It is so, and this move can be construed as something to help with the election campaign, nothing more. The fire will be lit under his ass, to be impeached way out of the house, so he's trying to look good, but there is no money in treasury anymore to do such things. Even if there was, it is just hand waving, as some pointed to relief for disasters like a Katrina. I think Bush is obtuse, rather then malicious. Political spinsters firing off right left and center. I think equating him to hitler is a bit too much. I don't like the guy, he fucked alot of things up, but if you really know campaigns, this is in line with self promotion, the usurpation. He already crossed may constitutional lines, and now trying to make up for it.
It is election season, spinsters about. Whatever news says, you bet it will be bent in every 'legal' way to misrepresent one or other side. Welcome to the twilight zone:) This election will be interesting, with all malfunctioning Diebolds. Think hanging chads were bad... wait until you see this one. 2c
President can alter and sign the bill, it seems that he altered the bill by removing conditions, that preclude the enaction of such measures. In the end letting enact at any time with or without the cause.
this sucks, because, how can travelling photographer fix his camera while on assignment in another country? or extended vacation. "Protection" on imported items, is bullshit, because other individuals take it up onto themselves to send items, company is not involved in the process. If they don't make profit in markets where they sell product for cheaper, they won't sell there at all. Warranties are generally same around the world for large companies. I cannot see why company would need to 'protect' market. You mean they don't get as much profit as they would otherwise, by splitting markets. And thats the crux of the problem between global consumers and controlling corporations. This is a new world and they try to force an old world solution onto us. If the product is technically different then sure, don't support it. Like having different components, different and unavailable at any cost components. There is alot of trade between US and Canada, does it mean that I have to stop ordering from amazon because addison wesley has 'different marketing and pricing strategy?' give me break. If I don't buy from their canadian outfit, that means their marketing strategy has failed and me being responsible for that is non-sense. The situation here is same as with recording industry. Draconian laws unfit for a new age of borderless trade, digital distribution control. And in this case, international trade control by manufacturers as oppose to fast an flexible micro merchants, like liksang.
With exploding batteries and branding me as a thief(if I'd buy from non-sony endorsed outfit), I'd lay off any sony products for quite a while. Before mid nineties, I would sternly recommend everyone to buy Sony for quality and relation with company that has excellent product support. A good well rounded company. At this time, I cannot do so. In fact on both counts as well, company went way downhill on quality. Makes terrible TV sets, doesn't have plasma, their batteries explode. It only recently started thinking that Atrac really sucks and minidisc is not the way to go, even then someone has inspired them to use minidisc like reader in PSP. With there and rootkit tactics and forcing small and able online retailer by crude litigation, I see no reason to endorse it anymore.
I have to look to some other brand, for my sympathies. It will not be sony any time soon. my 2c
I have looked over, what was posted and couldn't make out if someone seen, few glossed over the idea, and I would like to emphasize it. Apple does not have capacity to maintain large clients. They are big on promises, small on delivery. They key word here, is company to company relationships. Now you can order a swath of Dell PC's and most likely you'll get preferrential treatment from them. No so with apple. They make a point of that as well. Most recently they had gall to come to university here and sell computers, telling how wonderful their OS is. Well it is. What university students stand to gain from learning Carbon and Cocoa. Pretty much nothing. Most UI design jobs are nowadays with.NET and derivatives. (look at your favorite job board). So fine, their platform is superrior(i have a powerbook). However my professor and some other businesses had terrible dealings with apple, on business level. Professor worked at other university where apple had installed 2 large classrooms with early power pc computers and promptly proceeded to ignore the customers that suppose to become future developers and/or businessmen/leaders at large corporations, that possibly will order superrior apple hardware. Not so. No extra support beyond repairing hardware under warranty terms and having sales people calling about "more hardware", at a standard educational 15% discount.
So, it is small they like, iPod is selling at least for a while. But that would take you only so far. When you fall on hard times, you fall onto your relationship net that you had built up over number of years.
So during their presentation at the university, they have ignored questions about the relationship and his experience at previous university, only ignored the questions and continued their sales pitch. Needless to say, there are no orders of powerbooks, iMacs or MacPros. The feeling you get is that they eager to extract money from you and run. Questions like, "will there be deeper discounts if we fully commit to apple platform?" , was no, just standard discount. Write us a check please. I don't know much about business, but unless they alter the way they handle business clients, in the end apple will end up in the same ditch.
Apple has failed at ability to build relationships with large businesses, and completely unable to maintain those that were already in place. They are still unable to do so, which will lead to their demise, unless they alter course. Consumer market is unstable, can be swayed by many things. Business and government markets always bring reliable income, but they have no ability at this time to access those markets. In the least these markets are not very attractive from lifestyle perspective apple puts itself out as.
Like you have mentioned, they aren't able. And they'll never admit. Because my professor's friend and another friend had real bad dealings with them, on business relationship level. They just "don't get it".
ipod sells well but it will last only for so long. government and large business contracts is the stable income a company can fall back onto, in harder times. a net that apple does not have.
Apple failed to learn how to build real business relationship with large businesses. They have no experience at that, which is why they will suffer. University hardware support programs are terrible, basically amount to selling hardware and running for it. No relationship building capacity. What can you expect from iconoclastic california company?
Their products are excellent don't get me wrong, it is just that they learned how to download products onto customers, while having excellent technical support, they have no ability/capacity/experience to deal with large clients. Which will lead to their downfall, eventually. 2c.
From what I understand he was poor manager, poor leader. Of all things he had the gall to lay hard rules down, being hard ass on the team making wonderful products. That however singled him out as a unwilling to yield to anything that compromises his elitist principles, being difficult to approach. Which is why apple suffered, which is why it will keep on doing mediocre for a while. There is number of things outlined by excellent research done by people who wrong iCon 2.0.
I love their products, but that doesn't mean they are the best company to deal with. There was this presentation by Apple at my university, that they wanted to sell us alot of Macs at discounted price, whatever. My professor, counted to them, that his friend working at other university was frustrated, that 5 years back they have sold a number of machines to them, promising to support and work with the staff, only being stonewalled by apple. They are still a flakey california company with no real experience in business world, the markets like that. Apple users have been accustomed to taking from jobs "up the ass". Until they will at least start pretending to care, nothing will change. Apple will still sell limited market cool alternative, that no one should learn if they wish to participate in larger markets. Snob is a snob. no way around it, and steve has perferected the art.
extend it further, most people aren't as rich and don't employ loudmouth lawyers and pr people, who should have their teeth smashed out with a large hammer. this is capitalist/imperialist country, what makes dollars, makes sense, everything else gets swept under the rug. civil disobedience doesn't pay. but i think people are getting sick of the status quo, biggest budget deficit in years, i wonder if china won't finance this budget deficit with their reserves. people depend on wealth and strength of north america, but make no mistake, as soon america can be made obsolete at some bearable cost, china will do it in a whince.
liberties of united states, have to be freed from all the cruft that has been place atop of them, which in the first place made the country great. great americans need to come out and make a stand against despotism that has been eminating from bush and his cronies. eliminate them, and you'd still have a ways to go. pedophile scandal is what democrats needed i think to wring this election from corrupt imperial pedophiles.
I dunno, but monocultures tend to swift people away from selecting their own race. So I'd say it won't happen. How many times white dudes would prefer to be with some colored girl. To prove the point, in one country i went to, females are exceptionally beautiful, yet men there would prefer to be with white women. So much as they don't have tanning lotions. They have whitening ones. O' horror i have seen 'whitened' dark people. Like albinos. Real weird stuff. Anywhoo you get the point.
As soon as there is a large rift, there will be jumpers, that will bridge the gap within 100 or so years. So for example, a smart man or a woman would love to be with other kind(as per baby production), the other part being beautiful or strong, well built, respectively. But then its hard to say whats gonna happen next year, who knows how it will be in 100000 from now? Computer permutation model will not account for exceptions, that happen way too often in life. cheers, 2c
Well yeah if you kill people by thousands, people tend to start hating you. When you support state that cause genocide against muslims ( which is israel ) some people might consider that you have practical concerns of eradicating them and/or sumbitting them to the life of control under Rouge nuclear state, which is Israel. And whole talk of judo-christian faith, how is that we are part of the judaism. I mean its cool religion, but disarm israel, give them m16's and arm their children with rocks and see who wins, just to make things fair. America is about fair right?
But truth isn't so simple , on these geopolitical scales. Israel was spawned by military industries into its artificial existence today. Why artificial, its because it imposes same burdens on people of muslim descent of palestinian origin as they bore, at least as history books say , during WWII.
As in this stride to make facts about government operations as opaque as possible, government serves no one, but terrorists by submitting free society at large into state of fear. In the end they won, freedoms curbed, government incapacitated and unable. There is only a shroud of pretending to understand terrorist problem, which is really comes down to what Team America was all about. America is a bully and ones not cowing in fear will be fubared into the future.
On a side note, artifical intelligence was(and is) a bane on research computing communities. Most people will recommend you not to take up PhD in AI, because, besides being hard, you will have to compromise any scientific integrities of your project and come up with something to show, ie not large but not complete step in solving large domain problem, but demonstrable short term gain research... 2c
well they are portable, imagine kid from hong kong comes down to airport in say frankfurt, wants a new game, and his gameboy tells him to take a hike. I'd toss that console pretty fast. Stationary entertainment systems don't travel as much, so their market share won't be dented as much by the "annoyed" customers. Or so I'd think from their prespective. I mean even if you get copy of windows, you don't own it you get licenced to use a copy that can be , logistically speaking revoked. Thinking in twisted corporate ways, sometimes lets you figure a way to untwist them. Remember corporations of now have been desclared to have presonalities of psychopath [1]. What can you really expect;-)
Well this sort of sucks. Looks like they are setting up the nets to catch future chippers of future and current plaforms, if they ever to do business in United States. What is odd, say they can build up a set of cases using which they can try to streamline cases into playing. Like they can have a case UK case against an american company, and mutually exclusive precedents will be set up, by winning them.
It should be required to have presence of company representative at these hearings, otherwise the case should be declared invalid. I wonder if such cases will have significant weight in deciding future cases against US led companies that might be treading similar waters. IANAL:-)
I think the idea there is with licenced copyrights for mixing in, cannot be controlled as effectively as pieces of paper standing on a shelf in a bookstore or a library. As we reeling into the new age people still trying to hang on to bits of old one, and they stand to loose. Information flow is like a light if you stop it from flowing, it disappears like a light. I suppose there should be a new term, on mutablility of the infomration and how successful the original bit is, in speed and amount of mutation on the original. 2c.
If this guy really runs software company and difference of say 50K in total software costs, really matters, then the company won't do well. Clearly the switch was base on accounting numbers not on logistics of entire development process. Digging deeper, it went something like that: 1. we have potential great customer, lets hire developers. 2. developers say lets do linux. ok. 3. hire middle managers. the say: where are our support licences for the software we are going to use and bundle? 4. about the same time, customers, we are microsoft branded customer. 5. accountant we are paying 100K in licencing to costs to redhat.
mba-ish cto looks at 3,4,5. Calls around looking for cheaper stuff. he slashes cost by 50K. Bonus! thinks: i get a new sports car for that much.
I would think it went in same vein, after making a post like that. indeed support for close software is more expensive, minus redhat, is because things have to be fixed. Installed base is smaller bad news and reviews will get around fast. So you have to have competent staff. In spirit of OSS you get access to internal bug tracking system. You get to have your own bug tickets and have meaningful support. With proprietary stuff, you get, if you're large enough: " we will see if the feature/bugfix conflicts with our larger clients and possibly we will ship with our new version.... are you interesting in subscribing to our software distribution network? it is only 2500$ a year..." etc etc.
That is the problem of the upper management to be able to balance multitude of variables over choosing a direction, and being able to listen to lower ranks and external sources, to make the best view the way company would go forward. I mean if you work for a bank and they run all windows software, you have little choice but to go microsoft way. If you have whole load of windows developers but your contract stipulates that code must run in 64k of ram and on 15Mhz processor you can't really use your windows developers or their windows skillset and windows software.
Looks like the guy makes a point, from high above purely on numbers and clearly he can't be an upper management or owner of the company since he takes only narrow set of data to decide upon. I mean unless he is running codeshop in third world country, he can convince people to open a partnership office there, and he'd stand to make money off of it. Selling cheaper copies, say with Hindi only support.
From what I can ascertain, teleportation is of the *STATE* of energy or matter. If somehow it can be twisted, can be made a usefull scanning device, like tricoder, thats my guess. As you can see exact state of matter inside of a solid object.
Or what it would entitle. What are the mechanics of the way it suppose to work. And what are the caveats, like can it be used like a replicators. Is there inherent data loss? It is a popular scientific token, thats been passed around for many years, I just wonder if it is now what we expect it to be. Like atoms that are transported are not exactly same atoms, ie electrons missing.
I understand that through quantum entanglement you can have make exact copy, by imparting one of the two photons onto other matter. When photon is imparted into a new area does described atom disappear from the original location, just like schrodinger's(not sure of the name) cat?
I agree, this will be a boon to cafes and such other places not usual usual early adopters, as those kids in the dorm rooms or concrete appartments. And those with huge properties. I think main idea here is reachablility not speeed. I doublt it will be over 5Mbits a second, unless you sit under the router and have RF transparent surroundings and furniture. I'd take a walk on cynical side. G has given me only about 30-50% improvement in general uses. not 5x. 2c.
Now I wonder if slashdot has become byproduct of media propoganda machine. CNN seems to blast current administration now, I don't make connection between the two, but number of political stories has risen on each, including this one, dramatically, especially relating to current administration. Am only one noticing this? Are we being manipulated? If so by who...
It is same sort of problem of kids and guns like poor neighborhoods. You can jail them(biggest business in USA), you can execute them. But source of the problem is all the same. So lets assume that government has all the data it needs. They still find a way, because they are the terrorists. Same as kids in poor neighborhoods, result to violence because of inescapability of their situation. Humanitarian help won't help here. Giving them rights will.
You see the whole idea started with palestine and how american sponsored buldozing of palestinian neighborhoods came to light. But CNN, CBS etc don't cover it from that point of view. Instead of resolving conflict in israeli/palestinian conflict, we have escalated it, into entire region. Palestinians want their own houses not to be bulldozed, do you want your house to be buldozed by israeli? The original bombing of the twin towers, was executed by palestinian, that had an axe to grind with north american miliary industry supplying latest and greatest to grind up houses, people. People who have rocks and ak-47s to arm themselves.
What I see is United States of America was led into conflict that has been going on for entire millenia, why do we even care? Answer selling arms is very profitable business, especially to destabilized regions. So it comes back to kick you in the ass and you retaliate as if there was no pretext to bombing.
Problem is at the source and United States yet again fumbled up solving this one, thanks to external and internal influences etc.
It is so, and this move can be construed as something to help with the election campaign, nothing more. The fire will be lit under his ass, to be impeached way out of the house, so he's trying to look good, but there is no money in treasury anymore to do such things. With proprietary stuff, you get, if you're large enough: " we will see if the feature/bugfix conflicts with our larger clients and possibly we will ship with our new version

G has given me only about 30-50% improvement in general uses. not 5x.

Perhaps one paraphers don't cut, when experience required in writing introduction conclusion and ability to maintain flow over entire page or five.
The staple name before they came to power, was 'the crazies'. Now it is too late.
Our government sucks.
