  1. This is repugnant. on Best Live Linux For Christmas Giving? · · Score: 3, Insightful

What kind of inconsiderate asshole gives Linux as a *Christmas present* to his non-geek friends and family? This is the worst kind of gift-giving - the kind given for the benefit of the person giving it rather than the pleasure of the recipient. I'm vaguely reminded of the episode of The Simpsons where Homer buys Marge a bowling ball for her birthday.

Christ, what a bunch of cocks.

Thief, sure...but Half-Life was *extremely* technically impressive when it was new. I don't know any gamer who didn't need to pick his jaw up off the floor after going through the opening train ride at the beginning of the game.

HL was an excellent example of how good graphics and sound and fun gameplay aren't mutually exclusive.

Though it *did* come out a couple of years late, didn't it? I remember cries of "vapourware" in the final months before its release..hmm.

It was part of an audio CD I remember reading about on Blue's a couple of years ago, some band did *all* the Doom music tracks. Unfortunately I can't find it anywhere now, not even on the CDDB, which only has entries for recordings of the actual MIDI tracks.

    > First, I dont think its a shame that they can't upgrade their machines in 3 years. I think its a shame that they have machines that can perform 33 million instructions per second and that this insn't enough to browse the web with modern software. MIPS != MHz. For example, a 486dx2-50 will only execute about 6 million instructions per second. On the other hand, MIPS are, as the Jargon File puts it, a "Meaningless Indication of Processor Speed", because some instructions take less clock ticks to perform than others.

  24. Re:Buy Matrox or ATI Instead on Ask NVIDIA Interview · · Score: 1

But they're *not* in the same league in terms of price. Your case is the exception, not the rule, and frankly I'm still wondering whether or not to believe you got a very expensive card for $50 more than the price of a very cheap card. Go check out some hardware vendors prices on the Radeon and a GeForce2 MX and compare them.

  25. Re:Buy Matrox or ATI Instead on Ask NVIDIA Interview · · Score: 1

Then you either got a really, really fucking cheap Radeon, or you ridiculously overpaid for your MX. The card from nVidia in the same league as your Radeon is the full GeForce2 GTS, of which the MX is a crippled, cheap version. Comparing performance to your Radeon is completely unfair.
