But as long as you are, MS, please give us a non network dependent tool for maintaining and distributing patches and updates.
MS should have a free 800 windows update dailup number that anyone can connect to and download the updates. Why not make a free windowsupate MSN account and give it out to the world?
Social engineering-based cracking can't be stopped. Not by Windows, not by Linux.
Well, it can be, but then we'd need one really secure computer that had its own automated defenses with orders to shoot any human that attempted to reprogram it and to not accept any remote connections or user I/O.
You're telling users that they need to shell out almost a hundred bucks for a device that will allow them to safely download updates. Has Microsoft security gotten so bad that we're just going to accept that you need to buy a firewall just keep your OS up to date? Does anyone else see a problem with this?
Our office lan has a hardware firewall and a network installed virsus scanner. I think every network should be secured.
As a home user, do you trust Cable One, AOL, or a generic small time ISP to keep you safe? Are they responible for filtering all network traffic before it hits you? I'm going to say they should have hardware firewalls of there own.
The/. crowd will never want filtered internet for themselves. But for your family? Wouldn't you want your mom on an AOL idiot proofed connection? If anything goes wrong, you could just tell her to call AOL and play dumb.
Will these things light the interstate up red if a pedestrain is walking there?
Those pedestrians shouldn't be walking along the interstate! That is just asking for a Darwin award. I know it would suck if you had a flat or ran out of gas, but really you shouldn't walk on the shoulder of the interstate. You should be off the road entirely if you ever need to walk there.
Shouldn't your post be titled "Ordering A4 in US Pain Butt"? I don't know about you but I'd have been getting angry at whoever "needed" that A4 paper after so may transfers.
does this remind anyone else of the Animatrix, on how the skies were darkened to stop the machines?
Let's see we require organic machines that are called plants to live. Without sunlight, it is very difficult to grow plants. O.k. I can see it now all unintelligent life (a.k.a. humans) will be destoried by "dimming" the sun so most plant life won't grow. I hope we actually have intelligent machine life here to replace us. Machines could atleast change their power source. We are stuck eating plants or animal life that has already ate plants.
As for home media centers, I bet Sony will eventually wipe the floor with Microsoft
I'm personnally betting that the PS4 would be Sony's grand attempt at a universal media server. PS3 is too soon. They are playing around with PVR products and have their eye on the home media center. IBM has their interests o.k. in being chip R&D and making the chips. Sony could do this by themselves, but it does make sense to partner with an MS rival. Nintendo is not rivaling MS in anything but game consoles. Nintendo is more likely to be bought than beat though. (Actually, it would have made alot of sense for MS to do that.) I think the XBox is MS's early attempt at game console/home media consoles.
These are just my personnal thoughts on the subject.
To permit two AGP cards running natively (via the AGP bus) in a single system would be quite difficult if not impossible, far easier to look to the future and a new technology to make it work better then any sort of hack job that could be done today.
But this is/. That is what would really make/. news. Near impossible hacks on old hardware that are far easier on newer hardward that's designed for the task is the bread and butter of/.
But, on the average, a dropout isn't going to make as much money as somebody who got the BS. But that doesn't mean that the other 99.9% of folks who didn't "finish their education" are particularly brilliant.
My thing is that I graduated with a BS from an state university. Both my brothers barely made it out of HS. Both my brothers make more than me. I know it averages and odd data points. I just hate seeing my brothers do better than me money wise when I was always ahead of them in grades in school.
Life teaches you that school doesn't matter. Work doesn't matter other than the money you earn. What really matters is that you are somewhat happy doing what you do. If the money is a limiting factor for you, because you don't make much, find a job that you can earn more at. (You may not like it as much though.)
Actually, both my brothers are slightly happier than I am. Ok. I have a wife and they don't so I am unhappy far more often than they are.
Bullshit, it shows they are liars and will probably be fired and sued for the overcompensation they received. If they were qualified without the "fake" degree why didn't they apply that way?
You must be new to the US. The way things work are HR writes an impossible requirements page. Recent grads. with no work but lots of classroom experience, put as many buzz words in and get their resume padded that way. People that have been working for 10 years, but don't have anything other than a HS diploma if that just put down what they've done. Here is news for you: HS drop outs can make alot more money than PhD folks. On average they don't, but they can if they have the drive and skills. PhD folks rarely make good employees. They've just spent way too much time in school getting "educated" to be useful to society in anything but a research setting. HS drop outs are usually of no better use to society than janitors and min. wage employees. I'll let you in on a secret. There are people that have made millions without a degree of either HS or College.
I don't want a doctor that only knows how to expand his mental horizons and creatively problem solve. I want a doctor that can tell me what is wrong and if he determines that there is nothing wrong with me won't just give me drugs to make me happy and go away (otherwise known as creative problem solving.)
I don't want emergency personnel that have to look up things in the big book what is wrong with me and how to treat it. It may take them 10-15 min. to look it up, but I want them acting on me to save my life in that 10-15 mins not looking up information that they should know!
A good teacher (as long as they have support in discipline issues), can teach students with nothing but a blackboard and chalk for the teacher and paper and pencils for the students.
Honestly, this is the truth. Here are ways that tech should attempt to improve the educational process. 1. Digital White Boards that automatically store and catalog all the class room notes that a teacher writes. 2. Class websites that teachers don't have to update. The website should give a student access to the white board, homework assignments, their current grades, and maybe class access to the book and related materials. 3. If politicans really wanted to improve things, they should drive e-ink. Laptops and PDA's don't beat a notepad with folders. (What were they called trapper keepers?) Each student's desk just needs: an area to take notes, an area for the book, a pencil and anything else that they teacher thinks would be helpful. If all the notes, and books were digital and automatically stored on the class website, and all the test taken on these things and no games, it might be helpful.
Oh, one other thing these devices shouldn't cost more than a standard desk or whiteboard.
If you're accused of touching a child 10 times, that's a mandatory 10-24 year sentence for each charge. That's 100-240 years in prison without possibility of parole.
I hope your state's laws are worded better. I can just see that every school child, parent, teacher, and day care operators in Arizon is a criminal now.
If you gave me a 100 mbit line, it would take me over 92 days to fill it up with porn. More if I slept.
yeah, but if you looked closer, it's the same 6 gigs over and over again.
I'd be more impressed if you used high resolution cameras and filled it up with your personnally made p0rn myself. Its cheating to use media made by others. You should do it youself. Then wait for it.. open source it.
And as long as Big Brother ain't watching, I'm gonna continue to be.
Please, don't walk in the woods in AR or TX. You may not make it out. I'm just warning you for your own safety. Remember if Big Brother isn't watching you then he isn't watching anyone that may attack you.
When have there ever been seven TV programs worth watching on at the same time?
I'm going to call this one. There have been times that 3 or more shows have been on in the same time block that I'd have liked to watch. I agree that TV generally has gone down hill. The thing Cable has special interest shows.
If I was a sports person, I might want to record 3-4 games and a sitcom. If I was a homesitter, I'd likely record 4-5 stations worth of daytime soaps. When I was a teenager, there was a time block of 3:00-4:00 that all the really good after school cartoons came on. Here is another thought though. Maybe this isn't might all for me. Maybe it is so that I can record my 2 shows, while my wife can get her 2 shows, and my 2 kids can each have some options. I may be interested in entirely different things than my kids, but it would be nice if we had one center media server that did all. In my parents house we started off with 1 VCR. Over the years each individual either bought or recieved a VCR for a gift. PVRs are alot more powerful and personal than VCRs. IF I had the $3-4K that this will likely cost, I'd buy it. I don't have that kinda of money. If it was $500-$1500, I could maybe get it by the wife though.
N.B. It usually takes about 10 years and close to a bilion dollars to go from a chemical/protein to an approved drug in America. Let's check back in a few years.
If some place easy to travel to "approves" it for human use, we will go there. I could just the ads now for the week trip to Mexican diet resort. Could you see the stampede when a famous person who eveyone knows is fat gets starts doing this? All it takes is a handfull of "success" stories. Then some reason all the idiots decide if it worked for them it must work for me as well. And we'd see massive travel to whereever slightly overweight people can travel to and get this treatment. Gosh, if we could just get our selfs to excerise more. I'd say we need to get rid of that daily commute and ride a bike to work... I live 20 miles from where I work. I think that I'd kill over in the first day or 2 if had to excerise like that. (IF I lived though, I'd be much healthier though.)
Condemn the packaging (or the mfgr of the refrigerator), not the unit of measure. There is no reason the dairys could not distribute milk in 3.5 or 4.0 liter containers, similar to the current gallon jugs.
O.k. Why are those 2L soda bottles designed like they are? If 2L bottles were better designed, then those of us in the US would start to like metric more. Come on 2L soda bottles are the only thing we come into contact with. If the only time you came into contact with a unit of measure was with a badly designed piece of packaging, wouldn't you mentally blame the unit of measure? Heck, there is nothing really sacred about a gallon of milk. It is just alot more convient bottle than the 2L. There are annoyances about the gallon jug being too big for kids to successfully pour by themselves. God, I know by experience on that one.
Actually, the 1L soda bottles are kinda of nice. They are a great single serving size.
I guess that's the problem though. Everything in the US likes to be a whole number, which doesn't convert very well usually. Getting people to accept something is difficult.
I hate it when they try to make personal computing into a SERVICE rather than a PRODUCT. Internet access is a service, but word processing is not. I, for one, would like to keep it that way.
Actually, I wouldn't mind if I had really good options. I'd pay $20 a year (maybe even a month) to either MS, IBM, Sun, Novell, or Apple if I'd get an Office suite that has atlease e-mail client, word processor, spreadsheet, a simple front-end building database tool, a strong simple robust backend database, a great photo viewer, a photo editor that is as good as PSP, a media viewer that can play any digital video, a good video editing solution, CD/DVD burning software, complete spam guard, no spyware at all, daily streaming updates if needed and one security problem a year. Oh all those products should be compatible with industry standards. IBM could do it. Actually, I think that they've already done parts of it. Only problem with them is you have to be a business and buy an IBM server for $XXXK and a $XXK year service contract. IBM is not for consumers; IBM is for business. I find $20 a year affordable. I would think anything more would be too much to pay. Then again they should just pair up with a telephone company and bill it as a $5 a month service/tax.
I would hate you forever if you got rid of a gallon of milk. 2 liter soda bottles are very annoying in the refigator. I wouldn't want to have to have 4 2 liter bottles of milk that would too be evil.
I agree with your theory. I would still hate you forever though if it got implemented.
Sure you could use them for target-practice and such, but that doesn't change the fact that killing is what they are meant to do.
Then "duck hunt" or "deer hunter" are nothing less than training to kill ducks and deer. These games should no longer be sold because they train people to shoot animals, which is morally wrong.
