Of course, if we're lucky, maybe it'll go the way of OS/2. Everyone said (well, not *everyone*) OS/2 died because no one wrote native apps when you could just run the Windows 3.1 version on it. So why write NT apps when you can write apps for *NIX/Linux and it works on both!

I don't know if I really want people who don't care enough to make the effort of registering to be voting in the first place. If anything, maybe registering should be harder. Voter turnout doesn't necessarily mean good voters.

It's already pretty easy to register, all you have to do is go down to the local DMV and fill out a form (remember the hoopla about the "motor voter bill" not too long ago?). If that's too much trouble, how can we expect people to make an informed decision on who should be president?

Now, my idea of an "informed decision" may be different than someone else's, but it seems to me our biggest problem is that no one really looks into the candidates they're voting for. They just watch the sugar-coated TV coverage, where everyone spouts off their "platform", but the truth is in what they did before.

Most people that are running for office tend to have been in some kind of political office before. It's not too difficult to see what bills they put their name on.

Basically, it comes down to: Postgres is much more complete (it has more of the SQL spec implemented -- transactions, etc.). MySQL is much faster. It all comes down to how you expect to use it. If you are going to be doing complex joins and transactions and such, MySQL probably won't cut it (yet), otherwise, MySQL (most definitely!) makes up in speed what it lacks in features.

There's obviously more to it than that, but I'm not aware of any specific comparisons...

...except for one thing: ports! The ports collection has to be one of the coolest things I've ever seen. It has all the advantages of control by compiling yourself, slackware-style, but still allowing package management and dependencies. I love just going into the tree and typing "make" when I want to install something.

I'm seriously tempted to make a Linux distribution based around ports, don't know if I have the stick-to-it-iveness to do it, but it definitely would be cool. Hrmm....

Really, I see no reason why I should do things the hard way just to prove myself. Perl can be impossible to read -- *IF* the person writing it doesn't know how. It can also be very clear and easy to follow.

The difference is, Creative (assumedly) *agreed* to the NDA in the first place. They long ago decided to follow those rules, however faulty anyone may think they are.

We have yet to see whether there is any proof to 3Dfx's statement; judging by their previous litigation, I'm inclined to believe there isn't. That doesn't change the fact that 3Dfx wants their code proprietary, and Creative agreed with it so they could sell 3Dfx cards.

I'd been waiting to get the Voodoo 3 3500 (mpeg-2, video in and out), but the more I watch 3Dfx, the more it seems like they're on their way down, as another poster commented. Their reputation will carry them for a while, but if they keep this up, it won't carry them forever.

Of course, Newtek told us that they're open-sourcing the flyer software (cool!). The thing is, they've got a new PC capture card/software combo. It isn't a toaster yet, but the guy we talked to (the east coast sales rep) called Amiga a "dead, well... comatose" platform, and then all but said their new hardware is going to be the toaster for PC.
