Joe Sixpack needs to go to work, come home to supper, make love to his wife once a week, wax patriotic and believe there is some evil country out there he should be glad he doesn't hail from. Much like organized religion, it would seemingly occur to more folks that nationalism is a handy tool to keep the masses happy with their station.
The NSA is making it harder and harder and more difficult, too, for a pasting on of the tinfoil hat label. And then, like a moment of perfect clarity, someone like you posts something like this, and the universe gets a tiny bit less complicated.
"Yessir. But we're not going to be able to cover the cost of that particular level of service with your Prime membership. That's going to be a little extra."
Many job losses, much economic strife, and at least one corporation was saved during the production of this "Bailout." I don't have time to wiki 'Companies Beholden to GM for their Survival', but my gut tells me it's on the order of chins in a Chinese phonebook.
I, too, prefer complete sentences and proper grammar in my attempts at communication. I will admit this has not led to a 'five nines' success rate against misinterpretation during texting, drinking, or driving... although my own personal study suggests you should never do two of these things at the same time.
From the standpoint of your typical national politician, upon whom the fallout of job loss and economic strife will land, too big to fail is a no-brainer. Whether or not these bailouts are actually good for the citizenry as a whole is entirely another matter. Since national elections are funded on the backs of the Corporatocracy, instead of publicly (and evenly) funded, it would appear prudent at this juncture to assume it will continue.
Possibly not. It is unlikely the plagues of yore were prevalent enough to infect everyone... remember, we're talking pre-airlines with a predominantly rural populace.
But your assumption that we need to live sustainably is wrong; humanity has never lived sustainably, and we shouldn't try.
Why not? Because it might inconvenience you? Because it is our god given privilege to pollute the planet?
Seriously, does it hurt to be this myopic?
"A lot of times when you have very short term goals with a high payoff, nasty things can happen. In particular, a lot of people will take the low road there. They'll become myopic. They'll crowd out the long term interests of the organization or even themselves." -Daniel H. Pink
There is some merit in suggesting space exploration should be ramped up a bit before we are out of terrestrial resources, but if humankind's track record is indeed the best predictor of the future, we will likely finally settle off-planet when it is profitable to exploit resources there.
Or. The herd will eventually cull itself to sustainable levels. Humankind has a ready arsenal of population control methods at its disposal, not the least of which are famine and a tenacious appetite for war.

Some people have an evolutionary resistance to cancer in the way their killer t-cells target it more aggressively. Others contract the HIV virus and never get AIDS, and there has been interesting speculation folks with these immunities may be descended from plague survivors from centuries ago. If this immunity can be taught to a cancer-ridden patient's own immune system, essentially someone with no other options, its side effects can then be carefully studied. I would look carefully at autoimmune disorders first.
Maple syrup is a huge plus. But really and truly, nationalized health care>entrenched government corruption.... hell, I could even learn to yell at hockey games.

AC is correct. This lies directly at the doorstep of the voter though, and is part of no grand deception. If the last few million citizens paying attention would be willing to vote for an honourable candidate, meanwhile ignoring his/her slaughter in the media, we wouldn't wind up with these polished anchorman-like leaders with opinions that change with each campaign stop. I can only assume we are very comfortable electing folks who are really skilled at telling us what we want to hear.

Baidu will not be crushed to hear of this.

I'm not sure I like your tone.
Alas! The first mathematically perfect use of "an order of magnitude". Well done sir, well done.

Does $5 buy 10,000 or a million page views at that 5/100ths of a cent each?

+1 Crafty. There will be a 'tell' when this technology is truly viable. It will probably begin in a Congressional Committee for Oversight...

A good sport anyway.

Well, it could've been worse. Don't be hateful, be grateful... hell, second best country in North America ain't half bad.
