if these guys find irregularities you know people will blow it sky high and make a huge stink.

That is a good thing. It will be a deterrant against those who wish to repeat and/or expand on some of the dirty tricks from the last election.

"Irregularites," are not normal or acceptable when they involve someone trying to prevent a legal voter or having his/her vote counted.

  2. Correct, unfortunately on Presidential Debates Set · · Score: 1

You're exactly right--I should have clarified that the candidates as yet are not paying attention to Citizens' Debate Commission.

One reason they don't like the CDB is the CDB wants to sometimes give third party candidates a shot. If a candidate is polling at 5% or higher, or if 50% of people think the candidate should be included in debates, then the CDB would include them.

I read the Rules of Agreement between the Pubs and Dems, and very early on is an agreement to exclusivity--that neither candidate will appear in any real forum to debate another candidate. Nor may either candidate challenge the other to another debate.

And control has a lot to do with it. When they do the town meeting debate, all invited "citizens" must submit their questions to the moderator days in advance, who will hand-pick which ones to use. If the person changes the question, the moderator will immediately turn off the person's microphone. They will also turn off the person's microphone to prevent any follow-up comments or questions from the person.

The podiums will be exactly 48 inches high, exactly ten feet apart as measured from the middle of the left-right span, etc. The parties will review and approve all camera positions in advance, and no audience members may be shown during the debate except the person asking a question in the town meeting one. Also, there will be no picture-in-picture shots of the other candidate while one candidate is answering a question.

Sounds about as interesting as spending the evening in a secluded hospital room--sanitized, with nothing to engage the mind.

A very good idea, no matter which side of the fence you're on. Debates have gotten so stale, even the most stalwart arm chair politicians have a hard time swallowing them. The 2000 Bush-Gore debates were just awful because of their predictability and the absense of real political discourse.

Citizen's Debate Commission is made of people all over the spectrum who want to bring back real debates, where the candidates answer actual unscreened questions from actual human beings. Count me in.

The mainstream media is owned by huge big corporations who tend to like the Republican way of doing things. Their reporting is certainly not left-biased. Look at the mess we got into with Iraq.

Bush's evidence was flimsy as hell, but the media just jumped on the bandwagon without making much noise at all. For every example of the media seeming liberal that Hannidy and Rush can come up with, you'll find three examples that show just the opposite. Of course, Hannity/Rush are smart enough not to mention these, as it would cause you to question their omniscience.

    1) Network speed/reliability. Sometimes, I'll click on a link and stare at that animation in the top-right corner for something like 30 seconds with no results. If I click stop, then refresh, often the page comes up immediately. How about some smarter algorithms for getting the data to me faster and more reliably without so much intervention?
    2) Sometimes I'll be using an ASP-style web site, where clicking a control might change only one thing on the page. It would be nice if I didn't have to scroll all the way back down to where I was. How about detecting if the new page is similar enough to the old one, and if so, scrolling the window to the same position?
    3) Security lockdown. Watch for suspicious behavior (dangerous scripts, multiple pop-ups, repetetive question boxes, trying to use known browser exploits) on the part of a web site. When these things happen, lock down security on that site.
    4) Kid detection. Based on biometrics or usage patterns, figure out if your 7-year-old is using the computer. If so, turn on the Net Nanny software.
    5) Maybe too far off-topic, but software that will watch your 7-year-old's chats for signs of the other person being an adult stalker.
    6) Watch for information your 7-year-old shouldn't be telling others, such as his phone number, full name, etc.
    7) Watch for the usage patterns of a clueless newby. When this happens, offer to help the user learn more about using a browser.
    8) Cat detection. When the cat is walking on the keyboard, keep him from deleting all your files.
    9) Biometric music selection. Watch usage patterns and biometrics and select/suggest appropriate music from the user's play list based on past choices.
