    yes. How easy it is to forget the pioneers of philosophy, ethics, science, and debate were often persecuted for their efforts.

    A long serving totalitarian regime, known for suppression of dissent, would invariably condition generations of its populace to avoid confronting the status quo.

    From the far reaches of Mao's introverted China to the warring nations of the West, and yonder into the African continent, the propensity towards a warring culture is synonymous with humankind.

    It seems like we are at our industrious best when working in concert during a time of great conflict.

    Sadly, times of contentment and peace are seemingly less productive. Do we require strife to excel?

    Chinese tend to be very compliant people. When asked about censorship issues, most Chinese will say they appreciate their government insulating them from sensitive information as it makes them feel more comfortable.

    Of course they are!

    One would imagine a good bit of the genetic predisposition towards questioning authority has been bred right out of the populace.

    The problem with social justice is not with its primary mission; striving to make the World a fairer place is a lofty goal indeed. It's just that, realistically, the World and life itself are inherently not so fair... and attempting to eradicate unfairness from life is every bit a fool's errand.

    The World is not black and white. If a Nazi child molester with leprosy showed up at your door with a cure for the cancer your spouse was dying from... you sir, would likely make a deal with that devil.

    I don't see the positive "peace" value in replacing unpleasant authoritarian regimes with totalitarian Islamist theocracies, which is where most of the so-called "Arab Spring" uprisings have ended up.

    You are only going to get hired by one of those companies with a felony record if a standing board member vouches for you and your job will never need public scrutiny. It's just simply a fact.

    But they can certainly start their own businesses to compete with them, and hope that the ease with which competition can create a negative media influence will only slightly affect their bottom lines.

    That's true if you mean you want your paychecks to be from Exxon, et al, but if you're comfortable being recompensed by an Exxon subcontractor, you're dreams are still fulfillable.
