You know, e-ink has improved a lot since the 1st or 2nd generation you saw it. The latest version has "paper" equal in whiteness to the typical cheap paperback or newspaper.
As for LCDs, I can't imagine the UV rays they emit are any good for your eye's lens. Which is why I suspect they'll cause cataracts. (Also read the post below this one.)

The guy's argument is that we should all stop using OS X or Windows. The problem is that I can't run Visio or ModelSim or other worktools on Linux, because they are only available on Windows. Therefore his advice to abandon Windows is an automatic deadend, and as brain-numbingly stupid as the anarcho-capitalist's advice to get rid of government-built roads. (IMHO)

I use default settings too, but not because of "ignorance". (1) I got tired of tinkering with my computer to try different settings. I've been doing it since the 80s and ultimately decided I'd rather DO something useful than just try different windows colors or graphics. (2) Using the default means I can jump from one computer to another without disorientation. They are all near-identical.

I can dismantle your whole pro-Linux argument with one sentence:
- Show me how to run Microsoft Visio on Gnome, KDE, or any other distribution so I can open, edit, and then save *.vsd files on my company's network drive.
I don't use MS-Windows because I like it. Anymore than I drive through interstate jams for fun. I do it because it's the defacto standard that everyone uses. I avoid Microsoft as much as possible but using alternatives (LibreOffice, VLC Player, Winamp, Mozilla seaMonkey, etc). But at the end of the day I still need to use Windows as my base because that's where the office & engineering tools run.

I wish Microsoft was more like that. I'm not sure if tying files to the program makes sense though. What if I decide I don't want my songs/videos tied to Apple's default player, and would rather use an Open program like VLC? Are the files removable from the Apple app to VLC app?
The ISPs stopped providing Usenet..... supposedly to cutoff child porn but now I'm wondering is RIAA was behind the scenes & just using the porn as a false flag to eliminate a piracy vehicle.
I won't flame you, but I disagree that e-ink is bad. I can stare at it for hours without the inevitable eyestrain that comes from looking at a too-bright LCD screen (which I suspect over time will cause cataracts). It more-resembles the paper of an actual book.
As for lighting: Barnes&Noble now has a glow-in-the-dark eink display. I figure it's only a matter of time until Amazon copies them and has their own glowing kindle: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/nook/379003208
>>>There is no reason why any android device cannot get the free books.
Amazon wants you to buy the hardware, so they tie you to the kindle for the freebies. A bit like Apple's model where OS X only works on Macs, not any android or windows device. Ya know you COULD buy a kindle... it's only 50-60 used. (I bought the 3G version for 70 like-new.)
Hard to stream at 50k. (dialup). Plus even if my colleague had highspeed internet, he still has to go out and buy new equipment so he & his wife can see the movie on the TV.
Somebody can't read. I paid just over $100 for a working DVR, and that's exactly what I ended-up with. The second broken DVR went in the garbage truck and taken away.
>>>Did the seller guarantee that it would arrive in working order?
Well duh. The description said it was a used working DVR. Of course its supposed to arrive as advertised (per U.S. and State law). God you're a dense son of a bitch.

YOU were the one who was trying to "optimize" his code for faster speed. And I was explaining how you can do that (eliminate having to use the swapfile by using less memory). With the way you programmers are gobbling-up RAM soon even an 8 gigabyte PC won't be able to run at fullspeed because it will be wasting time thrashing the HDD.
If Netflix dies I guess that's the end of DVD-by-mail. I know at least one person who won't be happy. He rents the DVD and then he & his wife watch the movie or TV show together.
For my computer the biggest obstacle is not the speed of rendering. It's the lack of memory (only 1/2 GB) which causes slow loads off the HDD virtual memory.
If programmers want to improve speed, they should try and follow the Puppy Linux philosophy of fitting everything into RAM so the swapfile does not need to be used. (IMHO)
Oh and I suspect these Windows 8 graphical upgrades will be integrated into Windows 7's Service Pack 2. So if this GIF decompress test was run again on Win7-SP2 it would likely reduce the time from 7 to 5 seconds..... very close to Win8's performance.
>>>Cause otherwise I don't quite understand how claiming to be hotel security causes the door to open.
Because you can't read. If a bad guy wanted in while someone was inside, all he would have to do is knock on the door and say "Hotel security. Open the door, please". I had this happen to me one time except it was a cop. I refused to open the door, so the cop went across the aisle to the neighbor instead (the source of a marijuana smell).
Puppy Linux doesn't. For example instead of double-clicking icons to start a program, you single-click. It took me awhile to adjust but I did learn to like that OS. Being different =/= worse.
Or a fan of the NES which used a second sourced 6502, or Super Nintendo which used the 16 bit version of the 6502 (the 65816). I chose my name because this CPU and its variants is one of the most widely used of all time, across multiple manufacturers and a wide span of years (1976 through 1996).

OS 10.8 is not trying to be a tablet OS like Windows 8. (Interesting that Apple and Microsoft have synced-up with their numbers)
old OS: Win7 and 10.7
new OS: Win8 and 10.8
BTW the review of the review was funny. But this award-nominee was even funnier: http://www.tor.com/stories/2011/04/the-shadow-war-of-the-night-dragons-book-one-the-dead-city-excerpt

Whoop-tee-do. I could do that without having to compete in a reality series. Just send a flowery resume to land the interview.
This would be more impressive if they were placed as Interns *inside* Microsoft, and competing to impress the boss to be hired permanently.

Just because a corporation has people inside of it does not mean that it has rights, anymore than a building filled with people has rights.
