    Actually if Novell gets what they want SCO may not last two MONTHS and that's the problem here, they are always just barely dodging bullets.

    Issues of right and wrong aside I'd run like hell to the competition if I were running their software.

    You will get a system with no networking or GUI and all your drives will be read only and a single root prompt (provided you told it you wanted one).

    I think it's a difference in methodology.
    comScore monitors the web browsing habbits of people who agree to let them. Websidestory monitors websites along with browser stats etc they check referrers.

    It's quite possible they are both right. Google may be getting less actual traffic than before but is passing more of the people through to other sites.

    What agency? I'd love to turn EI in for their OS check's reply of "We only support windows and MacOS" .

    I had to use the useragent spoof plugin just to file my EI papers.

    Strangely enough I've been online during a power out. ADSL + a cheap UPS left me online for 20 minutes after the power died.

    Would have been easier if it hadn't been night and pitched black but thankfully I can touch type.

    If it really matters theres UPS and generators.. Up here for a few thousand you can get a very affordable propane or nautral gas backup home generator that gets wired into your home and kicks in when your main power goes down.

    I actually got banned from two of my HS computer labs for "hacking" It seems some crappy reseller who can't even be bothered to have a website. sold the school a bunch of substandard crap that just wouldn't keep it's BIOS settings.

    As the most tech savy student in the school at the time the blame fell on me for removing the CMOS passwords.

    I tried to explain that it was a hardware problem but they blamed me anyways.

    I run flashblock and whitelist the sites I want flash content on. After that I only block ads that are overly annoying or consistantly slow down browsing. I don't mind ads either. I've bought things from advertisers. I just hate being overly annoyed.

    I have an account I keep *just* for online payment sustems to keep them from draining it. I can transfer between my accounts but if paypal tries to get money I don't want it to have then it will just bounce.

    My BMO rep gave me a funny look when I asked for a label of EFT.

    Only payment system I trust right now is Neteller

    Worse than tech support jokes are mindless webcomic gags like characters pointing out holes in the plot, talking to the narrator, making fun of the artist that each one seems to try thinking the readers think it will be funny.

    The strangest thing is that if you ever see someone point it out then they retort that they are doing it for art's sake and it's not like you are paying for it. (although in a couple of cases the complainer was paying for it).

    I tend not to complain and just delete my bookmark for the comic instead.

    I think somewhat worse than the lack of money is keenspot's instabillity.

    I actually got an autographed picture of Schlock with my keenspot subscription but after having the system go down and loose my settings every other week I didn't bother to renew.

    I too have found endian specific bugs in code I maintain. It's why I keep an Ultrasparc III in my closet for compile testing.

    I can easilly port between Linux and *BSD but the problem comes when users ask me to port my code to non Posix OS or claim to be Posix but really aren't Posix(win32). Or my latest peeve: sort of Posix but non ELF non GNU (OS X).

    I disagree.. a lot of software that I've payed for has been unpolished incomplete crap so this is in no way confined to the open source world.

    Some people are lazy whether they are payed or not.

    This is a good start.. then all we need is a phone like this and one with a bluetooth adaptor.

    Then it could be pluggable.. wireless headset? yep.. want to make a data connection? whip out your PDA or laptop.

    For me the ideal phone would just make calls on it's own and have the ability to route other kinds of traffic.

    I'm tired of paying extra to have a second rate PDA, a third rate camera etc all built into my phone since I tend to have all those things anyways. It all just adds an annoying level of complexity.

    ... transformers can eat the broadband traffic at points between the power plant and its final destination. Now that we know the signal has to carried by other means in order to get it into the neighborhoods being served, a large chunk of the original cost savings have disappeared...

    I'll say.. I don't know about down there, but up here(I'm in Canada) Rural areas often have 1 transformer for a group of 4 houses and if they are even more remote 1 transformer per house!
    It's not a last mile problem .. it's a last 20 feet problem and those tend to be overhead wires anyways so theres no digging involved. I'm betting just giving up and going fiber to the home wouldn't be much more expensive.

    Actually Linus didn't actually trademark the name. It was given to him in a settlement with someone who trademarked it and tried to hold the entire community hostage back in 1997.

    SCO wasn't the first company to make money at the expense of the Linux community.

    TCP Benchmarks are almost done this way. They have a price/performance metric. Unfortunatly the vendors all use discounts on the hardware used for the test that are near impossible for anyone else to get.

    Make a new rule to level the playing field and they will find a new way to cheat.

    "I think SCO must be too buy looking over their mountain of discovery proceeds to add a simple attribution to their legal docs website." AFIK one of the court orders states that SCO may not look at any of the code IBM supplies, they need to hire an outside expert to do it.

    That's by Maureen O'Gara. You should never post anything by her as fact.

    She often gets a lot of the facts wrong and in this case the only thing we know for certain is that there has been a death. Maureen is the only one calling it a suicide and everyone has reported that the Noorda family is not releasing any details.

    It may be a suicide or it may not be and we won't know for certain until a real journalist supplies more information.

    Indeed.. I zoomed in on my office in St-Laurent and quickly got accurate (better than Mapquest) directions to my apartment. I also had it give me directions to my parents' house in Chilliwack BC with no problem.

    If your going to bash Canada at least be well informed. The hate crime legislation only affects religions if they actively promote violance against identifiable groups; if it were otherwise it would be thrown out by the courts for violating our right to religious expression as defined in our constitution. The only times I recall it ever being used against a member of any religion was either neo Nazi's pretending to be Christians or more recently a Moslem cleric who was caught on tape preaching that all Jews should be killed (radio interview no less).

    I would also rather sit in silence.. I find that when I'm dealing with a problem serious enough for me to actually call tech support I'm irritated enough that cheery/relaxing music actually makes me want to start punching things. The only thing worse than cheery music is ads about how you could be using some nifty new automated feature instead of calling.
