If you build a WAP with Linux, Build 5, alter the code and build a network of wireless access points. Each access point should have 2 cards, possibly 802.11a for the uplink and 802.11b as the downlink. This can be accomplished. Say for instance you build a star shaped network and "home" is in the center and the host you need to reach is 5 miles to the east, your routing table would have rules on each WAP that will relay your IP traffic the the proper destination.
Be carefull. The RIAA is nailing Kazaa users! Limewire does some encryption, but I'd need to run a sniffer on my network at home to see how safe it is.
I've got an IPOD. And I backup my tunes to my server. Sure if you mount the IPOd you don't see the directory. But if your a unix weenie like me you will also know that a file starting with a . is invisable without the.A option!!!! So I have a script that copies all my MPEG files to the local disk. Sure... let ITUNES nuke me. I've got backup. A good portion of my collection is my own CDS collection and I ripped the mp3s at 320k. Does Apple actually think the tunes are just for my IPOD? I use the Tunes one my Nero-35 as well. I've got a Nero-35 in my Stereo rack and the IPOD is for my truck. Also... you are better off converting the Itunes mpeg4 format to mpeg3, and you can do that with Linux and OS/X utilities.
How about the ISPs registering as a CLAC so they can have access to the poles and run thier own copper cable? Or maybe sell WiFi wireless access? Good luck, I hope they kick SBC's ass!
Killing yourself isn't the answer. You can start your own company. In '88 when the firest depression hit I was working as an Electronic Engineer, I got laid off. I started my own consulting company, I ran the company until '94 when I was made an offfer. I sold my company, worked for a consulting company for about a year, worked as a Systems Admin at Brown University for 1 1/2 years and then I jumped to my present position as a consultant for several State Agencies making decent pay. Now... there's less off a demand for H9's in governement because of security. You don't want anyone with just green cards working on classified programs.
My response to you is look at governement work on the state and federal levels. maybe you will find something.
And you don't want to off yourself if you loose your job. Nothing is worth that.
In this day and age when security is paramount I find it ironic that companies farm out work to H1Bs.
Backdoors can easily be buried into code. So.. If Fidelity Investments, Oracle, or whatever other company gets hosed by a backdoor then they deserve it.
I vereed off programming when I realized that you can get paid more as a Unix / Network systems consultant. The key is in CONSULTING since you earn more, keep your certifications up to date, and you don't have to sit in a chair all day.

Comcast Sucks! This is why we need more competition for high speed internet access. I don't have access to DSL, and T1 is too expensive. The upload cap is brutal, so gaming is possible if you wish to play with a handicap!
Dump Windows. It's very simple to create a GUI app with GLADE on Linux. It could be a C, C++, Perl, or python app. No need to spend big bucks on development tools.
And, I'm 40 now. This is just like the good old days when we wrote our own code and belonged to SIG groups. Yes I was 15 when I started coding. I cut my teeth on a Timex Sinclair and an Atari 400. Not to mention my Sym-1 that I programmed entirely in assembly language.
The Internet and news groups bring together the SIG type of group I used to learn. I dialed up the SIG on a 2400 boaud modem and poked around the message boards. Now we hit the internet.
Well, we are talking kids. And I have kids. My youngest is twelve. What I do is create an inclusive email filter. It's just the opposite of Sendmail's SPAM filter. My kids need to submit the email address of tose they want to recieve email. Everthing else gets rejected or directed to me so I can go after the Spammers.
Dude.. you are wrong. When I went to write/debug code on site at Coproven Venezuala in 1986 I was shocked to see what people pay at McDonalds. At the time the money conversion rate was 50bisces/$1.00 All McDonalds crappy food was at American Prices! So only the wealthy could afford to eat there.
The local Engineer friends I made there took me to local restraunts. I enjoyed many bottle of Polar Cerveca (Beer!) And they wanted to see if they could bust me by substituting my Polar that I gre pretty fond of.. I caught them (I was drinking from a frosted mug at the time (Where my Polar?)... they laughed and got me a new mug full of Polar. You can't buy Polar in the United States, I think because it exceeds the alchol content that our beer has. I thought I was a lightweight since I after 8 24oz glasses of Polar I knew I had to slow down the beer consumption... well... they told me 8 240z = 16 24oz of any American or imported American beer.
Anyway I got to go to local restraunts in Caracas. I was very surprised that I can get a meal that would cost $50.00 here for $6.00
The company I worked for at the time was calling me Indiana Jerry since there were revolting in the streets because gasoline went up 5 bisces. but 5 bisces is a lot of money for a Venezualean. Engineers back then only made $450.00 bisces / month.
I got to enjoy a venezualan keg part that featured my favorite South American Beer! The party as at Mercado (at the base of the Rancheros where American Tourists can get abducted or shot) But since I was trying to speak thier toungue and my Venezualan Engineer friends said they would take care of me I went. Thier friends were impressed that I was at least tryinh to speak their language and that they actually understood me. They get paid the third thursday of the month.. and man thay weekend is one long party for most people.
The cost of living was pretty steep at the time I went to Venezala... Actually the way it panned out it was 25% higher than in Swansea, MA USA. then.
Rent was high, if they wanted to plant a garden and grow thier own food they had to pay rent too. But they were forunate. All the truck Drivers, Mechanics, laborers.. they could not afford rent they live in the Ranchero Mountains in goverment provided clay huts with one free light bulb.
Only 13% of the population there live as we or Europeans do. It's strange because Venezuala has an abundance of natural resources. Not only natural agas and Oil. When the coworkers I befriended took me to a beach you could see gold in the hills! I actually scraped some off a rock into a piece of paper... it wasn't Mica or Fool's Gold.. it was real Gold. And you see that throughout the Ranchero's. Also diamonds.. big time. Even Black ones.
Anyway.. as for my Engineer friends.. Most of them made a little over $400/month in 1986
Some of them worked 6months out of the year in the US for IBM.
P.S. I was swimming at the beach during August (thier winter) and it felt like bath water.. but my friends lips were turning blue.. I can just imagine how warm that water gets in the summer)
I'm very surprised that the United States continues to outsource. Especially after 9/11. it will be pretty easy for anyone to bury a "back door" into the code they are contracted to write.
Lot's of features get lost in the language translation and coded ends up getting rewritten. If I was a CEO of one of the large companies mentioned I would rethink my outsourcing.
I'm all for open source, but when it comes time to develop applications for Government agencies.. we should employ American Citizens.
I don't want to stifle innovation, but I am too addicted to my IPOD. I've got my entire CD collection in here, downloaded a few almums from Apples's store, converted to mp3 because aac won't play on my other player... but man I've got over 1003 songs on it now. I have the same playability as the pogo product since If I really want to I can just record radio from my wintv Theatre card, save to in mp3 format and copy it to my IPOD.
MythTV rocks. For those of you that don't get it, youc an watch what you want, when you want, without commercial interruptions. I am working on code that will dump a show to DVD or SVCD.
I recorded the SciFi channels Startrek Marathon that was broadcasted on Memorial Day. Hopefully I'll start collect episodes of the Simpsons and Futurama. with all the damn reality shows on I'd rather watch my collection when I watch TV.
And for those of us that program into the night on Open Source projects it is nice to kick back when you are done at 3:30AM and watch someting decent instead of a Infomercial.

Convert your ITUNES to MP3. My IPOD plays mp3 just fine! And backup your IPOD! NO DRM is needed to play mp3 tunes!
