It's not the size so much as the form factor. I don't recall even the really old cameras placing the lens far to one side of the chassis like this. If you can rotate it to put the lens on top, it would be better, but still seriously awkward.

  7. Re:Note to Sony Re: combination laptop camera on Sony Vaio GT3/K: You Spilled Your Laptop on my Camcorder · · Score: 1

The integrated camera is unfortunate unless they've designed swappable camera modules for it. I only skimmed the review, but I assume it's a lower end single CCD camera which means it's probably useful as geek toy of the day and that's about it.

Firewire is plenty fast assuming it is 25Mbps DV (which is plenty sufficient in terms of quality).

If your primary concerns are quality and storage capacity, then this obviously wouldn't be tha camera for you. It would be best suited for ENG/EFP use. Obviously, there's no "one size fits all" solution or else news, digital film, and hobbyists would all use the same cameras...

  11. Re:750/30p? WTF? on First HDTV Camcorder · · Score: 1

Claims like "750 lines" quite often refer to the ability of the optics to resolve detail. Generally the optics in any given camera are capable of more than the CCD's or other hardware (for obvious reasons).

  18. Re:"Anime" - a fancy name for cartoons. on Anime and the Future of Digital Animation · · Score: 1

Where did this French urban legend begin? It seems to be everywhere now. First of all, the Japanese don't really use French. It would be an extremely unusual anomoly for them to suddenly decide to use the French word for animation, especially when early on there were heavy influences from the US.

Secondly, contractions of English words and phrases are common in Japanese. If you understand how English words are transliterated into Japanese, you can see that:

    ANIMATION becomes:

A-NI-ME-SHYO-N (SHYO being SHI and YO contracted)
    which in turn becomes:

    A-NI-ME

Much like "personal computer" becomes PASOCOM, "convenience store" becomes CONBINI, and "television" becomes "TEREBI".

It is *coincidence* that anime and dessin-anime are pronounced in a similiar manner. Given Typical Japanese contraction methods (which are used for *English* as has already been pointed out) there is no way that "dessin-anime" would have been contracted into "ANIME".
