Then Google for info. "The family of a slain motorist has filed suit against the maker of a video game that two teens claim inspired them to shoot at passing cars on a Tennessee highway." That's one of many links. Point is, there is no reference to the parents of the shooters suing anyone, or parents absolving themselves of responsibility by casting blame elsewhere, which seems to be what most of the discussion here is accusing them of.
Amazing... the threads here could be material for a study of how few/. posters bother to even read the article before posting their insights based on an emotional reaction to the article summary. Clue coming:
The submitter summarized it wrong. "Apparently, Take-Two Interactive is being sued by the parents of two kids who killed a man." Yeah, apparently... apparently (no, obviously) wrong. Article states that family members of the murdered man and the injured woman are suing the shooters.
Firstly, the study methodology doesn't even address if developing on Linux or Windows is cheaper -- it addresses the costs of developing a J2EE app on Linux vs a.Net app on Windows. It then weights against Linux heavily by assuming the Linux development would use BEA and Oracle (well-known for their high price), whereas Windows has lower-cost alternatives. Therefore, the study boils down to "BEA and Oracle cost more than Windows solutions". Nothing like a smack in your opponent's knee with a steel bar to make you come out the winner!
Er, the dopy kids who originally uploaded the video to KaZaa aren't "professional videographers," so why would they have the kid sign a "release?"
Er, so they couldn't get sued. Not that they would have even thought of that, but then, people get themselves into legal trouble unknowingly all the time. So what is it with people who lump all Slashdot posters together with having one opinion, and also assume that someone who brings up a point to ponder is actually advocating something?
Yes, the lawsuit by the kid's parents made me roll my eyes at first, but you know what? (quick IANAL here) - there's such things as photo releases, and the parents may have grounds for action here. I was at a festival where a photographer took a pic of my kid and then approached me to sign a release in case they wanted to put the photo on their website. If you aren't a public figure, you can take legal action if a photo of you is published without your consent (and in the case of minors, a parent's consent). Especially if the photo is embarrassing, or someone is profitting of the use of your picture. Makes me wonder about the validity of those porn sites whose angle is "we fooled these girls to have sex then put the pics on the Internet against their wishes."
and it's "role" model, not "roll" model, unless he was thinking of a roll in the hay with Britney;) But a very good letter and more people should follow this example.
So was SCO within their rights to modify work they did not create and incorporate it into their "property"? And why the heck didn't they just crop the hat out, instead of botching the photo? (the boy with green hair...and looks like a bike - seatpost and saddle - is hanging between camera and guy. Or perhaps Darl's axe.)
Why? Why not envision the US Government intervening to uphold IBM's rights? You can claim the Govt is in the pockets of big business, but you're forgetting that SCO isn't the only big business (and not even the biggest business) in this fight.
I have that book, in fact, it's what got me started on Linux. It had CDs for RedHat, Caldera Lite, and Slackware. I wasn't impressed with Caldera, though. I stuck with RedHat through 7 dot something, then Mandrake till 8.2, and now I'm back to Slackware!
man, I've been around/. awhile, but I must have missed the penis bird man. I must say, I'm glad I don't have to wade through tons of hot grits anymore, though.
No one claimed not wrong doesn't make it right; the claim is 'two wrongs don't make a right'.
Your logic (not something is the same as twice something?) obviously carries over into your sig.
So you basically are saying that only the lower classes are violent people, that violence is a class attribute? And their economic/class status mitigates the violence? (I can hear the assailant now -- "Help! Help! I'm being cracked down on" (oppressed))
And poster meant physical violence against a person, not a car window.
I wasn't specifically equating downloading copyrighted material to theft of material items from stores (such as food). More than enough people have drawn the distinction between taking something away that deprives the owner of it, and duplicating something, which doesn't deprive the owner of it. I was, however, querying the original poster's attitude of "I don't like your behavior | prices | policies, therefore I'm taking what you owe me anyway". If a troll, that was the bait that pulled me in.
Downloading songs and movies off the p2p networks is not an excercise in cival disobedience, it's getting back what's owed to you.
Please explain how you, personally, are owed movies and music by anyone, whether a person, an organization, or a "mega corporation". Is it because you feel you have been paying too much for music? Or because the majority of radio play is drivel, so because you've 'suffered', you are owed better music for free?
If groceries cost too much (in your estimation) in your area, do you swipe things from the shelves because those food megacorpora-conglomara-WTO-lovin' evildoers "owe" it to you because of their inherit badness? Hmmm.
Aren't the popup menus on XFCE's panel similar to Gnome's panel drawers? I never cared much for Gnome's drawers, but FWIC, you click an icon on the panel, it expands to show several launchers. XFCE has that.
Make that lumpy potatoes. Harleys have timing?

You mean there was a time when Garfield was actually good?

Further research showed that the "infrasound" was actually a barely-audible Skinny Puppy CD playing in so-called haunted houses.

Well, I dunno, someone told me the word "gullible" was removed from the dictionary, and I reached for my Webster's...
To appear in Espisode 3 would overwhelm any potential proceeds from his lawsuit.

Ever heard of "Unsafe at Any Speed"? Pretty damning choice of words, huh? GM sure didn't slow down Nader's career with any libel suits.
A call to stifle journalistic speech gets modded insightful?
Couldn't you wait until the daily SCO story and post your question there?
US Department of Agriculture FY2003 spending (all, not just food stamps or assistance programs): $72.8 billion
US Dept of Agriculture has a FY2004 budget of $42.9 billion for domestic food assistance programs
So, you were saying that the military is a welfare program for the poor?

No, that was Asimov's little-known collection of sci-fi erotica.
Ok, karma dive.

Can't figure out straight lines in Gimp? Sounds like you need Wilbur-Helper!
