no! and yes! well... the software is more like a english writing you can't really expect it to be 100% reliable, until you can control compilers and other things. I do agree with you however, processors should stop adding instructions and imporove on current set of instrucutions. That is one point. The other is compilers and third party tools. Each is being created with tools that are inherently are black boxes. Further more, you may use Borland C++ and created of external package may use GCC. There are different versions of tools, each one produces code quite a bit different from other. How are you going to control that code? You can't. If you are talking about couple of thousand lines of code for microcontroller, that may be inspected for specific bugs much easier then 1.5 million codebase of commercial airline website.
For one thing, people *got* to make up their minds on exactly what they want. Not waffle, around.
reliability. further, we expect more and more features and expect it at a low price. People who design software, do so on language that is backwards compatible with ones 20 years ago, namely C++, which carries some of the many failures on many levels into living applications. Now the language is not wrong, but how many people really considered writing their applications, say in Lisp, Scheme or Forth. Each language has its advantages, yet economics of software development demand that people should use most widespread language, so that it would not be as hard to hire decent software developers. What most managers do not realize is that by choosing a language they meddle in the affairs of those who know the field much better... The is whole stigma with using software tools, languages being the core. And often it is decided by managers who do not carry responsibility for development and manintenace of the software. And even if they do common fallacies used to justify imposition of specific tools onto software teams. However sometimes teams are fortunate enought to have choice in matter of tools, yet they never really have the way to verify that something they have created is exactly what a customer needs. Scrutiny by expert users is often absent from software development... except games! So what do you expect? Incomplete requirements, unfit tools... list goes on and on. Very few people are able to cut through the bullshit, and crap in general to get a very good software package out. Nevermind treat their employees right. Bugs is corporate software are just some of the sysmptoms corporate world bearing off, core of the problem being, is sheer miscommunication in way public companies are handled - which is what most of software companies are.
In the end it is all about compromises and vision. Software bugs are just side effects, that will exaterbate any main problems a software company has. (that is bugs in tested and released software).
Plus something that was not tested for and does not have fatal outcome on the program is not a bug, i'd rather qualify it as a glitch... my 2c.
Sure some people who have linksys and friends type boxes may be burned, but: 1. it will not work with most avid wireless zealots. 2. there is way to mask particular network stack behaviours with little extra code in iptables.
I propose better way: ISP just drives around connecting randomly to open networks, use wget http://wirelesstest.somelameisp.com, and track see where data is coming from. If it comes from inside, bigo, got one. Even better, know his address and his account. Cancel it!
But who cares? This is sure way to generate negative publicity, about broadband. And there is plenty of it already, with @home dead. Only proper way to deal with hogs is either 1. bill them, and provide same quality service. Upgrade if its needed. 2. Sack them if they don't pay.
For one, I would not mind having 200KB uplink, and have some sort of cap on that, but have that available to me. If provider sacks me, will be sure not to use uplinks they provide within their colocation facilities, once my business grows. They sell colo bandwidth, didn't you know that? Bling bling! If they piss off their technically advanced customers, they will loose potential customers for their high end colo facilities.
Its best to be clear and forthcoming on what your terms are, not handout 5000 lawyer written, ass covers. Provide efficent path for upgrades, for people who suck uplink bandwidth. Maybe they are not even aware of it. Maybe they run the site from their home, for their tiny business and their customers get pissed off when they can't buy stuff. If it is a warez sharing wanker, well narrow his bandwidth or send him letter explaining bandwidth caps and billing strategy. Bandwidth within the network should be 100% free however.
Point is made, make your customers your friends through dialog, don't piss them off, by cutting them off. If they want to run wireless point, stick them with business package and widen their bandwidth. Give them options.
It should be easy, if they wanted to check, make data in felony tables depend on two other tables, 1. Table which describes the source, probably with address, name, their social insurance number, picture, etc. 2. Person that have actually filed said information, Police officer, his name, S.I.N. 3. Person who entered the said file, with their location computer and their details as well.
All the above given, it would be easy to dispute such information with a few queries, to be wrapped into nice buttons, such as 'Lookup Filers List of claims' with stats attached. Further if there are typings on records, there can be use for GROUP BY clause, totalling how many reports said authority made, and if they have been overzealously filing said reports on their friends/ex-spouses/ex-friends/coworkers.
Then you can use constraints to make sure that people don't funk up data too much. It is amazing how people can misuse computers, most likely due to misunderstanding of their purpose and abilities. I would demand access to said database, if they claim that i am a terrorist, and I am not. Clearly I won't get access to it.
I think we must wait for carnage that would come from misuse of said databases, total up stats, who have been dealt wrong and launch a massive suit against DOJ to open up database for public scrutiny. Special teams must be assembled, that would be allowed verify technical feasibility of data in database, and perhaps provide hooks into the database that would generate harmless data, such as various statistics, and hooks to pull your profile up in some government office, and get it printed. System can be even setup that I would get a yearly mailing of all my offences to my address that I would register with the office. Or monthly mailing of my offences for low fee of some 20$ a year. If someone starts ratting your ass out, you'd see right there.
Further, more database good can be used, say a case is open on you. Some facts are deposited into the database, they can be marked as being related to open case, then they won't show in your monthly form. BUT after case is CLOSED, all said records will reappar in your file, and you would get details of your case in next mailing of forms.
For nerds and those with computers a website can be set up to be ran on OpenBSD to pull up said reports. Before you would get to pull info about yourself on the computer, you'd have to show in carbon form to your government office, with many identification bits, to get username and password associated with your S.I.N. number.
In short there can be effort made to use compters to streamline our society make it fair for everyone, but it is not what we mean to do, right? We try to cajole everything we do, to make ourselves are responsibility free as we can. Its just too bad, because this world can be so much better if computers are to be used to the best of their abilities. =)

what blows me is that new disc format players out now don't have digital outputs. The whole point of digital is to bring "exact" quality of audio recording to listener. Making players without digital outputs, forces me to use analog transmission path, which is less exact and more suceptible to 'colouration'. To escape colouration of sound i must use very very expensive cable, no matter the player i use, wether its 100$ radio shack SA-CD player or 2000$ pioneer elite one. Futher, when new upgradable amplifiers become cheap, with functionality like that of some anthem amps,i will use cd player as only reader, and update software from internet to decode any digital stream from a source / SA-CD / DVD-A / somefoo... with decoders embedded in players I am fucked and have to buy a new player a new codec comes out. I am sorry but this is retarted. To get good audio quality out of my DVD-A toshiba, into my kick ass Rotel amp, I had to spend 300$ on cables. I am rather pissed, while sound quality is very very good, i suspect placing decoder so far away from amp, is very bad idea, the whole point of digital revolution in A/V, is placing decoding devices right near reproduction source, and using random source devices. no the other way around! gah. Of course, with piss poor job market, I might as well start business of winding cables... intent of industry is clear, and only way to get decent sound out of sources is via decent cables.
seen now it is still very expensive to do radiostations on the internet. once we have IPv6, anyone who will have cable modem will be able to have a gig online, with extremely large amounts of listeners and have O(1) bandwidth consumption. Switch is already on the way, many large carriers are switching to IPv6 , only hope is that multicast is enabled. Multicast is often misunderstood and a source of pain for many it departments, because it was an easy target to cause alot of damage. If I were you, I would have fingers crossed for multicast to come, and if you are sysadmin - learn as much as you can and enable Multicast on your subnet.
after all code is what is governing cyberspace not laws. with multicast it would be very hard to track down and punish those who don't pay respect and dues to governments/corporations.
