If anyone wanted to run Bleem! on the PS2, I'd have to shake them vigourously for a few minutes. The PS2 already runs legacy PSX games natively.

Or maybe there's some hidden extra feature I've never heard of in Bleem!. Then again maybe not.

It is. The XBox uses this trick to some extent, not the PS2. I should know, I've got a dozen DVDR discs sitting right next to my console (too bad the DVD burner's on RMA right now - piece of shiznit).

  3. Re:Mac OS X may be... on Mac OS X: Game Developer's Playground · · Score: 1

The difference between PC and Mac is like Ford and Toyota.

Toyotas are somewhat 'prettier' according to the general populace, and they might last longer than the other guy. They're also made with the complete idiot in mind; it's a car for everyday people, not just wrench heads.

Fords are more 'core', they don't make their vehicles look like they're smiling. They don't use kids in the TV commercials in a shameless attempt to grab naive young moms. And their cars tend to die a little younger than their asian counterparts if you treat them equally. However their cars are designed with the hobbyist's aftermarket in mind. You can rip out parts and upgrade the engine/tranny if you have the slightest idea where you're going.

That's how I see Mac vs PC. Macs work well, they're nice machines for the common user, and you can't do shit with'em unless Steve Jobs said you could (licensing). Sure, there are a few clever folks who have learned the arcane art of Mac tweaking, but it is grossly undocumented and beyond the reach of 99% of their userbase. I don't see myself desoldering stuff on the mobo just to push a G4 from 500 to 550mhz. Na-uh!

PC's are cobbled together from a bunch of different sources.. board from Asus, cpu from AMD, ram from Micron, etc. You can make a sucky PC, or you can build the '68 Mustang of all boxen. Or what if you've already got a piece of shit ? You can swap things out and make it better at minimal cost. Get that queer TNT2-M64 out of there and throw in a Radeon or Geforce2. Throw in a Globalwin heatsink and clock that mutha' out! Or what if something breaks ? Don't ship your entire box to the manufacturer or store, just throw out the dead part and buy another one, then send it back on RMA and sell it off when it comes back.

The bottom line is that it's still a debate on Quality vs Hackability, with many people on each side. There is little point in battling between these factions, but it is good to remind ourselves the mindset behind each of them, instead of just mindlessly bashing one another.

What might be inaudible to you and many others, is what makes the difference to the remaining golden ears. I despise Kazaa because everyone seems to have only 128kbit rips, and many of them use low-quality encoders such as the Fraunhofer licensed crap that's included in MusicMatch Jukebox.

On the typical Soundblaster-equipped PC this might not be an issue, but burn that MP3 to CD and throw it in a half-decent home or car stereo and you'll hear the difference, especially if you crank it up. "Eww, what's up with the wishy-washy hihats ?"

I rip everything between 192/256 kbps, and it makes a good difference to both my ears and my speakers. Poorly encoded MP3 will try its best to emphasize the mid-range, where vocals and lead melody tend to reside; as a side-effect, it will over-compress sub-bass and quantize the high-end. In layman's terms, the loudness of the subwoofer will drop whenever the mid-range takes over, and the hihats and techno tweaks will sound like muffled FM static.

It's like hearing only the predominant part of the music, when the true pleasure of listening is all about being saturated with subtle highlights that keep your subconscious in the clouds.

Yes, this compiler will probably produce better code than gcc and it will surely be much faster, but remember this is Borland. They're trying to 'Embrace the Linux platform', just like they tried to do with Kylix, and I have yet to see any serious Kylix-made projects in widespread use, probably because of their unfriendly license for free users.

ECS are off to a very impressive start with the K7S5A board. Using the SIS 735 chipset, it is unsurpassed in reliability and offers very decent performance as well. Overclocking isn't its strong point, but at a mere 65$ price tag you can invest the money saved on a faster CPU.

The problem with HP (and most others') desktops is that they throw in a fast CPU, then wrap a bunch of crap around it. Pathetic sound chips, onboard video with flaky drivers, and slow IDE controllers. They often suck more than the 300$ 'budget' shite your inlaws bought at CompuCentre.

Their support is excellent though, with same-or-next day replacement, and I've found that the hardware rarely fails (except a hard drive or two). It's just very flaky by design, so you get frequent hangs and crashes.
