Most bussinesses get the no OS or the freedos and just wipe and install linux or windows. A good IT department has a blanket license anyway to prevent an audit by the BSA.
Also I may had customers buy linux preinstalled where freedos isn't an option (US I think) and install windows on them so they dont have to pay twice.
For a server or a pc in Asia you do not have to pay the MS tax anymore as this was part of the DOJ deal. FreeDOS is included because MS just changed the agreement to include any os and were not expecting linux or freedos to appear.
HP just recently overtook Dell as the number 1 pc manufactor.
I dont know how they are doing in the server space but their products have gone from extradinary in reliablity and quality to crap. If I were an IT manager I would be weary of any dell products in the server room unless they are really alot better than the desktops/laptops/printers that they make.
Years ago my father was hit with a project that he didn't have the budget or time to perform. He had to reduce inventory problems and link 4 wharehouses in 3 Canadian provinces together so the suppliers knew what was going on.
It would take months and years to hire a few VB programmers to write a sql program. I showed him some internet sites and explained how interactive cgi scrips with sql support were the new thing (this was in 97).
He then realized in 2 weeks he could have programmers develop a VB based IIS app and the suppliers and merchandizing staff could just use IE to see whats on hand and move items around.
Anyway its now popular for many businesses to hire former web developers for SAP and other intranet applications to solve business problems. Also if you know java and c# you could write desktop apps too since you obviously have enough experience to do and learn.
Also those closer ot the business process side are less likely to be outsourced to India. Any Indian or mouseclick jockey can create an app with Frontpage in under an hour. However you will be valued for saving your company money and be part of the business team if you shift focus to their needs and write more critical apps.
Dont let yourself be undervalued and learn business too if you feel weak in this area.
The compaq lines of systems are built for quality a little more but are more expensive. HP sells both. People look at price only and pick the HP most times.
HP also used to make the most reliable computers around. Carly Fiona changed this and thought the sales people were the ones responsible for products and to hell with anyone else.
Funny how joe sick pack bashes his Dell or HP but buys a Toyota or Honda and not a cheaper Kia? Kia is the cheapest right?
Will these consumers ever learn?
I guess if your ignorant about somethig you pick the cheapest. If joe six pack knows more about cars he will pick a good car but not think twice about his computer.
Many analysist think HP beat Dell because they now include software for photo and video management not to mention their laptops are great. Especially their compaq line.
Some of their printers have went down in quality but htey are going back up again.
Oddly Dell which used to make reliable quality systems is following the mistakes of old HP and gateway with crappy products in order to save a few bucks for the bean counters. Will these companies ever learn?
He actually made the company profitable and focused on emerging markets and retailers.
Fiona focused on screwing the engineers and developers and rewarding the sales department whenever something good or innovative happened. Alot of good people left and were undervalued. What a shame?
Hurd at NCR was used to having multiple products unrelating and knowing how to make money off them. HP refocused their strategy with selling computers to neophites and including software for pictures and video editing and reducing the sales price of the items at the retailers. Dell just kept reselling the same stuff only online and newbies want to be able to be told what the computers can do rather than buy something online without testing it out.
So far Hurd created supply chains as good as Dells and with the revamped marketing it was a kill to Dell.
You have all seen the commercials scaring people and saying that rates will go up and service will die if net neutrality ever happens please call your congressman at.. bla bla bla.
I have seen plenty of commercials scaring citizens saying that the internet and HIDEF TV is about to die unless something is done and we end Net Neutrality. Please call congress now and tell them you want to keep your highspeed access... yada yada yada.
Dont underestimate the power of lobbying. I think many citizens saw such commercials and told their representantives to not have net neutrality thinking there rates would actually go up and service would suffer.
I just saw a billboard today on the drive home that bugged me.
In big bold letters the sign said "Are your stocks down? Could your Broker be at fault? Call 1 800 -lawyers FOR-YOU" or something similiar to those lines.
Even if they have such a motto in their company statement they could still be sued as everyone wants to blame someone else for their problems in this day and age. Shareholders have lots and lots of money and know Google has plenty.
Also they could just simply fire the CEO Eric Schmidt. If the price of the shares are down for just one quarter they could use that as an excuse and replace the CEO with someone more pro greed and pro china.
Either way they can raise alot of hell and Wall Street does not like Google as it is. They are angry they forced the big brokers to buy at market prices before the IPO rather than make quiet backroom deals. Many anaylists dont like the fact they are different and create uncertaintity compared to most companies as well.
However you can not be moral and own a publically traded company. There is no compromise and in my opinion greed is the root of all evil.
Countless wars, homocides, poverty, dictatorships, and everything else have started because of money and the will of those who want it.
Google can't leave China now as I mentioned in another post that Eric Schmidt would lose his job.
All wallstreet is is about money and how to make more. Nothing else. Its sad when accountants with clipboards who are ignorant about long term legavity about a company make critical decisions but that is how bussiness is done.
Google is immoral but that is what publically traded companies are by nature. They exist to profit and mostly good things happen in the exchange of products and services but make no doubt about it they are evil and immoral like everyone else.
The problem I see is the cats already out of the bag.
They can't leave.
Will Eric keep his job as CEO? The shareholders will have a fit.
More than likely (worse case scenario) the CEO will be replaced with an evil right wing pro china and greed motto like the rest of corporate America and go back into China to make the shareholders happy.
Would you really want this?
Yes its semi evil vs evil. But at this point Eric Schmid will likely be fired if he pulls out of china and the next quarter does not reveal insane profit margins.
It would have been better if they never went into China but whatever your in it now.
Its been known for years since NT4 about the Windows Update manager.
I have seen it with the NT Server Network manager (I think that was it?) that sniffed out the packets. I remember reading how to enable your firewall to block it. ITs been awhile since I read about it but its old news.
My ram stick is taking longer and longer to access and I have a hunch its flash ram is getting burned out.
At the lab computers at school I use my flashdrive to run javadocs, javac, and gvim as well as my files. a million writes can easily be obtained by large apps such as the 70 megs of html of javadocs.
Do you have any idea how much swapping Windows braindead vm uses?
Even if you have plenty of ram it constantly swaps. It would eat flash ram for breakfast. Windows sucks balls in this area big time.
I am amazed at how much longer my notebook lasts under Linux because its not constantly swapping unlike XP. The hard drive light is always on under XP and it drives me nuts.
My old 512 that is a year and a half old is taking a long time accessing back and forth but I have not lost any data. Yes I make sure its defragmented. I wonder if defect management is working in the firmware on it as it appeared strange.
Problem is businesses today is cheap after the shares of most companies went down during the.bomb.
Instead of using third party or custom database apps, many corporations used excel spreadsheets that have hundreds of thousands of rows. Yes I have seen them. Shudder...
How do you debug them? Most humans are not programmers and real programmers of course would never let htis happen and would develop a costum app for each task instead.
Not funny if the only way to suceed in IT is start at help desk:-(
OR worse doing repair where your employer can rip you off. Otherwise they wont consider you for any other job. At least not in Florida where I live.
I can't wait to get my degree so I dont have to take such jobs and I can explain my worth. Its hard to prove you once worked in IT before the.bomb and know yoru stuff when you work for 7/hr jobs for several years. I was hoping the AOL help desk would save me. The handle time requirements were unreal and it was about talking very fast and being incorrect to get people to hang up on you. Not about solving problems which would take more than 9 minutes. Especially those with malware infested machines that take 15 minutes to boot up while you wait in fear looking at the clock... shudder.
Maybe a system where a user could pay more money for a special tier for the guaranteed delivery of packets. Hmmm... rolls eyes.
I had a feeling the telecom industry probably had something to do with the article until I read it was written by someone with ties to a packet shaping company.

I meant vbscript. Not vb for the intranet site. doh

HP's stock price went up %7 when she was fired!
:-)
That means she has a negative networth well into the billions.
So if you ever feel down and broke just think you are worth hell of alot more than Carly Fiona.

I mainly use WindowsXP and the fonts are small and look like garbage.
It looks better with Firefox under Linux then Windows. I wonder if I can adjust firefox's fonts with just one domain?

Yeah offtopic, but no where else is there to nag about it.
Anyone using Opera had problems with it besides me?
