Think about it this way. You have a business selling computer parts. Someone goes to your site, and then all of the sudden they get a popup ad going straight to a competitor of yours. This can hamper your ability to make a sale with your customer and impacts you financially. It's a Bad Thing(TM).
if Gator and gator style ads are starting to affect your business that badly, I think it'd be time to invest some money in a Gator ad.
Doesn't lock-out on hardware make it anti-competative to the software companies wishing to develop for whatever bits of hardware's available? I mean, if i have to go through SCEA/SCEE/SCEJ to develop software for the PS2, and they also develop software, doesn't that make it ab it of a monopoly?
I think what Marc referred to was innovation on the browser's end, not the overall experience. I'll admit, with Netscape/Moz getting tabbed browsing years after Opera did it, and IE still not supporting it, among other "innovations." I really can't think of anything to improve my webbrowsing experience though...
There are a variety of factors really. First off, I didn't weasel an OS from a Seattle computer shop to sell to IBM, and I didn't weasel out of that deal and sell to any buyer who wanted to copy IBM's success in the PC field.
I think he's a funny guy as far as his spoken word performances go, I've never actually heard him play his music. Personally, anyone who can say the following phrase or something to it's effect with a straight face deserves my praise.
"Maybe the greatest point in rock and roll was when Fred Schneider, the lead singer from the B52's, sang 'Boys in bikinis! GIRLS ON SURFBOARDS!'"
however long they've hyped the Hulk. And the hype for Book5 was fan generated, not industry generated. The way Goblet of Fire ended, it's no surprise Harry fans bought up Order of the Phoenix. I'm sorry, with voldemort coming back from a near-death like state, cedric diggory dying and harry beginning to go nuts, you'd have your fucking underwear in knots too...
And it's been damn near 3 years since Goblet too. So this basically adds up to a giant cash cow as long as Rowling doesn't screw the proverbial pooch and writes a terrible book.
The case against the chinese knockoff sixth book IS strong though, the book's being credited TO her as her own words translated into chinese(I'm assuming. I hope the chinese readers know that J.K. is british and probably speaks little to no chinese IIRC, I'm might be wrong, BUT i'm fairly sure she couldn't speak to a man named wong either).
However, against poor Ms. Grotter, the case against it's release is weak at the least...
yes, but they made a small problem with it. the old style GBA is unplayable by *most*(meaning, those with bad eyesight apparantly, I can see the screen just fine) with out some sort of Mod.
the problem there is that I READ the article but somehow I didn't comprehend. BUT since i'm on this tangent ANYWAY.
The problem here is not total control over the work in question, BUT, who profits from it. Sure. Cut it, hack it, dub over it, whatever. Just don't make copies and sell it. Sure, I bought a copy of Romancing Saga 2, an RPG that's entirely in Japanese, but that doesnt' give me the right to dump the ROM, translate it, reburn it, then sell the translated copy. How anyone could defend clean flicks is beyond me.
although I completley understand with the technology that the article refers to. Forgive me, I'll be kicking myself in the ass now.
no, it shouldn't. First sale rights end when you profit. personally, I'd be upset over this if my movie was being edited with out my, or my studio's permission. Cuts to the overall story can change the meaning of a movie IMMENSLY. Cutting of what one would call "Questionable Material" might also cut something I call "plot points and twists." They could change the meaning of movies, TV shows, and other media to meet thier own means.

How about a WebTV simulation X implementation? =)
wait.

only on /. could some one with moderator points mark the THIRD POST redundant...
Just thought I'd share that bit of musing.
www.google.com. You don't need your hand held through everything do you?

I'm a /.'er, i can't get up before noon!
email and emacs come pre-installed on most Linux distros..

but linux never really intended to go head to head against the Windows empire.
Did I just pull a /.? =)

I really should stop responding to trolls like this, but have YOU read any of the books?

Sounds like a good way to end up in jail.
What slant?
yes, but they made a small problem with it. the old style GBA is unplayable by *most*(meaning, those with bad eyesight apparantly, I can see the screen just fine) with out some sort of Mod.
Oops.
HELLO!? You should clarify that statement, MOST MMORPGs are easy on most CPU systems. half a gig of ram for Everquest? Fuck that.
That KaZaaLiteUser guy. He's a fucking jerk.
it was a JOKE...
Optical Audio scares me.
Only a former(former? current?) San Franciscan based LSD head could invent a computer where you could see the music.
reality distortion field?
Always though it was lysergic acid diethylamide

No, it's not.
only Microsoft and Sega took that route.
Look where Sega is now and where MIcrosoft is going.
