There is a lot going on in the background of Java, like the native code, that just support the spec. It's basically like releasing how a library works for a interface. Sun would be opensourcing how they got their interface to work in regards to the specs. It's still different for every version of Java that follows the specs.
Have you seen Java 1.3...Sun's new hotspot VM is much much faster, with smaller memory footprint, and increased startup time. I've seen some benchmarks testing (I wish I had the URL) that shows that it even beats C++ in a couple tests. (they were recursive tests which doesn't say a whole lot)...It's definately a faster Java now.
I think this would give Sun a huge advantage over IBM and Microsoft's version of Java. It would completely blow them out of the water or force them to do the same.
I'm surprised that I haven't seen something like this for the warez and iso scene. Of course with the large file sizes, it's not nearly as effective as napster.
This is the one thing I really hate when you sign up for any service. In the future if at all possible don't give them any information that you don't expect to be shared with the world. I know this isnt possible with some services, but for many it's the only smart thing you can do.
I think it's the fear of getting busted by the government is what keeps most attacks at bay for the gov sites. It still doesn't help our national security.
See that's the thing...Even if your number is hijacked, with AmEx you won't have to pay for it. It's still a pain in the ass going through, but the same thing could happen if you got your wallet stolen...
I feel pretty safe buying online, but the main reason most people don't is because the don't "feel" safe doing it. If they can come up with more ideas like this I think E-Commerce will do even better with the average user.
The only way I see being able to block porn-type sites is blocking certain ones. There is no way of doing it without censoring suitable material. Even if you think you have one, it will only be a matter of time before someone finds a way of getting around it. Blocking sites like http://www.whitehouse.com which kids could goto accidentally would be the best solution. Protect them from accidentally coming onto it. If they want to see porn, most likely what ever you do, they'll find a way of getting to it. The good news is that most kids are too embarrassed to goto a site like that. Either way it's next to impossible to accomplish.
Granted Java has an overhead, but it's getting better and better every release. 1.3 with the new VM, hotspot, is incredibly fast. I wish i still had the url of the benchmarking of it. It beat C++ in speed on a couple of tests, granted they were the recursion which C++ doesn't handle well, but Java is getting much better. C# is going to have to show me something besides the speed factor to get me to switch.
Whoops..your right...I should have previewed twice.

Increased startup time.
The speed might be faster too, but I know time is faster for sure.

Isn't there legitament uses for publishing them. Just to be able to secure your computer?

Does anyone know of a install that can do the whole thing in one swoop like Gnome had? I haven't seen one.
So they put something similar to force feedback into a mouse. Goodidea...It's a good toy but wouldn't it get annoying after awhile
Is there any plug-in for any of the message services that offers encryption?
There only shortcoming is the lack of quantity, which is disappoint...
Can't most computers kick your ass before they start learning in ping pong.
Actually this is pretty impressive.

This will other vendors a chance to come in and hopefully get a bigger piece of the market.
A pentium 4. It's like another rocky movie.... Doesn't marketing do anything at Intel.
I guarantee that they'll make christmas...
Does anyone actually use DivX...I don't want to be flamebait but how much is this acutally used?

For how small the linux base started, it has grown very quickly compared to most operating systems.
All the more reason to support napster and boycott all record labels.
It's a start atleast. In years past we would have never seen anything like this.
