The older we are, the less likely we are to want to go to a movie theatre packed with people who are going to interrupt us during the movie, kick our chairs and throw popcorn. I know that I avoid opening weekends becuase I WANT TO ENJOY THE MOVIE. Episode 2 will continue to do well at the theatres, consistently.

  2. Why Would you Release Engone Code ANyways, on Id Software and Activision Wolfenstein Source · · Score: 1

Of course ID Software is going to be in negotiations to license the engine code to other developers. I think its fair practice due to all their efforts to develop one by themselves. Its better now to release the game data for MOD use which will inspire "counterstrike" offshoots, and therefore more purchasers. When the time is right ID will release the engine at about the same time nobody cares anymore. Its the cycle of things, and it works well.

Is it economically viable for the DOJ to issue more sanctions against MS? I think they have to be reasonable to protect the interests of 'corporate' america. Sanctions against MS arnt going to have initial positive effects on the market. Effects on consumers versus effects on large markets that depend on MS's software, support and their ability to conduct business have to be weighed before a decision can be made.

  7. Its all about Context on Product Placement in Video Games · · Score: 1

There are two considerations to make:

1.) What is the subject of the game?

2.) What is the audience of the game?

These two questions identify the possibility of placing ads within a given game. I think as placement is a great idea because it offloads development costs associated with development. However, if ads persist in games where there is no context to the subject then of course the audience is going to be 'turned off'.

Sports games are great examples of good adverstising potential. In real-world broadcasting, there are ads specific to each sport and viewers not only expect to see billboards and commercials, but actually enjoy in some cases. Games geared toward extreme sports like skateboarding / snowboarding have shown smaller indpepndant companies promote their gear, clothing, and equipment. In those cases it adds realism cause athletes are concerned about the quality of their equipement, even how they look. Gran Turismo is another good example of this, real cars, real accessories, good advertising.

The problem begins when you have to watch a PlaySchool advertisment "before" you get to play Elmo's Great Adventure. Thats just sick.

  8. Coming from A Foccused Course on Is A "Well-Rounded" Education a Good One? · · Score: 1

I dont attend University, I attend College. I am enrolled in a Computer Engineering Technology Course at St. Lawrence College in Kingston ON. I have many friends in CompSci at Different Universities across Ontario. The major difference between what those courses teach and what I learn has to do with 'Hand-on' experience. Currently in my third year I am in a projet group developing an application (NDA - sorry) for a company. This isnt some cheesy VB project either, we're talking QNX, XML, APache, Bluetooth, even programming an embedded webserver. Lots of fun client server stuff.

We're being trained and taught to work in software development, classes in Presentations, Technical Writing, Operating Systems, Discrete Math, Data Structures. Its not University so , I dont have to take Pysch or Sociology like my counterparts at Queens University. Our course is 3 years long (instead of 4 at university) and I am almost guaranteed a job, I already have a years experience working in a project group.

Our class size is small, way smaller compared to a university, and I actually get to know and interact with my proffessors, who are all retired from industry. At Universities, people end up being faceless in the eyes of their "not-enough-effort" proffessors.

The one important thing about an education is that its right for you, if your not enjoying it, then your in the wrong program, that simple. And the stigma that you have to go to University to get a real education is just that.. a stigma

  9. Permanent Ban? or Temporary. on ClearChannel Plays It Safe · · Score: 1

The question is wether or not ClearChannel is issueing a permanent Ban or a temporary Ban. ClearChannel may be trying to "let America Recover" and then in a week / month allow these songs to be aired again.

I hope ClearChannel makes a statement with its motives clearly defined cause dammit there are some good songs on here. Louis Armstring "What a Wonderful World", how the hell can you sensor that song?? and I cant believe that Alien Ant Farms version of "Smooth Criminal" speaks more to the WTC tragedy than Michael Jacksons , which didnt make the list.

Who ever said that a genius programmer had the knowledge to run a company, and drive a project to completion. I think the one thing these "egos" lack is self control and the understanding that they cant do everything by themselves. Daiktana was a failure mostly because of the lack of management.

The Canadian Version of Internet2 is hardly used at all because our Universities and Private Sector Investors dont have enough projects that require that sort of Bandwidth. I forget the figure, but I believe its the fastest network in North America. Previous Slashdot stories have covered it.

The Development of EPIC (Explicitly Parallel Instruction Code) and Predication Instruction Cacheing are nother BIG improvements over Intels 32-bit architecture. It will be interesting to see how the newer 64-bit applications use these features. My guess is These CPU's will be uber for serveing. This is not an easy process and is time consuming. What if their are fraudulent purchases? Once again it wont be WU on the phone convincing an operator that they didnt purchase a pass to farmsex.com.

Their needs to be some sort of control over these e-commerce buffoons who screw us by running unsecure boxes and poor transaction servers. would a class action lawsuit be an idea? I wonder what the credit card companies are going to do to WU. I mean it is their property WU messed with. If I were MAstercard or VISA I would be laying some heavy restrictions down on WU, the cost to replace cards and cover any illegitamate purchases is reason enough.

I believe the MPAA is making a grave mistake in takning these actions against...? Well Jeez - they havnt even chose a specific opponent except for the hundreds of thousands of people who have or have linked to DeCSS.

The NYTIMES must have received a couple of letters for their linking to DeCSS and 2600 in general. Its going to get quite interesting when this case goes to appeal. I hope the supreme court takes a close look at the bully tactics the MPAA is taking against the internet community. Now they are threating ISP's academic institutions and hosts into enforcing their defunct copyright for them. I dont suggest we call DeCSS a different name - I say we just Link to it more and more - sned emails to the MPAA with the source code atached or in the document - tell them your returning their CSS.

Better yet lets get some SPAM mail floating around, send emails to everyone you know containing the source code for DeCSS, explain to them what the MPAA is doing and have them send it along to some of their friends. I know that sounds sick and pervetted, but distribution and awareness are very important in this case.

Maybe we could put a server on SEALAND (you know about sealand right?) that just stores DeCSS and maybe even the kerbios specification. All I know is that the MPAA needs to know we wont be bullied - Im in Canada so I couldnt give a fuck about any emails they try to send me - Ill call their lawyers and ask if theyd like to extradict me.

If something goes mainstream it becomers generally accepted by the public, and remember that the government is 'for the people' its about time politicians took and active interest in that fact. Can you say 'election year'.

  17. The Ignorance of The Law on Ask The DeCSS Legal Team · · Score: 1

Judge Kaplan, who had previously advised the MPAA, showed a lack of understanding in many fundamental aspects of this case. Of course, the areas I'm refering to are the internet, the open-source movement and the programming community in general.

Do you feel you could have been better understood if the judge had at least a general knowledge of these things before the preceedings occured?

My point is that the laws concerning 'The Internet' and what is inherently right or wrong for its users to do are being determined by an ignorant beuracracy. Cases such as this one will be setting dangerous precedents and laying the ground work for a 'Policed Internet'. I consider this case akin to teaching my 60 year old father how to operate in a Windows environment. Sometimes you cant teach an old dog new tricks, and I think thats what we saw in this trial.

  18. Of Course - it all comes down to $$$ on The Web And The Olympics · · Score: 1

Since the Big Television companies are paying x(milion) amount of dollars to the IOC for the rights to broadcast, why would the IOC then turn around and give other media free coverage.

The IOC is not a commision as much as it is a company trying to make the most money. They think cause I love my country Im going to bend over backwards just to see us beat the US (Im Canadian) in the 100 metre dash again their right, and their going to suck every bit of cash in my pockets and Credit Card (whose the credit card sponsor this year). One only needs to look at what it takes for a city to actually 'get' the Olympics. Back room bargaining and incentives for the representatives. Do you think youll be able to buy a Pepsi at the Olympics? No, because Coke has the rights as an official sponsor to exist as the only soft drink company represented. The IOC no longer cares about sports as much as it does the money.

The IOC exploits nationalism, the same as Microsoft exploits the ignorance of its customer base. In my opinion people will be very pissed that they have to wait x amount of hours to see a report on a specific event. The IOC is stupid for not exploiting the market that the internet offers. My guess is their a bunch of Win9x users who couldnt get their email client to work, so they said fuxx it, we'll stick with TV.

  19. Why 18 = not(SoF) on Slashback: Decisions, Recognizance, Canadianisms · · Score: 4

From my understanding of this topic, all that the BC regulators did was look at the realistic violence portrayed in the game SoF and say

"I dont think kids should be able to purchase this independant of an adult giving them permission."

So what they did was look at how they could legally prevent underage citizens (read: kids) from the purchase and found a Motion Picture rating of 'R' would do the trick.

This is a good thing. Games like SoF should be regulated and kept away from the paws of the "underage". We do the same with graphic movies, and porn, alchohol, driving, smoking, and voting (the most dangerous of all). The restriction now allows parents to have some control over the content that their child is exposed to. If the parents think their child is mature enough and stable enough (read: doesnt fry hamsters in the microwave anymnore) then they can decide to buy it for them.
