IS very interesting indeed! This is a whole new concept for the linux community, now you can help look after other careless peoples mistakes and make linux more secure!
This would be great as a full-time project for someone. It works kind of like a distributed effort and is completely automated. When someone releases a new toy for the script kiddies it should be even easier to release the patch, but a MOBILE patch in this case. Awesome..
Oh but I would suggest that the roaming patches like this worm only inform the owner of the box of a URL where a disinfectant can be obtained, that way the 'good' worm won't damage some systems by accident.
The best way to deal with rude people, i know this from experience, is to be polite back to them. You can complain later and get them in trouble if what they've done is outrageous, but if you're nice to them, they usually feel bad and stop being rude.
I go to a large university which shall remain nameless. (on account of network security services now knowing me by name).
Anyway, recently I downloaded the cvs of nmap. 'let's test it'. I see some connections to my computer, so I scan them.
Next thing I know I get a very nasty letter from the LAN security people saying that I had been found guilty of the following activities:
Port Scanning
And that said activities may be illegal under federal and state law, and that they would assist in providing evidence to the proper authorities if I persisted.
I was very pissed. They also said it violated their user agreement and I could be immediately taken off the network.
Guess what? LIES!
I looked through their entire user agreement and nothing was mentioned about port scanning.
When I managed to meet with them, the head of network security was very rude and confrontational, however his two co-workers (not rude) did tell me that it wasn't illegal in any way and indeed not against their user agreement; it was just a scare tactic.
Now, I don't think this kind of thing is right at all. Maybe this is what happened to this kid, the people disciplining him decided to scare him so he wouldn't do it again. Obviously they went too far.
Yes, it was an illegal act, but probably no harm was done, and nothing would have come of it. Now look at what happened.
I really admire the EU informational privacy laws. They have finally got something right.
For those of you unfamiliar with the laws there, they basically state that to do ANYTHING with someone's personal information you have to have a valid reason and the person's permission.
This applies to information already collected before the passing of the laws.
It affects everything. Eg. a teacher can no longer just post student's grades.
Also, if you're collecting data, you have to have a valid reason and are under no circumstances allowed to share personal information gathered with other companies without the express permission of the individual.
This puts the advantage right back into the individual's side of the deal. And so it should.

and if anyone felt inclined to ask the question. heres the answer:
Genetics are at least as complicated as the brain and we have essentially no experience with them.
No. I can take a complete oposite view of this. Genetics can be as simple as a single gene makes a single protein. I've done it myself, it's called cloning and can have very powerful effects. Also, as you point out later on in your post, there are decades of experience. Even Mendel was learning about the basics of genetics when he bred his little pea plants. That's what you get for using such a broad term.
What are there, a couple tests for genetic diseases, a kind of corn that keeps leaking into the mainstream supply and an identity test that couldn't convict OJ?
ok, 1 apple + 1 orange != 2 apples:
Those couple of test for genetic diseases SAVE HUNDREDS of lives probably more. Do you think any other branch of science could test for genetic diseases?
The corn leakage problem is one of farming and not genetics. Put a damn plastic sheet around them.
OJ did it. The tests PROVED it. The fact that he didn't get convicted is a matter of people lying to themselves. Genetics wont be able to fix the problem people have with ignorrance and denial for a long time yet.
Couple that with the fact that it isn't 'simply' genetics, but also the surrounding cellular chemistry that makes the genes work that needs to be studied.
My friend, the 'surrounding cellular chemistry' is made up of 2 things. The direct product of the genetic material and the environment. The environment is simple.
Some of the major problems in peoples genes, ie. genetic diseases are simple 1 gene problems. As such, scientists are successful at treating these diseases which formerly had NO cure today.
Look at cystic fibrosis. It's a genetic disease which causes great discomfort in people and ultimately leads to their death around the age of 20. It's also reasonably common. It's caused by a mutation in only one gene, which leads to a problem in their lung cells.
5 years ago scientist were already getting good results on trials. And in some ways what they were doing is more complicated than genetic engineering, it was gene therapy, where you change the dna of living organisms in vivo.
Plasmid and viral vectors were being experimented with. IIRC one of the viral trials had a 70% success rate in just about curing people.
Yes, in general, it will be on heck of a task to know what everything in our genes really means. Then on top of that there are very complicated interactions. There are illnesses and processes however, which are dependant upon simple interactions and few genes. Those will be understood much more easily and that can have a great impact during your lifetime.
what you fail to grasp is that a hardware schematic does not imply hardware that works as per the schematic.
The software source IS the product, therefore there will never be a difference between how the source and the product perform.
eg I can buy a board with a perfectly good schematic, but if a transistor is fried the board will not work. thats why a warranty is needed in that case IMHO.
" the tax structure justly puts the burden of public finance on those who benefit from it (the poor) rather than on those who don't (the rich). The rich receive absolutely nothing from the government. They should not be expected to pay for somebody else's goodies."
What kind of ignorance is this? I suppose that the rich don't use roads, they don't have SS#'s, they don't have drivers licences, they don't vote, they don't live in organised cities, they don't use the police services, they don't use the courts or the law system, they don't use any public infrastructure at all do they? Are you ignorant or was this just a 'type-before-you-think' post? only a very small fraction of taxes go towards welfare (i assume thats what you mean the rich shouldn't pay for huh?). I guess the poor, who have no money, should be the ones to pay for all the taxes with their non-existant money.
I'm not going to argue whether or not welfare is right however theres no way in hell you're gonna convince me that those with more money shouldn't pay a larger share towards public infrastructure because the more money you have, the less important it is to your standard of living. To a rich person, $50 might be nothing more than a small luxury while to someone less fortunate it may mean the difference between going hungry for a week or eating well.
What is meant by the phrase "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer" is a two-way feedback system. In a capitalist society, money = power. The rich are more powerful than the poor. They not only get their way more often, they also have money to invest and generate even more funds (the topic?). That's the way it works. You need money to make money most of the time. We're all equal under the law, but everyone knows damn well that money buys a HELL of a lot of equality.
So... don't come around with your snobby pole + arse attitude generated by your greedyness and fear. Maybe you should try living in the shoes of one of those you fear for a while to see what hardships they go through and that the cards are OFTEN stacked against them. Maybe then you would give up yelling 'THEFT THEFT' when a man steals a loaf of bread from your bread factory so he does not go hungry one more night.
God Cmdr taco, you are so damn wasteful. How are you going to just include EVERYTHING and the kitchen sink? You know, a lot of people don't have cable, therefore the cable modem would be a waste of money. A lot of people would never use certain functions and they would be a waste of money and space. The radio for example, I would never touch that thing. Each person is different and most people would hardly be using any of that monstrocity.
Why not just work on each individual parts or software, make them modular and base the entire thing on the PC. For most of these things you can just use extra cards anyway.
If you wanted one of these boxes, you'd go out and buy a PC, plug in the cards you need and install the software. For people who aren't knowledgeable about such things, they would go to a small opensource computer shop and buy one taylor made for them there.
I mean, all the hardware features you meantioned are already available on PC's. TV tuner cards, radio tuner, input, cdrom, dvdrom etc etc. We need the software to put this all to work not a big hardware monstrocity.
I already have a TV card in my PC... WHY can't I have tivo functionality yet? why can't I descramble cable channels at will? I already have a dvd player etc etc etc.
HELL YEAH they *are* the good guys!!
well, some of them anyway. What you don't realise is that back when IBM were the bad guys they emploed different people.. now they are employing cool linux geeks and putting $1,000,000,000.00 into linux.
The way I see it, IBM is now made up of different groups of people and some of them are really cool. You even see evidence of confrontations between the different factions within IBM.. Look at THIS
The do have good guys there:) they even pull in the reins on their layers for god sakes... How many companies do you see doing as much as they do for opensource..
granted not the entire company is made up of good guys, but a good portion of them do seem to 'get it'.
IBM will do great things for linux. Yes, because it suits them, but I don't mind.
oh i crack myself up. I just pictured everyone going out and drawing the logo of their favourite alternative OS. A tux here, a devil there, then a YAK or whatever the GNU absurdity is.
Not only that, but where they do have to get subpoenas how hard do you really think it is for them? I'd bet my life savings that they have at least one judge in every state completely in their pocket just for this purpose.
his is great.. If anyone is in doubt about the quality of loki's software, I suggest you go to their site and download their demo software. You will see just how great their games are. I like some of their ports BETTER than the original windows version.
