Thanks to Microsoft's known influence to corrupt all the standard bodies the "(applet)" tag is now depreciated. ITs been depreciated since html 3 last century. (forgive the lack of brackets as Slashdot's garbage filter will cut them out)
In essence I am guessing html tidy and other web authoring tools declare java objects as errors as applets are no longer part of the html standard.
I am still mad that MS did this and it killed java overnight as IE has 90% marketshare at the time so everyone ran away from it fearing IE would not accept an applet tag anymore.
I wish we can add applet or other tags back into the standards bodies so web designers wont be so afraid to use it.
THis is true. Its infuriating to many who spend 100k and years of their time for a degree but its true. A degree means you are smart and can learn. Thats it.
Its a great way in the US to start out with a degree with a low salary for 2 years until you can prove yourself and can then start making bigger bucks later on.
For the Dutch GP I will say what was true 10 years ago is no longer true today. If you were born 10 years later you could not just simply take a jr level software engineer position without a degree. Today employers will just throw out your application and resume in the trash.
Thats all fine and dandy until you can find someone in India who can do it for $5 an hour. This is the problem I have as many companies are used to outsourcing and now think web design is a minimal wage job. Its something that not Americans should do anymore just like manufactoring.
They pay for the bandwith but the packets end up on some major telecom conglomerate's fiber lines.
These magatelecoms want to charge ISP's and then charge their customers such as Google again for using their pipes.
They are upset because they can't double dip since the ISP Google uses already paid to use the backbone and now they want to charge Google again for hte same privilege.
Beause of the ban of net neutrality the telecoms now apply math from those who use bandwith such as the consumers and those who serve websites. The math is based on a double dipping model which is more profitable then the old one and its now legal thanks to corrupt lobbying and republicans.
Easy because they are not double dipping on using the backbone that the megatelecoms who.. err tax payers paid for... and these guys want to charge again and Google has plenty of money for them to double dip on.
No Walmart is so big that no one will dare send a DMCA notice (what does copyright protection mechanisms have to do with price advertising?) for violating mininium prices. THey are for it as they want to remain the lowest piced for all goods and do not like a bit of competition when it comes to price.
THis is in place to protect Walmart and other retailers so they can have the lowest prices and as a consumer you no longer get the benefits of capitalism as Walmart and Bestbuy decide what everyone pays (isn't that illegal?).
Infact I view MAP as a way to prohibit the sale of used items so we are all forced to buy it new. Walmart wants to have the lowest possible prices and banning the sale of used products means they are now the lowest again.
What will you make out of them? Webpages, client apps, games, or boring work applications?
THen consider the apis for what you want to do. Python is nice but it lacks severely in many gui apis compared to Java's swing or.NET windows forms.
If you want to get hired you need to focus on.NET or java as its what most employers want. A few will want experience with php for smaller websites if you want to start using that as many new graduates will not know it as they do not teach it that much yet at universities.
In regards to your comments on Java I have to say that Java is a rich language if you consider the depth of the javadocs where the apis are very rich. There is an api for everything and there are a ton of third party ones on the net unlike C# which everyone uses the MSDN to get their information.
I am going to night school at California bapstist university. You can work hours during the day and school at night and in weekends.
You have to prove to HR and yourself you can handle real work and a degree proves it. MCSE or without you are nothing without it in states such as California.
Like a job you may have to work 60 hours a week to get promoted and the same is true with working and going to school as businesses want people to not be lazy and take the weekend off (sarcasm on taking a weekend off).
WindowsXp was at least stable and was not based on DOS anymore. XP offered NT based apis such as encryption, windows update, USB support, flash drive support, dvd-rw, user logons, far supperior stability, Active directory, and many more improvements.
XP was faster than Windows in i/o intensive apps and could use 2 cpus. XP was faster in such systems.
Also Windows XP worked fine with 256 megs when it first came out. The apps were smaller then and did not statically linked bloated dll files and autostart upon booting up. The 1 gig figure might be closer to being accurate today with everything running as a service on startup with much bigger apps.
What does Vista offer? A cute 3d dark aero desktop and thats about it.
So the comparison is not the same. With XP you get more for your buck but it cost more in cpu cycles in older systems. Vista just slows everything down and is irrating.
The importance of doing an apt-get and having the apps work bugfree is importance as a desktop. I used to be a unix guy from 1999 when I tried Caldera openLinux lite and then tried out the FreeBSD's from 2001 - 2004.
I switched to vista (shudder)because I want something to just work. I just very recently got ubuntu to actually install bugfree on my laptop only to see strange screen artificats on white screens due to some way X is setup.
Anyway the big deal for OpenSolaris is for servers. Solaris can handle many threads concurrent and loads for high end servers and ZFS and Ztrace are very nice for system administrators running server farms.
As a desktop I would run from this as the plague as I assume its untested and buggy. Wifi, 3d, flash, and maybe wine compatibility for those hell bent on win32 apps. I could be wrong. I would not trust a server on this either as its not as well tested as Sun Solaris.
If you want a desktop use MacOSX or Windows. Linux for when you need to learn programming or unix and real solaris from sun for reliability and big iron.
I agree this would be a nice toy for those wanting to learn solaris.
The problem was the US governments retarded export restrictions on encryption and SSL. Thanks Clinton. Like its going to stop terrorists from downloading the codes illegall...
The result has been that many Asian banks switched to activeX controls for transactions since hackers can easily de-encrypt a 64-bit encryption algorithm. The browsers were all crippled so activeX was the only solution available for true 128 bit encryption.
The result is that activeX is the defacto standard for e-commerce and banking so many users do not want a mac because their bank or ebay asain edition requires activex for authentication. I am not too sure on ebay but plugging in an activeX control for any credit transaction is the norm over there.
The Japanese had a love affair with Apple for some time before the internet took off. But now its useless so this is they do not like anything non Microsoft today. Its amazing what happens when one company gets to decide standards to see a monopoly form in the marketplace. I hate ms for this more than anything as its the only reason they are still around.
Macs have had great marketshare before Steve Jobs left and the rise of Windows 95. Powerbooks were quite popular with mac classic at college for awhile in the early 1990's.
Linux is gaining incredible marketshare too. Its in the computer room behind the scenes and it powers most small to medium websites.
Macosx is nice because its easier to use and it comes with the cool slick powerbooks that everyone around college uses these days. With Linux I cross my fingers on my notebook to see if something will work. With MacOSX I can install Office, Photoshop, Wow, etc. If MacOSX server did not tie their own proprietary versions of php, apache, sql-lite to each release it might be a good server platform.
It depends what you use htem for.
Linux went one way and MacOSX went another. With Vista macosx actually increased on the desktop and I hope with Windows Server 08 the same will happen with linux but I doubt it because of critical win32 apps. Most businesses still install windows 2003 server and most servers today still dont support WS 08 that well astoundingly.
I went the opposite route and got fired for not working hard enough and acting inappropriately.
The.bomb happened next and millions of IT jobs were slashed or went overseas to India. I didn't have a degree to rely upon. 7 years later I am still hurt by this and I regret not working more as I am still royally screwed because of it.
If your boss says work more than 40 hours week you better do it! Or if you chose not to you will be working minimal wage jobs in poverty. THe repercussions could be a possible facing a divorce if you have bills to pay and can't find another job. If your young and have no experience like most generation Y employees who have this attitude then its a strong possibility as they do not have the experience to get another job in this recession.
If 60 hours a week is the norm start looking for different employers assuming the economy is good.
In this economic depression you can not afford to work just 40. I would work 60 just to make sure I am laid off. This sucks but most people work 12 hours a day and make less than $800 a year. We have it made if you think about it.
I am studying this subject in one of my marketing courses right now. Its a generation gap that creates the differences in psychology
Basically generation X (assuming your one of them as I am) grew up in days of layoffs, high interest rates, and economic turmoil. We are not loyal to our companies as they are not loyal to us. We work our asses off because they can send your ass to the street if they do not like you.Its good to jump ship when possible but never burn your bridges. ITs just a job but that job is required for us to survive.
Baby boomers have a mentality from their parents who grew up in the depression to be yes sir men because they should be thankful to just have a job. Many are old fashioned and do not want to spend more time at home as wives typically take care of that.
Kids today are generation Y. They grew up in prosperity in the 1990's and have lots of toys like laptops, ipods, expensive cell phones and watched their parents become rich with internet stocks and housing booms.
This is why the younger generation doesn't want to work hard. They assume they will be fine and its a right to have everything and a good job. Boy they are going to be in for it now when they are laid off due to the current depression and economic crises.
Not to mention some of us have kids and family and my wife would not be happy if she has to get up at 5am to get to work and then have to clean and make dinner and do homework with the kids because I decided to stay til 6:30 or 7pm. She then asks why dont I stay and do the work?
I do believe in the value of work but for some of us with kids between 1-9 that is very hard and its not fair to our wives that have to work too.
I bought one of the toshiba laptops for my wife. The space bar is oddly placed on the Toshiba and I keep pressing alt when I type on it. It drives me crazy. THe screen is not as good and looks washed out and blueish compared to a Viao or macbook. Its a huge 10 pounds and is more like a desktop in a thick 17 inch plastic case than a laptop.
Vista is loaded with drm at the kernel level so your screwed either way. Apple only has drm with Itunes at the application level.
I would chose the macbook pro. I hate to say it but drm is here and the content providers will refuse to release anything without it. Sure we can stick to our principles but then we lose the freedom of watching movies and videos. Its heading this way and Apple can not afford to lose this ability with their macs since they specialize in video production and photo editing.
Vista is much worse than anything Apple has ever done with content management. Everything on Windows is drmed to the core.
What kind of freedom do I lose by using a GNU browser? Does one exist?
Oh yeah there is Konqueror. It requires me uninstall Windows Vista, give up on ms office, wow, and many apps and use an os that is not supported fully by my laptop. I lose wifi, sound, lan, and 3d graphics. I would have to purchase an expensive mobile wifi card by sprint or verizon which is against the spirit of free software.
Oh that is right its my fault for buying a laptop that is not fully supported, but Linux or Gnu Turd is the saint and why is not everyone using? I do not have time nor should the average user care to look up every device in every computer for excellent linux driver support. Most stores wont give out all the hardware detail anyway for things like the 5-1 card reader. THe average Joe will just shake his head and prefer Windows after hearing about hardware support and blaming the user for problems with GNU/Linux.
Linux is great in the server room but not for the average Joe for the reasons I dscribe above. Installing Linux or other GNU software does lose time and freedom for people who want to get work done and use their equipment. Windows already comes with the price so they might as well use it. Install and work and have no problems.
After all of this I then end up with a browser that sucks and can't support sites like my bank and my schools outlook program.
Time is money. If free as in GNU is inferior and costs time then its not worth the free price.
Also in business I need things done and I do not care about freedom. Free things cost money to implement and support and I am willing to pay $$$ off of my employers dime if it helps us achieve the required results. RMS does not understand economics 101.
Firefox is both opensource and free to download and offers little drawbacks. In my opinion its freerer than the GNU alternatives.
I will take firefox with its source code anyday.
Also RMS should take an economics 101 class. Money is freedom as it gives incentives for people to work and offers rewards and excellent products and support.
Basically they learned alot from the mediocre BC launch and improved it.
The differences are Northrend is much bigger than the outlands, an achievement based system has been added so its not just about questing. The achievement is kind of hard to explain unless you play it but there are over 50 achievements and some of them unlock items you can buy which is really sweet.
Frozen throne is not just about a new map but game play and quests are more interactive. For example there is a crazy set of quests for Death knights and each time you leave the ship with Arathas the map changes and it gives the appearance of a full scourage invasion. In the end of the chain arathas comes down himself and argues with the other players before you are released from the scourge. I was wondering how the scourage would fit in with alliance vs horde but this was amazingly creative.
I hope I didn't spoil too much but wow feels like its a new upgrade and an almost overall with the 3.0 patches from the lich king expansion.
You do need to be a workaholic for a couple years and have marriage and parental difficulties as a result to accomplish it. But it gives you a chance to compete.
It can be said visionaries create success but you need capital and connections first which we go back to step one at working many hours to impress other people who will then lend you money or give you earned money to start on your own.
It involves risk as well but they pay off. Success is really a choice as hard work and dedication mixed with discipline can earn you up to middle management so you do not have to flip burgers. Why should you deserve a home, car, and middle class lifestyle if you do not put in the time and prove to yourself and your employer you deserve it?

I am curious to how it actually performs and not just what most the slashdotters say.
It may actually suck and I am curious as to how much.
I am contemplating leaving vista where I do php, apache, and java development. I wonder if there is an advantage at all.
The importance of doing an apt-get and having the apps work bugfree is importance as a desktop. I used to be a unix guy from 1999 when I tried Caldera openLinux lite and then tried out the FreeBSD's from 2001 - 2004.
