You can bitch all you want about paying less than a WoW subscription to play all of your console games online, but that doesn't make the PSN even close to XBox Live. PSN always makes me feel like I'm playing multiplayer in 1998. I mean that literally not as a slam. I enjoy games from 1998 still. This may have more to do with the fact that Halo has amazing multiplayer if you are in to the game, and there is a lot of consistency between titles with good matchmaking. It is not there for you to save data that would otherwise not exist and patent it for use in generating a timeline of where you've been on a map. Sure, you can do that with a cache, but you wouldn't ordinarily specify that in the patent. Tracking, maybe not. Cache, certainly not. Its the difference between cached pages and your browser history.

GIFs would be downright tasteful these days. The reason GIFs seemed so terrible in the day is because of general crappy design. Flash is animated, these GIFs are clearly more tasteful than most flash, and GIFs can only animate. They can't spew sound or rape your computer. Our ability to design has grown up a lot since geocities and has nothing to do with the specific implementation of animation.
