I you can use older of newer version. This is a very smart move by RMS. If say there is a new situation in the world he'll be able to give people options with new licences, hopefully not allowing for regular style licences(commercial, no source). Get over it.:) 2c.

Read this: java is made for people with poor programming skills.
I read it as an assault on industrialization of programming effort into minimum requirenment code production boxes , called programmers. It is much about deculturization of software development trade.
If you are working for mega corporation where mertis of technical tools are not considered, you probably working for company that will not respect your decisions. Aside from learning curves, I'd hire any decent developer and allot them 1 week of intensive python learning. In java things are much much different, i'd allot a month.. or just look for a new developer. Myopic view that there is more developers in technology du jour field, does not qualify that your project will succeed or be usable. Tool must be chosen on technical merit. Particular language is no obstacle to developer, since they all are same, of the oject oriented bunch. I agree using Forth to design your webserver is absurd, but for embedded devices it should not be so bad. Sun used it for boot rom software. Forth is made to write fast programs if terse and small. So learning small program would not pose much overhead. You should note that most of the time developers become useful after average of less then 1 month time at any rate. They have to learn the code base, understand conventions. 2 weeks is common. Of course the desire of companies is to have developers as interchangable as light bulbs. They also would like developers not to be paid, have no benefits have no social lives.
One can make bad decisions on choosing tools. However most often companies don't give merit of choosing tools to developers anyway.
Yes I was popular in high school, and I was in many sports teams.
I hate hate curly braces, and any other non alpha-numeric clutter that pollutes my code reading/writing space. And now we enter python/ruby. No matter how may technologies there are for Java, unless I have to explicity use it, I won't. Don't get me wrong I don't like writing english for code like cobol either. But if language institutes good layout format for all developers, I'm all for that. Let rest of languages participate in obfuscation contest and be winners, because thats what all those punctuation marks endorse, obfuscation, even if it is to drastically less then of the contest winners.
As for popularity, popularity is an empty word. Popularity is applied in highschool, to denominate one's worth on what most people, pretend to think of you. These are adults, even if young ones that are building this technology sector. Lets rid ourselves of words demoninating public valuations and acceptance and do whats RIGHT.
Of course graduates learning Java as the centerpiece of their skill sets will disagree, but they are at the conflict of interest... Sun might object. But then they object the GNU licencing, gee what does that leave me to believe...
Thousands of transactions on what ? Mainframe? A PC? an AMD server? PIII latop? Quad xeon server. Sorry speed metrics in software systems has to be backs against a hardware unit, otherwise they are useless. And transcation can include X amount of queries. thanks.
PS: someone on slashdot should enable Spell check button, since so many people are out of English speaking states. Maybe make it a requirenment...:)
MySQL was an outgrowth of the data acquisition project for particle accelerator or some such thing. Their motivation was to do inserts as fast as possible, which is why the design was so crappy, relatively to what it supposed to be. However, at the time horsepower was still rather expensive, meaning per page rendered with usage of some sort of database mechanism... yes MySQL was faster if you used it right. Website data is not as crucial as say, bank data. And if you do your backup regularly, then losses would be minimal. MySQL database file format was far far more resilient, compared to postgres(7.2), which required index rebuild on a bad crash. MySQL was really really good deal for cheap hosting. Invisibe hand showed what people use most. Now many are graduating to postgres as real database. MySQL will still be viewed as pretend RDBMS, except mysql zealots. It has built an image for itself. If it does all the new tricks (proper transactions, views, cursors, replication) , then its not mysql anymore in my mind. its mysqlNG or some such thing. you get the point. 2c
If apple gets right down to it and doesn't let motorolla spoil the "simplicity" of the interface, the other carriers will have no way stand up to this partnership. People still buy 500$ ipods, like photo ipods. If the product is really good people won't hesitate spending money on it. With most cellphones , interface is at best rather difficult, besides dialing the number. So compared on ease of use most cellphones suck compared to how iPod compares to all other music players.
I for one would be worried to drop iPod phone, because i do drop my other cells regularly. My guess ipod won't be used as headset but rather with handsfree device of some kind, which would be welcomed, i drop my cell so many times. would they be working then on iPod shuffle based phone? Because that would look more logical, but less unique way. Suppose iPod may well integrate sudden motion sensor to park harddrive??? That would make ipod phone durable and usable alternative... Look at ngage however, device integration has to be careful, because you might just destroy image of your company. Motorolla cells have best reception of all cellphones, so I hope they make killer iPod phone.
Its is quite disappointing to see artists becoming enterprising industrial businessmen, where they don't spend time perfecting their art but rather make a business of what they do. There is nothing wrong with this, but demands from creative types for steady flow of income and riches seems to becoming more of a focus for artists.(Notwithstanding mass produced trash).
"Btw, if anyone wants to shop for cheap metal, I have found http:///www.theendrecords.com to have a great online store for distributing popular and obscure stuff. It's even got free shipping in the U.S."--- I would say that you are in conflict of interest, saying that disobidience is criminal, because you own a store, therefore it is not in your interest to say anything but, damnations against 13 year old kids sharing music.
See, market in North america is pretty much static, markets of the world are not, what they are trying to do is to control world markets not US markets. Myopic and fucked up vision from media companies, who scared shitless of facist china who does not give damn about ripping off their worthless media by way of stamping out millions of plastic duplicates, never mind whole new cars and electronics pieces. Everyone is trying to gain up on control of far east, China, India. While siting in labs in california, offices in new york looking west pondering the future , where North american market is only small fraction of world market and world market that does not like to pay for licenced goods.
It is the war and we are witnessing the remakings of the world. They are becoming more apparent to everyday live now.
Unless a teenager, I rather beg to differ, they have paid for it, maybe at the black market but they did. Now RIAA didn't have their fingers in that pie. And they didn't set the pricing, what a shame. my 2c.
No it was justification for firing them, If they were fired without a cause they can sue the government for big bundles of cash. Security as is an elisive term, its where you draw the line, so you can end up discriminating much without needed reason even though you were mistaken, that is if you have the power to lay where the line lies. I am ready speculate that this was the case.
Those who took applied physics, chemistry and other things have now chance to lead themselves into new market that will emerge real soon. No one really talks about it as a market, but developing stuff, bits , even software about energy conservation is the future. VTEC is computer software/hardware by honda makes fossil fuel powered carriges more efficent. What will you develop? Patent it! You are one suppose to benefit from patents not patent holding corporations.
At any rate if you start slowly rolling company about something tangible like , house power management computer. Anything that prys ones dependance away from fossil fuels, you might strike rich.
Truth is , when people already talking about the market its already too late.
That would run countered to game industry, suddenly those kids won't be running games. Suddenly people will be writing OpenGL games instead. Suddenly platform is not much issue anymore. I think they want to crimp down on smart business fish that evaded nets of juBSA.
People citing having in house development team, but they don't cite truism, managing programmers is like herding cats. There are managers that can energize coders with storm of cheap nerd-gets, etc etc. Keep them cranking code. Most of the time COTS does look like better solution, because in hindsight custom solution looks as hard, but then you have to deal with unruly programmer. Well, to have good product you have to justify manager and at least 2 programmers. Programmers shall be happy working with small team size where they will have less of social geek life too.
I general its not that COTS is better or worse, its just managing and being responsible for team of coders is harder to absorb then having relationship with COTS over support phone line. From perspective of PHB.
Time to start brushing up on mandarin and japaneese i guess. Say sayonara to english internet and english boot messages, time to buck down and purchase that japaneese dictionary you were eyeing for a while!;-)
Writer makes comparison to internet, while superficially it is like that, we all know that spectrum is limited while number of websites and brodacast stations one can have is virtually unlimited. Not true with radio spectrum. There are other bits with radio stuff, like behaviour of radio waves at lower bands, that they tend to go farther, and are less like a "light" of 1Ghz+ bands. I would guess cellurization of bandwith would be good idea, say once someone buys bandwidth for say 1km radius they have to use bandwith within like6 months to a year... would be good way to get people to share.
Policing this kind of stuff would be a nightmare though. There will have to be "spectrum" police, that would punish those who interfere with other's bandwiths allocations. At present time they can triangulate you down from one station and come to your house if you forcing CNN out of the air waves. All in all it will take technical remake of everything to be redone. And it does not bode well with people who hold fists of cash in front of FCC clerks. Fact that FCC has to be remade... So really it won't happen unless it will be imperative of the president, his office and congress. Even then they'd probably screw something up. 2c
