  4. Re:could someone do back-of-envelope calculation on Growing Insulin · · Score: 1
Type II diabetes can be managed solely with oral medication which increases the body's sensitivity to the insulin it does produce, and in many cases controlled solely with diet and exercise. (Losing weight can often cause Type II diabetes to disappear.) It is extremely rare for Type II to require external insulin rejections. Interestingly enough, while Type II is less "severe", this very fact makes it far more dangerous because it frequently goes undiagnosed for long periods of time, and the elevated bloodsugars do damage to various parts of the body.

Actually, per my endocrinologist team, a good 40% of all Type II diabetics are controlled with insulin. So "extremely rare" is a mis-statement. Up until this year, my parents, as well as myself, were all managed with insulin to control our Type II diabetes.

My own regimen consisted of: Actos (insulin sensitizer), Glucovance (Metformin/Glyburide combo drug), Glucophage XR (extended release Metformin), and 70/30 insulin (started at 14u 2x/day, was down to 10u 2x/day). Currently, I take about 750mg more of Metformin, than is considered the "maximum dosage"--luckily I tolerate it fairly well.

Now I'm on all of that still (except the insulin), and Byetta, 10mcg 2x/day. Now, I'm finally losing weight (after a month & a half on it, I've lost over 10 pounds), and my blood sugars are superb. I'm dealing with the more unpleasant side effects of the Byetta--but gladly. I can deal with having to take dramamine and immodium before bedtime--it's a temporary solution. Once the weight is down enough, I will be off the Byetta, and the majority of those oral meds listed above.

And they're coming out with a drug, based on the same gila monster saliva as Byetta, which helps Type I's produce their own insulin again, thus reducing their need for external insulin. That is an amazing thing, in my book. Now, whether those beta cells will continue to produce insulin on their own, is another thing.

The thing to keep in mind, is that Type II tends to run in families.

To help catch Type II early, a simple blood test given once a year can help your doctor keep an eye on your insulin levels. (If you're producing more insulin than a normal person would, you're probably insulin resistant, which is what Type II diabetes is.)

A few months back, I was at a CompU$A looking at hard drives (they were having a sale on Seagate 160gb at the time), and this poor lady was there with her Maxtor firewire drive and her Powerbook.

Apple Tech: Sorry, but since you never activated your AppleCare account, I can't even touch your laptop. Sorry.
Lady: But..? I need my files--My composition is due next week!
    Apple Tech: Sorry.
    Me: May I?
    Apple Tech: Um...
    Lady: Sure!
Me: *poke*look* Ok--it looks like the firewire port on your laptop is broken (physically). *checks drive* Damn, this thing only does firewire. Do you mind spending $50 bux?
    Lady: Um--no!
Me: Follow me. *walk 10 feet away to where they have external drive enclosures, grab a USB2.0 enclosure* Here you go. Are you handy with a screwdriver?
    Lady: Yup!
Me: Ok--use a non-magnetic one, open this case (holding up her old drive), gently remove the drive, and put it into this case (holding up new USB2.0 enclosure).
Lady: But isn't that the same thing?
Me: Ahhah! This is USB2.0, which your powerbook does support, and you won't know the difference. It just uses a different cable and it will plug into *points* this port here.
    Lady: You're a lifesaver!
Me: No sweat. If you have any questions, here's my card.
Lady: Thank you so much! *HUG*
    Me: You're welcome!

As we walk up to the front of the store, Apple Tech is still looking all red faced and pissed. Apparently I cost him a sale or someshit. Granted, she should have been smarter, and activated her AppleCare before it was lost (that's an expensive loss too :-/), but he could have at least *looked* at the freaking box to see if it was anything obvious like physically broken hardware. It's called "fostering customer relationships" which these guys have No Clue about, it seems.

My mother is blind due to diabetes-induced glaucoma. She is stuck using a crappy end-of-life'd One Touch Profile, because all of the new, nifty meters can't be used by blind people (that is, there are no devices to help them guide the blood onto the strip, there are no voice boxes available, etc.). It's a serious issue that most of these companies (One Touch, Accuchek, Freestyle, etc.) never address. How many diabetics are blind, people? A good bunch. Why don't they design monitoring devices for their use too?

Personally, I have a One Touch Ultra Smart, and I love 90% of it. I hate the fact that I can't edit the labels for "Health" and "Exercise" for instance. I love the graphing. I love the capillary-action strips. The 5-second test time is amazingly convenient, as well.

My dad uses an Accuchek of some variety--he swears by it, even though it takes 10x as long for him to get a reading than I do.

I'd love to see something that has a built-in voice box for blind people (seriously, how hard would this be nowadays??). I'd love to see that same model allow them to use the newer capillary-action strips, as well.
