"That is funny but their are good reasons. One do you have cheap Hydro power in Duluth? Fiber?"
Cheap land? Check. Cold frigid body of water? Check Cheaper workers? Check Lower taxes? Check
The cost of land compared to California? Priceless!
I got into a debate 2 years ago when someone said you must be in the bay area if you are a young I.T. startup! I called that out as Bullshit! Unless you already have tens of millions of dollars sitting in your bank account. Texas is a much better deal. Those who hated Texas felt free to correct me but I gave a business reason. How much would an ok average software engineer cost in Austin? $55,000 a year. San Francisco? $90,000 a year. Rent for a tiny 15 person team in Austin? $80,000 a year. San Francisco $1,000,000! Taxes in California? 10%! Taxes about 2.5% etc.
See where I am coming from? It is stupid to start a business in the bay area. Synergy my ass. There is nothing magical about the bay area where you magically will have customers pay you money to offset the costs. Too many programmers for too little talent that can leave you in a heartbeat where my costs are 300% just to appear cool. It is a business my friend and I am just here to make money. Stop imitating others and start being different to get ahead.
Walmart beat all the nickel and dime stores like Woolsworth in NYC when they are in rural Arkansas to cut costs. When you have a shoe string budget starting out and your new investors want a profit by the end of the month Minnesota or Alaska sound like a much better option. When you talk to a financial guru they always advise to spec out your costs and triple them and then when you are done double them.
Of course not everyone has needs where the distance in the speed of light in just a few hundred yards in.00001 of a second means trillions of lost dollars stealing from the backs of hard working savers in manipulating the stock prices in buying and selling the same share at the same time to rip them off.
I would consider that a niche scenario where the backers of this own 90% of all the money anyway and don't mind the energy cost in terms of what they can manipulate back.
A lot of these folks assume you are living on welfare and are fat with food stamps paying for steaks and caviar every night, and are rich sitting on the couch watching TV with the welfare/social security entitlements, with your free government IPhone posting on slashdot if you are more liberal minded and do not agree.
After all it is on Hannity and Rush and FoxNews so it must be true! If you whine you must not have a job otherwise you think just like them
Countering Mir, Canada has a much better financial discipline than the Yankees do. The US is about to head the way of Greece. Not from a radical socialist black muslim president, but Canada makes sure its taxes are appropriate for its level of funding. In the US... NO NO MORE TAXES!! So they borrow instead and laugh at Greece while the US has the same symptoms but without the same spending.
Actually student achievement is much higher now than back then.
With No Child Left Behind enacted the average student is now 2 grade levels higher with reading, writing, and math. Still behind the other countries of course, but is a big improvement
Yikes that is a little too personal if you ask me? Especially for a candid discussion vs a flamewar aguement.
I have to say people are stupid and do dumb things that keep them poor. On the otherhand the hardest working people I know are the poorest. They work 2 or 3 jobs, have health problems, get treated like crap on the job, and just break even bill to bill. Meanwhile bankers and CEOs eat 2 hour lunches at the finest restuaraunts for free and play golf on the job and make 1,000 as much. Life buddy is sure not fair.
Many of the ones conservatives like to blame as irresponsible are being responsible by working so much and paying each bill that they can't go to school to better themselves when you have 2 7 hour shifts in a 14 hour day earning $45 a day after taxes for each one? Or they try to do the right thing by working one job and going to school and then get ostracized for being irresponsible for taking in all these students.
You can't win once you have been screwed over. As I stated in another comment. Unless you have that magical piece of paper you can't get promoted. Sure you can always work harder but not everyone had the opportunity you had to go school and get the financing and room and board and then do the internships and network and so on which lead to your success today.
I have been in poverty and I am working my way out and things are looking up for me workwise more this year than any other! But I am lucky. Not everyone is camping at Wall Street. Many are working at Target to get paid for crap wages hoping at least that reference will help them when they can hit it big later. If you went to college in the 1990s and started your career in 1999 then you are alouf and do not live in the same world poor young people do today!
If you could spell HTML in 1999 and have a degree in English employers would throw money at your and beg you to work. Tuition could be paid by working 1 job part time. That is not true anymore. It costs as much as a medical doctors degree for that bachelors degree just to beg to start for that $12/hr job that pays $22,000 a year! That is the world of 2013 and why these kids are pissed off and occupying Wall Street. They never got the opportunity others had for the same amount of work.
Easy. HR drone sees trade school? Then your resume goes in the trash etc.
If you want that awesome $29,000 a year job working 60 hours a week at the gringoDepot as a manager you need a full 4 year degree! To do anything aboe $17,000 a year you need a 4 year degree.
Perhaps someone in Silicon Valley or New York will rebuke my comment, but in the real world (Florida) that is what the jobs are and the lines for them are out the door and people are at the mercy of H.R.
Until their attitude changes on what is really required to perform a job they will just get an Indian instead with no experience but has the magical piece of paper. By the way I do have that magical piece of paper in case someone wants to tell me I am bitter. It just blows for those who did not get their careers started in 1999. For those who are reading this comment you are in a bubble.
If you are under 30 and have a 3.8 GPA but dropped out after your second year due to the lack of cash, well I am waiting for my coffee and fries. No H.R. will dump you for working at Starbucks or McDonalds instead of having an awesome job immediately which they also hypocritically turned down because you didn't have the magical piece of paper, so it cycles to a self fulfilling prophesy where there are no qualified applicants and we have a crises OMG.
It's 2013, and Windows Activation Is Still Frustrating
It's 2013, why are you still using Windows ?
Funny in 2003 I could escape Windows much easier.
Windows now is stable and has the free software components and apps have all improved. Maybe I am more important now and need the grownup apps where StarOffice was in the old days. It is not now.
Windows is not the piece of crap it once was and Linux no longer has the cool stable GUIs nor a monopoly on development tools it once had.
These XP loyalists who wont go to Window s7 scream when whey hear Linux! Why? It changes every few weeks when Ubuntu update changes something due to the lack of an ABI. Drivers for my ATI 5750 no longer work. A kernel update will break XORG etc.
Windows XP just stays the same for year after year after year. Why change?
FOSS means no support at all. I do not mean calling up some guy in India with a question either. I am referring to apps written for it. I am referring to hardware being QAd and well tested, I am taking staff being familiar with just that version.
Sorry but Redhat 7.0 with GCC 2.96 can't run the latest Gimp today. Nor in 10 years Gnome 2 will run. Redhat Enterprise will come the closest I guess but it is not because the community supports it. It is because they pay Redhat to support it.
The dow just hit 15,000 because corporations are sitting on mountains of cash.
They are being lazy and cheap and I.T. is not selling themselves and are being lazy.
You will be amazed at how these licenses will be resolved when feet are under the fire. Software requiring IE 8 is because the accountants buying them do not know what that means and corps just put up with it.
In 2001 would your boss buy something requiring Netscape 1.0? It would be shot down! Come and demand better!
IE8 is still supported. Windows 7 is just now something large companies and government are moving too. When you have hundreds of applications to verify or port it takes time.
XP is still supported as well. FireFox only gained GPO support recently and not many folks are even aware that exists.
Corporations are being stupid and short term profit sighted.
We upgraded in 2 years every desktop flat. That's what we did in those days and just because people do it every 10 years doesn't mean it is wrong to do it less?! Kind of like lemmonings dropping from a cliff. Yes the great recession hit I.T. hard and when the lights are going to be shut off in 2009 when Windows 7 came out is a great reason to stick with the aging XP. I did not buy Windows 7 because I was worried about the market and my wallet then too.
But just today the Dow hit 15,000! Why? Companies are sitting on record mountains of cash. They wont hire. They wont expand. They wont invest. They will lose the dollar to save that nickel so the accountants can give themselves a bonus on seen costs that fight nice in a spreadsheet..... enough rant.
If you have hundreds of apps my friend why don't you have the I.T. budget to keep it running. Does grandma have to certify her facebook before she upgrades? We did all these things with no problem and it is part of your job to do so and part of managements job to make sure they have the tools and staff to do so. Otherwise you are one code red disaster from losing 10 of millions and all your saved money will go out the drain in lost productivity.
No. This was not gross negligence. This was not a bug that would affect anyone under conditions remotely close to normal. This is something that is being actively exploited by someone (the criminal in this case) in a way never intended by the programmers. It'd be like suing the people who made the bullets used in the Sandy Hook massacre. Not only that, they probably agreed when they installed the software not to hold the software company responsible for anything. The way the system works, if Microsoft does this enough and demonstrates that they cannot create secure products, the market (cue angel choir) will punish them.
Would it be gross negligence to still use fucking IE 8 and XP... in 2013 no less?!
4 years is a long time. for comparison is is the time from Netscape 1.0 to IE 6. Can you image running Netscape 1.0 in 2001? Especially with security. XP has limited sandboxing and it is more dangerous regardless of the browser in XP. It doesn't have the kernel level support that Windows 7 has.
Get with the times folks as IE 9 which is over 2 years old (ancient again) does not have this problem.
Metro is the reason they want to stick with XP. XP to Windows 7 migrations slowed down tremendously as Windows 8 came. Many consumers see it and go back home to their 2006 XP machine and hug it and plan to stay with it and the cutting edge IE 8 for more years to come.
But that is cumbersome on a tablet where you do not want to type using instant search. You swipe when the keybard is behind the screen in the covertable or on the surface.
Adobe has like 24 links! Holy crap and does Visual Studio. Didn't the Zune had groups and catagories? Why couldn't something like this be in Windows 8? The darn thing was rushed with no polish.
Now consumers cringe and freak out when they see applets and the fud needs to be unlearned. I swear XP loyalists who hate Windows 7 see aero and think of Vista and they just assume Windows 7 must suck too and look for things wo whine about it. UGH. Mark my words in 2020 you will see +5 comments here praising Windows 7 and how they wont leave ever!... all because of an experience they had in the summer of 2012 8 years ago with 8.
That's not good enough. The Start menu has to return
No, it doesn't. Microsoft doesn't have to do anything. Haven't you figured that out yet?
I do not think Microsoft is as arrogant as people on this very anti-MS site make it them out to be. They have a corporate culture of release first and ask questions and fixes later. This is due to MS past as a monopolist. If it is ok it will take over the market. If it sucks then fix it next release after it has baked a little bit etc.
1st versions Windows... failed Office... failed (Mac users are oddly what kept Excel alive in the earlier years) Windows NT... failed Internet Explorer... failed WindowsCE... failed Vista... failed Visual Studio... failed
All these products are the hallmark of what MS is today and bring in the revenue. So they assume once it is out they can improve as people will automatically use just because it is from Microsoft. They are sadly still right in this area. Microsoft assumes oh, next release we will tweek it and Apple will be out of business next.
What bothered me most about Windows 8 is that METRO had HUGE potential but it was so fucking rushed. If Metro had a task bar, start menu, had app stacking, more than 1 app at a time, aero to navigate, then I could multitask with the applets and keep my mouse and keyboard. On touch or a small 12 inch screen then auto-hide by default and BAM!
Even better if they couldn't add that do something like "Click here to start! which told lusers where the start menu is instead say "Click here to app cycle" in the corners. Windows 95 had the polish. Windows 8 did not.
Instead they made it 4 colors from 16 million, made Office 2013 blinding headache white in ALL CAPS, took areo out, and just unpolished it. What MS is making a mistake is the market is not the same as it was in the 1990s. No we are not little good sheep and our bosses who forced us to upgrade very 2 - 3 years for the greatest have a love affair with the 11 year old XP and refuse change out of fear! Windows 7 is like pulling teeth with these same users who came to XP in droves.
Apple has the mindshare with Google right behind. If tablets are going to take over the only advantage MS has is office and it was smart for MS not to port Office over to Android/iOS as it would all be over for them. MS needs to react quick and fucking polish like they did with Windows 95. Not do the old way because it worked before and we wont change motto. That start menu will be coming back. The demo artist shot of Windows 8 from 2009 is still superior in so many ways and MS has its work cut out for Windows 9.
If you think Debian Stable is too old to be useful, give Atposid a spin!
Debian 7 is less than 24 hours into being the stable version, and went into release freeze status less than a year ago (2012-06-30). I'm endlessly amused by what people consider "old" these days.
It is possible they had a pre-release leading up to this with patches based on the RC candidates of Debian 7. I do not know as I do not run that distro.
Well here is a link. 2009 was abnormal. It got only above 60 a few days last year from my friends up there. Fairbanks it just got down to 0 right at the begininng of May which only in 1924 came close. The temperature in Anchorage has dropped 3 degrees F and up to 5F in the aluetian islands since 2000.
Your enterprise is so backwards and has a fear of anything new. You praised IE 6 a few years ago because you didn't liek the new gui's of Firefox and IE 8 and Windows 7 at your place is still a slow process with people crying and kicking.
Have you considered working in a more forward thinking environment where you are not a cost, and people are so scared of change? I work in such an environment now and since I am a contractor already have something else lined up.
How many api's and frameworks and apps that will freak if they do a string search for "Mysql" and just throw an exception??
Shit like this is why we still use IE 6/8 at work. If you are an ISP with 10,000 customers you will piss at least someone off, probably hundreds where they will seek a competitor if you did such a thing and cost them money. Maybe even sue you back to recoup the losses etc.
There is a lot of shitty software at there and that signature is not a characteristic of such the proprietary software world. Many customers use obsolete software because it if aint broke why fix it?
As with superior technology like Windows 7, Linux, Chrome/Firefox, Python 3, it is always ignored due to legacy issues for people needing XP, Solaris/SCO, IE 6 - 8, python 2 etc.
As long as CPanel only supports MySQL and all the tools and code support mysql then postgresql doesn't have a prayer. Does PostgreSQL allow multiple user accounts like mysql yet? ISPs are in a catch 22 as well where customers do nto demand it because they do not support it, they do not support it as customers do not require it.
That's within warming predictions. Local climate isn't global climate. Global warming may lead to local cooling. Your misunderstanding of the issues doesn't prove them wrong.
Well it has changed since you left. Glacierazation is increasing as the peaks around Anchorage have not melted in 3 years as each summer is a record cold and raining one consistently since 2000.
Alaska is considered the Canary in the coal mine. In the 1990s it warmed up in the interior first before the world. Now the permafrost line is reversing and tundra ponds in the west are increasing for the first time in 25 years as the permafrost is thinner in the summer than previous years. If Alaska stays colder longer (with Northern Canada, Europe, and Asia) the snow will reflect the heat back into space and cool it down further south. Eventually it will grow into an ice age. During the end of the last ice age surprising Alaska had many ice free peaks with Tundra vegetation and it warmed up first and spread around as the excess heat from the lack of snow melted the glaciers.
The question is the cause related to fresh water melt freezing the sea and reflecting heat back into space? Or something else? This could be a natural response to warming as the cooler air from Alaska made its way to the lower 48 and created snow in May! Snow cover again cools things down considerable.

I read your posts for awhile.
But Yahoo, Redit, and the discuss commenting on websites all use PostgreSQL and Facebook uses No-SQL for its web front end. Hoopla stack if I recall and Yahoo uses no-SQL as well when latency is important.
None of the ones you described use Mysql anyway. Most use nosql for their backbone for webscale.
