It would be nice if slashdot discussed or made a post about the newslayer somewhere since the new CSS are torture for some of us who like to discuss it without being OT.
Especially for Opera users or those with high resolution desktops.
True. Iowa and Indiana both are booming in IT jobs.
Texas is dirt cheap and there are plenty of great schools with a good workforce. I maybe moving to Dallas within a year or perhaps Austin.
Austin sed to be very expensive to live during the.com high but since the outsourcing trend started, prices for homes fell quit alot and many companies are coming back and hiring more people.
:.. I think some people feel that because India is a long way away those employees don't matter. Only a sick kind of employer would feel that way. Once you hire someone you owe it to them to make it work
I have seen this at at least 2 employers that I worked for. One of them was AOL. Mainly we are commidites and if you dont do your job and screw up you need to be fired and replaced with someone else as quick as possible. This is true regardless of the %60 turnover rate within 90 days. Needless to say I quit IT for now
I got the twice the cost feature from consultants and differences in programmers who work in mission critical apps vs regular developers.
FOr crashproof apps that can be proven to not crash mathmatically the developers who work there are more like engineers and charge twice as much salary.
Its probably not perfect but a product as complex as Windows would surely be outrageously expensive to rewrite using the same languages and methodologies not to mention they would have to hire software engineers instead of programmers.
Funny I thought drm was not required to encrypt a drive? Oh yeah, all the components will have a trust relationship to lock data from the user and to force upgrades as windows will refuse to run if you change more than 2 or 3 things without paying for it again.

The odd thing is most of those were kde specific bugs.
I remember reading at the last minute that Ubuntu decided to add kde 3.5.1 and xorg7.1. Both are only a week or two old. Bad decision.:-(
Ubuntu is much larger than kubuntu so they probably ignored the kde bugs as most of them used gnome.
I find it disturbing but sadly these days all the distro's have these bugs. I found the livecd less buggy then suse's or knoppix so far.
But I need XP for school this summer and I will wait until next fall to install Ubuntu with kde. By then it should be more baked with less bugs.
I have been lucky in seeing no bugs at all besides my touchpad being too sensitive. I am sure I can configure that in XOrg.conf when I eventual decide to install it later.
I just purchased an HP myself. A HP/Compaq actually and researched the AMD vs intel chipset notebooks. Intel has been historically behind on support for wifi chipsets but the situation has changed.
I googled the broadcom chipset and went to broadcoms site noticed their attitute is "Go use NDIS and buy a copy of windows". I feel its the same attitude of game makers as soon as macs supported bootcamp.
Its currently being reversed engineered but until broadcom stops wanting to be cheap by cancelling linux support since NDIS is available I would write them an email complaining and just go through the nasty hassle of using windows dlls via NDS under linux.
Needless to say my v4000 intel wifi was detected by default. Since its new I would say thats pretty impressive and I am glad I picked the Intel V4000 instead of the AMD v5015.
You can thank IBM from having a monopoly on the market.
IBM's ruled the world and no one got fired for buying an IBM. Dos was a joke as was the IBM XT 8086. But it was from IBM so bussinesses waited until it came out because they had (everyone else ran IBM/).
What does this have to do with windows? Everything. If your a game publisher back in the 80's which platform would you target? Mac with %12 marketshare or the pc with %80 market share?
Now after the clones started and MS threw windows everywhere the argument is the same.
So in actuality the reason the games are available for the pc is its what everyone is using. Until more people buy macs and they cross that %15 or %20 marketshare line this is not going to change. Its just not profitable as development costs for a rewrite would be huge.
You can also thank Microsoft for proprietary api's like DIRECTx which was specifically designed to kill Apple and aso MS Visual C++ which is not standard C++. So this makes it very expensive to port anything.
Amazing how following the herd and obfuscating standards caused this mess?
Before Solaris had a free license it was expensive as are other unixies such as Irix and AIX. But hey they are server grade.
Also yes nice cars like Toyota's and Hondas(expect my old one) do cost more than a similiarly equiped chevy or Kia. Rolls Royce makes the most reliable cars on the planet if you can afford the 150k+ price tag.
But suing everyone making everyone liable is not going to solve the problem. Even the most reliable cars will fail as they age. If it were easy to sue car companies the price would double. Infact when I bought my hyundia I had to sign docuements saying I wouldn't sue and that I was liable under current lemon laws only. I have a feeling the lawyers would find anything with a fine tooth comb in order to make some money.
Your car might be nice but I am in college and therefore poor as I only work 20-35 hours a week. People like us buy the Ford focuses, kia's, and hyundia's. So there is a market for everyone.
If customers want something stable and commercial grade then they have to pay. Not expect everyone to do this for a flawless product and sue everyone who doesnt. The market will decide how much they are willing to pay for what. The markets rule and not the lawyers.
Such special companies who make %100 reliable software exist for specialized apps.
No because the much higher price of software would put pressure to reduce costs by firing people in IT departments across the globe. Not to mention even some vendors would fire people as well to cut costs to pay for the huge liability premiums and would help limit innovation.
As an example I would point out hte price of US healthcare. In seattle if you want eye surgury for half the price there are companies available that will shuttle you to Vancouver Canada where its half priced. Keep in mind hte Canadian government does not compensate them for working on Americans.
Its because of the hidden liability tax on all scales from the drugs, to the equipment makes, to the doctors own liability premiums.
But liability in potential litigation is anything but. I feel the lawyers will have a field day on this like they always do for everything else.
Yes, I am heavily in favor of tort reform and think lawyers are the scum of society but I have never seen anyone sue anyone other than to make a quick buck at the expense of society.
I certainly would not develop any software available on the internet and would pull anything as someone could just incorporate my code, be sued, and then sue me claiming its my bug.
Its a problem for those who prefer to use BSD style licenses. THis means I have no legal recourse since I said in my EULA that they can use my software in their product. It was my fault that this vendor lost millions of dollars, shouldn't the company be compensated for, etc? PRetty hard to defend myself
What if you write an api or even a program and some commercial vendor uses your code. THe bug was found in your code and the vendor gets sued.
How do you know vendor X wont come after you to pay for their court costs?
Also businesses would purchase liability insurance. Mabye their agreement with the insurance company is to sue others and use that money to help pay the insurance company so they can maximumize profit by minimizing losses when they got to court.
Also many vendors would go out of business and if your in IT you would need to compete with many exemployees from these vendors. Last businesses might let you go as the price of software goes through the roof and the IT department needs to stay within budget by cutting costs by firing people.
ITs a no win situation for everyone but the lawyers of course.
bugfree software can exists but the software engineers(not programmers) who design such customized products charge twice as much for their labor. No one wants to pay $700 for an OS. Thats how much it would cost if you double the price of WindowsXP
The lawyers will have a field day on this as they love to lie and makeup about losses ( eg. emotional damages and psychological harm, etc).
Lawsuits are lottery tickets that are ruining society and nothing more.
If a customer needs something that absolutely positively can not crash they could purchase a package(twice as much as a comparable one) and specify it in a contract to not crash. Infact such software companies exist and use strict methodolies and languages like lisp with real computer science graduates. Mostly they design medical, aerospace, and factory control apps. But hey you get what you pay for.
The problem is no one wants to pay $700 for an OS and $500 for a word processor. ITs just cost inhibitive so instead they just want to have the ability to sue thinking they can have this great stability at the same price. Its not going to happen
great until you develop software for a living. How would I support myself? My landlord wont give me free rent if I donate my time for free so why should proprietary software die?
Dont give me the argument that I could work for a corporation devloping inhouse apps? With all the now fired developers competing with me and the Indians for jobs my wages would be barely above minimal wage as everyone would be desperate to work,
Last its more expensive to design everything in house than to buy proprietary and customizable proprietary software.
Basic economics teaches that if a proprietary product is a piece of crap then it will die and be replaced by someone else. We dont need free software to exist. Though it is nice
You may want to google in slashdot's domain for Apple stories and people writing kernel modules that probe the cpu temperature.
Apple intentionally hid this because some reviewers noticed temperates as high as 95C!
They wont help the life of your system. I assume they use too much power as well but I dont know. After hearing that I intentionally went out of my way for an older Centrino system.
If your paying such a huge huge cost for a beast then $70 is minimal.
But I can understand its based on principal rather than financial reasons. Windows is still nice to have around if you need it occasionally. Especially if you use VMware from unix.
I think its a waste of money for this monster as gaming sucks with the tiny notebook keyboards and lcd screens. Not to mention all the hard drives still run at 4200 or 5400 rpm's and the sound sucks. You can buy nice headphones but the integrated sound typically are winsound cards run mostly in software with some hardware functions. That could slow a game down in 3d sound with lots of monsters on the screen.
If you need a gaming machine get a desktop. My laptop has a crappy intel video that is fine for what it does and its great for schoolwork. But my desktop is where I prefer the gaming. ( I really dont have time for gaming anymore so make that...did)
The whole point of this notebook is to play your games at places like the airport away from home. Kind of hard when you run out of power.
Which version of Ubuntu? Also was it a via or intel chipset?
The new dapper is the only version of linux that works on my system flawlessly. I bought the cheaper $740 compaq pressario 4000.
However I do notice strange anomaly with the keyboard on linux. But its the same way with a default install of XP without HP quickkeys. I think it uses a software based ps/2 filter so when you type text it will occasionally move to a different part of the screen. I am sure there is a work around in linux because its very easy to fix.
But try the livecd of dapper. As long as you dont have the broadcom wifi chipsets you should be fine.
I decided to liveboot the cd just now on my el-cheapo Compaq pressario 4000 laptop expecting a load of problems and it booted right up.
My system is a hackers nightmare.
The intel based wifi, the winsoundcard, touchpad, and even the mmc card reader works!
I switched to FreeBSD from Linux around 2001 after countless alpha and beta quality linux distro's that were supposed to be stable kept fustrating me. Isn't this why I left Windows and yet w2k doesn't have this problem??
But so far ubuntu beat my expectations.
Even the crappy intel based 945G graphics chip is smooth with the video with great color and zero clipping. My athlonXP+2400 with its nvidia 6600 is a little clippy with video under non ubuntu distro's.
I only found one bug that is the fault of compaq since it uses a PS/2 filter in software to save $.15. The text will move randomly across this post as I type but I have seen this with a default install of XP. There is a software linux version of a ps/2 filter I have to install but other than that its flawless. Good work
Tipping or not you are required under law to report any wrong doing. Even in private industry you can still be tried under lesser charges for not reporting a crime.
Yes the guy got away but this is why we have due process and need protection for employees. The whistleblower laws should apply for government workers as well. They are not special and should be held more accountable
Its about everything the whitehouse has done since 2000. If you read some of the posts here you can find almost a dozen constitional violations with a cult like congress and senate who are blindly patriotic and approve of the actions.
Yes, its now ok to break the law. Infact I read another chilling post here on slashdot last week about a government employee making an oath to the constitution. IN the 90's the oath including protecting the constittion and supporting the president and following the laws of the land and his supperiors all the way to the president.
Today the same oath has nothing to do with following laws faithfully but rather following orders of supperiors all the way to the president. It was deleted out. Why is that?
Not to sound paranoid but the other poster did notice similiarities to Germany and Japan just before WWII. Things were fine until dire economic conditions hit both countries and with no safe guards abuse of power and dictators were born that caused WWII.
Still for me its about morality and ethics. You DONT BREAK THE LAW. I dont give a crap if its a post 9-11 world and if your the president or senior advisor at the pentagon. If I follow it for society then so should you or face consequences.
But the warrant was obtained illegally and as citizens we are expected to report any wrong doing. Job function or not he should have been protected.
Yes whistleblower laws should go into effect as the memo was not out of incompentance but to report misconduct and illegal violations of the US constition.
The prosecuter should be debarred and in jail if he approved of his firing and knew what happened. Scary indeed. But if he went to the rpess he still would have been fired for not doing the proper procedure which was letting someone know inside the department first. Disgusting.
Last week the white house stated that freedom of speech doesn't apply to the press that leak stories with national secrets and the NSA has confirmed they are monitoring all phone calls by reporters!
So yes it should be illegal to release classified information. But what about deep throat during watergate? Nixon made his actions classified to avoid prosecution.
So with the whistleblower laws deep throat would be in jail and no one would have known about watergate.
Whats bad is you can't go to the press if the governmetn does something illegal. It was classified right? So you and the reporter goes to jail.
This creates a climate where everything is secret. Kind of scary
It would be nice if slashdot discussed or made a post about the newslayer somewhere since the new CSS are torture for some of us who like to discuss it without being OT.

Here are one of the ways Microsoft is trying to sell the fritz chip as a good thing.
