    Frankly, I'm surprised that it's only 25%. I've had colleagues who have taped over the exhaust ports on their laptops to cause overheating issues.

    They DID build a tall wall around it. Fukushima had a 5 meter sea wall. Unfortunately, the tsunami was 14 - 15 meters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ3IgHQuCBM). The problem here is that you can't predict everything with 100% accuracy. They did a risk assessment and determined that a 5 meter sea wall would have a high probability of protecting the plant from any foreseeable weather or wave action. Obviously, in hindsight, that determination was incorrect. You can't build everything to have 100% protection from any possible scenario, it would just be impossible. You have to make an assessment of the risk and if something completely outside the bounds of what was probable happens, you need to learn from that experience and avoid making the same mistake twice.

    You're exactly right. There was opposition to the Bill of Rights for exactly that reason, as the founding fathers were afraid that if they enumerated the rights, people would believe that these were the only rights they had, rather than viewing the Bill of Rights as a specific restriction on government activities. That's why they added the Ninth Amendment. "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." Of course, it seems that the ninth and the tenth amendments don't really apply in modern day America.

    I am beginning to think that my fellow Americans are afraid of success. We claim we want energy independence, but do very little to achieve it, despite valid and workable options staring us in the face. New reactors are precisely what we need in this situation (with more modern safety features compared to the reactors in Japan as well as decreasing our reliance on foreign energy).

    Everything I've ever known about Germans has indicated that they're typically methodical and efficient, thus I'd be very surprised if they didn't pore over numbers before going through with it. Being a T-Mobile customer, I'm not happy about the deal, but I wouldn't immediately point the finger at German irrationality.

    If the bank is having a run on their funds, they approach the emergency lending window at the Fed, who floats them a loan to make sure that the bank stays liquid. The FDIC provides the insurance on the money in case of a bank failure, which also helps assuage public confidence in the banking system.

    When did freedom of religion become freedom from rule of law? As an incredibly disenfranchised Catholic, I am disgusted by some of the things that my church has done and failed to do. Where are the criminal charges related to the many abuses that people (especially children) have suffered at the hands of the Catholic Church? I ask the same question about Scientology. I am not trying to troll, I'm just trying to understand.

    I have a better solution. No public outlets. Sure, they can have all the free wi-fi they want, but they don't get free power. That would eliminate those people who monopolize chairs and tables through working there all day. An hour or two is a little much, but I like to think that it's a much more elegant solution than playing with Wi-Fi settings and having people complain.

    Phil was murdered by his wife, not a crazy stalker ex-wife. Granted, she was crazy and on drugs, but she was his wife.
