    I would have to say the one that amazed me most was the asparagus battle.

    Take more lobster than you can shake a stick at, crush them (shells and all), lay them in the bottom of a pan, lay down a linen towel, lay 5 pieces of asparagus on that, fold the towel over, and fill the rest of the pan with crushed lobster.

    bake.

    Take it out of the oven, and throw away the lobster!!!

    All that just to flavor the asparagus with lobster. Now *that* is insane.

    God I love this show. :)

    I'm sorry, perhaps I sounded more inflammatory than I meant to. I wasn't aware of a POP alternative; I'm still learning the security part of administration, and while everyone and their mother tells you "don't run telnet", I've had a hell of a time finding anything decent about securing mail services, other than "just wrap it with SSL, it's the wonder cure!"

    Try a search for "secure IMAP" on google and then try acting suprised at my response. :(

    I can think of a number of reasons people like POP more than IMAP, but I can't imagine security is one of them. They BOTH send passwords in cleartext, unless wrapped in SSL or somesuch. POP and IMAP both suck in that sense, in the same way, every day.

    Huh? I've got Mandrake 7.2 and RH 6.2 systems that run just fine with the 2.4.0 kernel. I didn't have to upgrade anything on Mandrake, and RH only needed a new modutils (which I got by pulling the modutils-2.4.1 source RPM from mandrake's cooker and rebuilding).

    It took almost no time to upgrade either, and they work fine.

    Try learning how the DNS/registrar system works first.

    Yeah, I "cracked" Ranger Rick magazine because my nickname is Ranger Rick! Whoa! You "cracked" Huffy because your name is the same as a bicycle spoke! Or perhaps you "cracked" the english language!

    Having a silly hostname for your DNS so it shows up in the internic host records is not a crack, it's not even a hack. It's just a silly prank. It's funny, but people blow it way out of proportion.

    And there's no such thing as a Pocket PC dual booting (yet).

    Depends, the Casio linux port has a boot loader that lets you load from a flash card... they don't have it for the iPAQ yet, although someone's working on it.

    But seriously, this whole idea is ridiculous. There is *no* reason they should need to "wire-tap" e-mail when there are other legal ways to get information from "suspected criminals". And saying that encryption is a sign of criminal activity is like arresting people who buy ski masks. Preposterous. Maybe we do need a Slashdot PAC.

    As we java developers say: program to the interface. You can't do that in perl.

    Huh? Then what the heck is CPAN? A big archive of interfaces, with documentation and conventions startlingly similar to javadoc.

    Properly-written perl modules work exactly like properly-written classes, with the exception of not enforcing types, for obvious reasons. Oh, and not having to type 80 characters to get to your function. ;)

    Ahh, so idiot programmers are perl's fault. I see.

    All of your arguments seem to be against any large-scale coding project. Improper interface documentation and infrequent or non-existant code reviews will screw you up regardless of the programming language used. It seems like you've been screwed by some idiot programmer in the past. If this perl programmer is screwing up your project, you should be talking to your manager, plain and simple.

    What annoyed me was that in the book, anyone with any kind of training (Bene Gesserit, Fremen, etc.) was in much more control of themselves than they were in this miniseries.

    Bene Gesserit's were supposed to have complete control over every muscle of their body, over every nuance of facial movement and expression. So why is Jessica always a simpering whiner in this one? Who has emotional outbreaks throughout the movie?

    I think that the standard packaging system should use the source code -- because it's much more portable.

    rpm --rebuild something-0.0-1.src.rpm

    All the compatibility of source tarball, all the convenience of integration with the package database.
