily scratch a disk. I've scratched many discs accidently, nothing horrible but I've done it, I've never ever damaged a cart, even when trying... And when your transporting this stuff, you're going to scratch it after a while.
The more we glorify their attempts at trying to make it live, the worse it will do when it crashes. UMD is a good idea, if they can make other players and get the cost down. I'm not going to pay twice the price (I get DVDs at places like walmart.. 15 bucks a piece on the day it gets released) just so it's portable. That's obscene.
Great analysis. and perfect example of why this system can beat others, I didn't think this could be used to maximize FPSes (which have SUCKED on consoles for years. Sorry fanboys, Halo wasn't a great FPS, Half Life 2 was a great FPS)
But There's so much potential in this system, all we need to see is how it's used.
If the FPSes don't come or realize the potential it's all for naught, Nintendo must garner some support and fast, if they do so, they will take the market with a really new system, something I havent' seen from Sony since the PS, and the Xbox is just a Bigger PS with more computery interface, both based on PS, which is VERY similar to the Dreamcast, which was just a large version of the Saturn, which was just a Sega CD with a a better controler and a little bit better support.
The systems are all more powerful but the power itself DOESNT make a new generation. We have a million computers, none of them are a new generation, After Windows 3.1.1 We haven't had a new generation of computers. Of Procs and ram, and everything else there's new stuff, but generations require a complete redesign, not just bits and pieces.
The problem is the controller hasn't evolved except getting more buttons, I love the Ps2 controller, but why shouldn't I? It's evolved from the 10 controllers of the systems before it. It's freaking using the same control scheme the NES uses except that they add analog sticks and sholder buttons (SNES anyone?) and of course twice the buttons... big whoop.
So Definate Kudos to Nintendo, and let's hope the industry appreciates the new approach because it can save the industry or it will kill itself, but either way at least it's new.
How many of us use Firefox? it's "impregenable" except it's honestly not. The difference is if you crack Firefox you broke 10-20 percent of the populations. If it was impregnable, then the shell:// command wouldn't have been simple to use, the newest bug wouldn't be there. The fact is that's Obscurity. Sorry people, but just because you believe it's popular it's not going to be that highly targeted with only 10 percent of the market share. I'm already seeing a few pop ups on Firefox on a very few sites. That alone tells me that it's not perfect.
Most of you claim Linux over Windows. And there'll be a large amount of Linux virii when it goes mainstream, you think if microsoft goes away Virii will die? nope. They will just target a big dog. And by that I mean the big dog of the home user market. It's great to nail a Server but RTM is a name of a virus to Computer guys. To most people they don't know what that is. Why? because it doesn't effect them and didn't effect them. But every single user probably knows at least the names of 3 windows viruses (blaster, Zotob, should come to most people's minds. I'll leave it up to you for a "choice" third one, because there have been some doozys and I'm sure we all have a personal story. )
The fact is that if everyone at home used Linux it'd be it by more virii, the people who write these things want to be famous, around the world through their "children". Last time I heard about a Linux or Unix Virii getting national attention... hmm now that I think of it I haven't and there have been a decent amount.
Go ahead believeing you are for better standards, but the sad fact is that most of the people who claim they don't choose Obscurity, Doesn't realize that in the long run they have in one way or another. And they'll be bit when the curtain has been pulled back.
yes and no.. Remember a fix is as good as the system operator that patches it..
There's a reason viruses thrive, and destroy servers, lazy sysops. people knew about zotob, but didn't take the time to solve the problem and major networks lost a lot. Hell those things probably shouldn't have had Plug and play enabled..
The fact they go open source won't mean anything, and in fact would mean LESS because now Microsoft doesn't come around once a month with a handy dandy "new patches"
I'm not saying Open Source is good, but it won't save the day.
Mozilla isn't Microsoft or Cisco in two catagories. A. They arn't ultra large coporatitions that can fix stuff in an instant. B. They don't ignore problems, especially like this. They're likely working as fast as they can and they are willing to admit fuckups, but they want to have a fix for the fuck up first.
We don't need everyone running around thinking that EVERY company conducts business the same way that Cisco does... How all of them are part of a conspiracy. Firefox is getting known in the industry to be basically good at avoiding problems other browsers have and fixing major bugs.
By having a guy run around like this only 4 days (notice the dates in that link) it can only cause a higher likelyhood that someone will use that find maliciously and Firefox will get blamed for it when it's really the disclosure that's the problem.
The fact is those of us who find these bugs need to give the company time to react, we don't need to act like they don't care. 4 days is hardly enough unless he got back a letter that said screw you, which it doesn't sound like he did. Giving Full Disclosure the first time you hear about a problem, just creates a bigger problem because now more people will learn of the problem.
And there's a definate difference between waiting a couple monthes like the Cisco incident where the company was being forced into an uncomfortable positions and waiting less then a full week with apparently no provacation.
We have a few standards now. TCP/IP is the Protocol for going on the internet for everyone. But it's not the only one because at times it's restrictive to some programs.
Mp3s have become the standard because of increased compression, but it also loses some quality in some people's minds but for the most part almost everyone can use them.
The problem with these standards is they were lucky. How many formats have been moved out of the way for Mp3s? (wav, ogg, aac just to name a couple) How many Movie Formats have come out after AVI? (ASF, WMV, OGG, MKV, and others)
See the problem is this. How do we establish a standard? The fact is standards are adopted, not created. It's great that you want to standardize the interoperability of goverments or coporations, but if the standards arn't up to snuff the standards arn't worth the time it takes to think about it.
The problem is thus, we need standards but open source standards arn't always as efficent, or even work. Standards NEED to be made by how useful the program or the protocol is, not how cheap it is to get. It's great to try to use them when we can, but there's some areas where it's not ready for prime time.
And then there's the other problem open standards tell everyone who wants to know how it works, this is a double edged sword. It's great everyone can link up with it, but someone who wants to create trouble can read it and figure out a way to get into the system itself.
I'm sorta glad we don't have certain groups relying on open formats for this reason. The groups that protect our finances, and our country. But the fact is that I've yet to see a national industry go and use only Open Source options and continue to thrive, and there's obviously reasons for that.
Hint internet was publically available in 1985, and even earlier for schools. And he started in the senate when he started really getting into the Internet in 1985... Interesting.
Even more interesting there's a Vinton Cerf excerpt near the bottom about "who" created the internet.
Of course Gore wants the internet, no sane person will say it's a bad thing (I'm speaking to you RIAA and MPAA) but I can't honestly say he did much more then just vote for it.
Yeah you know designing a form of networking that will last for 30 years, that's nothing major.
The fact that we can do so much with TCP/IP is evidence that the creator actually had more sense then most people in this industry, trivilizing his stuff because you can name stuff built off of that is a joke.
You make jokes about the size of ARPANET but what you don't realize is that those 9 computers were linked to each other, before that you'd have to have a direct line to each computer to call it a link, instead you could do one link to a central system to route the packages with out any major software really running. The idea of the ARPAnet is that it was a defensive infrastructure that could be attacked, and had nodes destroyed with out losing the entire network.
And as for size, yeah it's 9 computers, what ever you want to believe.
Just because you don't beliieve he's worth anything doesn't make him worth less. The fact is the guy actually invented something everyone uses now, that's incredible, a single standarized system of Control, that everyone can agree to, on all platforms, and hasn't been completely revolutionized for the most part for 30 years. Let's see your next development last more then 10 with out needing to be completely scrapped and reworked.
Not a popular topic for macphiles but IE does exist on the mac, and I never have heard of a real price for it. (why should they, when Microsoft can claim it's dominance from "free ware") And Linux CAN use Wine at least that's what every guru who tries to get Windows users to change keeps shouting.
I don't know abbut Javascript itself but IE is multi platformed at the very least, something Safari has yet to be able to do. Firefox too, Officially though this is bs, but at least they chose something everyone can use, as opposed to what the article says.
Well then you know what? that's Apple's fault. They chose to use the Window Installer. Many companies build their own, use the old VB installer, or anything. Apple has a large Team, why don't they design their own installer.
There is other installers then windows installer. Most of them work decently. There's also better ways to do this. And writing your own installer isn't hard for a group like Apple.
The problem is actually QT 7, I installed the stand alone, and that's giving errors. here's the problem... why isn't the Itunes and QT installer together giving errors when QT 7 alone can tell the errors. That's a big mistake.
And why does ITunes 5 not link immediatly with Itunes 4 on a neighboring computer at work as well as removing his whole play list?
If apple wasn't to dominate markets, it's gotta play the field. It wants to win points, not just blame their failings on Microsoft, but succeed and prove them to build the Elite work. I admire Apple's work towards the highest quality stuff, but this just proves the reason they are great is because they don't allow anyone to get into their works to mess it up.
That's fine but let's be honest, Quality is all good, but variety is the spice of life. That's why I rather surf the internet on a computer, rather then a console.
It doesn't work, it doesn't appear to actually install Quick time, and by that it doesn't allow Itunes 5 to work (it requires QT7, which only comes in that package.)
This is about the level of Microsoft's competence. Anyone have a work around to get QT7 so I can try out the new design?
I do hope your kidding, however the game is labeled from the movie called "fantastic four" apparently there was two many Fs in the title in their opinion, or maybe using the number 4 makes it's more "1337"
Might have been in that article "sequals we wish there was" I thought I read about a possible sequal for that game though, sorry. (of course then again, what will Godfather be if not Mafia 2)
After you factor in the tools like Renderware as well as others, you realize game designers do far less.
The fact is the line that "The next gen world is considerably more complex - and prices for titles that deliver on pushing this complexity will definitely reflect that."
Yeah I really think the next Need for Speed game really has the same level of complexity that Xenogears (the original) and Gran Turismo have. the fact is that if you priced games by complexity it'd be easier to tell who did the most work.
The reason why the game world is going in the crapper is every other game that is released is a sequal of a lousy first game, or a rip off of another game, or worse a port of a game from a different version (console to console, Console to PC, Pc to console.). I liked Half Life 2, Morrowind, UT2004, and Doom 3, but I don't need Big Mother Truckers 2, BloodRayne 2, or Fantastic 4.
I love most of GTA, but Mafia was aweful, Driver is terrible, and True crime just sucked. Yet all those have sequals coming? And let's not fail to meantion all the RPGs that fell short, all the racing games that just arn't needed, and all action games that is just mindless violence.
And let's remember all those games started on the PC ported to the Xbox (or bought for the Xbox) and then brought back to the PC? Deus Ex was an excellent game, the sequal? restricted. Morrowind at least was done right, Halo had a lofty goal (3 different playable races) until it became part of the Microsoft family, and Splinter Cell? I remembered that game when it was just called thief.
There's too many crap games that try to be different but end up being the same old crap. Of course let's not also meantion those ultra short single player games that get all their points from Muliplayer? And half the problem is these reviewing sites that never rate stuff under 6.0 Let's be honest. Out of the last 12 monthes, there's been some good games but there's been a LOT of bombs. Why arn't I seeing Reviews that are at least honest about that.
The end problem is this. Instead of spending more money to get named actors or named properties, like movies do (which have also fallen) why don't they spend the money making the game better or tighter, no one wants to play a movie based game if it's just movie scene, gameplay, movie scene, harder gameplay, movie scene, if the gameplay is only "hard" because of crap controls.
name one other point where the PS2 would win? there's no reason, the only two reasons is brand. But Microsoft has had windows as a platform for many years.
The fact is it really is up to Games. Granted there's an influx of consumers on launch, but after the first flood, which while is a bit major doesn't amount to that much.
Here's the core problem, that you DONT see. Your popularity numbers really mean nothing to the company in the end. There's one factor that all companies care about (Yes even Non Profits) profit/debt. The Xbox lost money for every year it was out, except the last year. The surplus from the last year was actually only a small percentage of ANY other year. They lost a large amount, and a good amount (5 mill) also on Advertising. (don't know where that got factored in or if it did in the numbers I read)
The problem with the game industry is that a console being popular is ok, a console with popular games is great. Consider that for most consoles to just break even they have to sell at least a couple games (depending on source, price, and other factors from 3-10) which is why bundles are SO important to them.
However as the system ages the price goes down, however the price to make system fluctuates, it doesn't drop when the system drops. And that's the crux of the problem, you have to sell the games, and hence games is what makes a win.
Microsoft could EASILY have won this thing, if they had something like Mario and Zelda on their system, they could work it. But the problem is I look at their system and with the Exception of Team Ninja's fine work and Panzer Dragoon, I see mostly Sports and Racing games or games similar to other systems.
Then add in the factor that Japan didn't embrace them like they thought (and for that they were VERY stupid, Everyone else knew Japan isn't going to welcome Microsoft with open arms, they barely will accept most american game companies)
The thing to remember is that the Xbox could wow anyone, but until you have games that will look and use the system to it's potential, only people who believe in the company will jump on that system. (I knew a zelda game was coming I grabbed the Cube on launch, as well as Smash Brothers. I had to wait for GTA 3 for the PS2, but there was many other games worth the money for that system too. I might grab a DS now for nintendogs which looks abnormally good.)
Ok first clarification that most people don't understand, they are using the romanized names for the letters from Greek, alpha, beta, delta, epsilon, and so on. NOT words written in Greek.

Pilotwings will be cool on the new controller.

You know it's true)
Tokyo Xtreme Racing, second best racing game (debatable, but I just love it for the high octane and I do love the tuning)
We'll see.
I'm glad to see immaturity and the desire not to explain oneselfs lives on.
You don't subscribe to it? Bullshit.
I mean I looked at the official disclosure from him (http://www.security-protocols.com/advisory/sp-x17 -advisory.txt)
and basically he acts like 4 days is all he needs to wait.. and apparently Mozilla isn't doing enough for this?
But the fact is that I've yet to see a national industry go and use only Open Source options and continue to thrive, and there's obviously reasons for that.
http://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue5_10/wiggin s/ has a good amount of information including exactly what Gore did or didn't do for the internet.
Let's see your next development last more then 10 with out needing to be completely scrapped and reworked.
now that's quite BS.
