Two years ago I bought an iBook G3 600Mhz with 384Meg RAM (12.1" TFT). While not a powerhouse, it runs Mac OS X Jaguar just fine. While I paid over 2000$ for it back then, you can get that right now for only 999$ (G3 800Mhz, 128Meg RAM), slap in some extra RAM (which is cheap) and for a bit more than $1K you have an Apple.

I guess you want to do Dynamic Fluid Calculations, and simulate some nuclear reaction on the road, so you really *need* that G5 Powerbook....

If you are new to Mac, just start with the low end. If you're happy with that, you know why people spend so much on the high-end models. I know now, and if I had 4000$ spare, I'd be first in line to buy a new G5 Powerbook. (And my sister would be most happy with my current iBook)

Why exactly do you install drivers for a mouse and/or a keyboard? I like the Logitech hardware, all my mice are Logitech but I have never installed their software (yeah, long ago and I decided it was crap). Traditional mice (3-button mice, these days even with scrollwheel) are supported by any modern operating system.

For keyboards I don't know. I just did the mistake of buying a logitech keyboard and the only thing that really is annoying is the F-lock key I have to press in order to use the function keys. There are extra keys on that keyboard which would need drivers, but I really couldn't care less for a "Mail-button" or a "MP3-button".

Besides, Ad-Aware detects spyware in the default install of Windows 2000, namely MediaPlayer. It's just a registry key, but hey.... one does need to keep up the paranoia....

These line says it all about the OpenBSD culture, which is arguably the most hostile towards newbies of any of the major open source OSes.

I personally don't find OpenBSD hard at all. Two years ago, I installed OpenBSD for the first time on a spare machine to toy around with it. My experience with any *BSD was about nil, and my Linux knowlegde didn't get further than "stick in CD and wait". Later, I took a dedicated machine and made a firewall/NAT out of it. Did I find it hard? No, not at all. The configuration scripts are easy and simple. The FAQ's and HOW-TO's on the internet are usually well written and explain a lot about it.
It is true that you should not be scared from the command line, but I never have been. However, neither is the typical Linux user. I have used Linux in different distributions including Corel, Debian, SuSE, Redhad and also Slackware. Only in Slackware I found the simplicity of OpenBSD, so guess which Linux I now use?

Installing OpenBSD is as easy as answering a few questions (oh, granted you need to know partitions), what you get is a minimal enabled system where you need to activate whatever you want to run. I personally find this a Good Thing.

I'll grant the system it's amazing technical merits, but the worst thing about OpenBSD is its vocal users.

As opposed to Mac Zealots or Linux fanatics? Honesty, look at this message board. You will barely see OpenBSD comments (well, in other threads of course, here the topic *is* OpenBSD). If you mean that we OpenBSD users are not willing to help, then you are wrong. I have found help on the internet, and I am willing to help anyone that asks. (Within my own capacities of course). Look OpenBSD is just a great choice for a specific task, I use a iBook as laptop, I use Linux and Windows 2000 on my x86 desktop, I just choose the right tool for the job.

Anyways, I have heard the term "courriel" years ago. It is not a new word, it is just not widely used. As for the matter, most languages I know don't use "e-mail". Usually we refer to "e-mail" as "mail". That can be quite confusing when talking to an english person. If you say "mail me it", they often look in a confused way like "what? by snailmail"?

The only place where you will see "courriel" is in administrative documents. The general populace will stick to "mail" or "courrier éléctronique" (which *is* widely used)

I don't think you can blame the French to try to keep a national identity by adapting their language. After all, they have words for about anything in IT. Think of "télécharger" (to download), or "ordinateur" (computer), or "carte graphique" (graphics card). The funniest one for me is "octet" instead of "byte", but that is mainly because I always thought that the difference between "octet" and "byte" is the bit-alignment.
