Hell, I'm not even sure HOW MANY domains I have, much less what they are. Now think of all the web consultants and how many domains they must have registered and are contacts for.

the company i worked for maintained a database of all the domain names registered, where they were registered from, how much the cost was, when it expired, which business unit owns the name (pays the cost of if), etc, etc. the tech. contact was the billing contact, and they would get the bill, verify with the business that the domain was still needed, and then submit the bill to accts payable to cut a check. I'd imagine a decent web consultant could just keep this kind of stuff in a spreadsheet.

i can see in a small business maybe someone else maybe opening the mail, but then they would probably be in contact with the actual system admin about it. in a meduim to large size business, mail that is addressed to "John Doe, DNS Administrator" goes to John Doe's mail box. Someone at the Director/VP level might have their mail gone through by the administrative assistant, but not the DNS Administrator whos job it is to register the names and maintain the servers that serve those domains.

don't most domain name holders know who they registered with, when their time expires, and who their options are for renewal? isn't it normally a tekkie who handles the domain name administration for a company? if they really wanted to be sneaky, they'd send it to the administrative assistant to the VP of operations. this isn't any more sneaky than the 5-50$ check that AT$T sends in the mail where they switch your long dial phone service if you cash it.

I think you need to learn a little about optimization and speed issues.

    i would never discount that.

The game will spend most of it's time in the speed critical section - that's why it's speed critical - but that section will not make up much of the code for the application.

so, the code that executes when i'm moving my arrow key/joystick whatever to move the little guy arcross the hilly 3D terain trying to capture the coins or whatever while basically running all over the place... that's not speed critical code? maybe just the rendering of all that crap? is that speed critical?

You did realise that Java can take on the native look and feel and become completely indistinguishable to native apps right? :)

could you point me to one that I could evaluate? like i said, i haven't seen one yet.

  18. Re:Why bother? on Platform Independent Gaming? · · Score: 2

first, what are non speed critical sections of a game? the splash screens, setup menu? the actual playing area, which I'm hoping is a majority of the game is speed dependant. they tend to heavily use the processors available, and any they can get their hands on (video, CPU, audio, etc).

next, on the java speed issue. you claim it to be fact that java is fast enough for a very significant percentage of games produced. the actual fact is that a very insignificantamount of games are actually produced by java. i'd say the game producers are most likely choosing the right tool for the right job here. after all, we all know that java development is much faster than C/C++ or assembly development, eh? A java game would be much more attractive to a game manufacturer, but which ones are doing it? I think a few may have behind closed doors, and the results were not plesant. When I see a java game produced which works as well or better than a C/C++ alternative, I'll believe that Java is fast enough for gaming. Nearly all java GUI applications (games are gui's no?) I have seen are useable but no where near their counterparts in terms of ease of use, and general responsiveness.

if they say on the mailing list that it's gcc3 compat, why don't the put it in the docs somewhere? as a comparison, some people have gotten the ati radeon 8500 cards to work using the gatos drivers, but... the driver authors aren't labeling it as supported. there's been changes in the code to accomadate the card, but it's not ready for mainstream.
