  1. google revenue stream on Yahoo! Launches Pay-Per-Search · · Score: 2

Google's main revenue stream is from licensing its searcing technologies. It's most certainly the best search technology, but I have to wonder how solid that revenue stream is, and how long it can last. I know I wouldn't mind ad viewing for my google searches, but ads don't even provide a good revenue stream these days (do they ./?). Google or any search engine could start (or maybe already is) tracking the types of things people search for in a session, maybe requiring logins.. and then selling that information to those marketoids and information analysts.

TRUST IN THE DEVELOPERS! checkin/checkout. this works for nearly every other project out there and i can't understand why it can't work at all for the kernel.

that said, the kernel also could use a solid testing environment. a load of dedicated testing hardware, setup with testing scripts that build the new kernels, and run extensive tests on them. testing is a huge key to success in any SD project, and the kernel is no different. maybe this exists now, and i'm just not aware of it, but i'm guessing it doesn't as i don't see the issues in 2.4 arising with better testing and an ACTUAL DISTRIBUTED system. i don't think the blame can come on Rik at all, it's mainly the system. all code comes through one person?!? maybe in version 1.x when the userbase was much much less, but not in a project this size/scope where boxed version of the software are being sold in wall-mart stores and IBM is running commercials about how linux is replacing server farms. linux, welcome to the big league, let's try to play ball like the pro's do, eh?

I think that lots of times the "younger" people pay less attention to politically corectness, feel-good warm overs, and the such. Linus seems very similar in his interviews. Linux seem to be more of a get the job done kinda person, but sometimes shoves off any politically touchy questions. Rik definately wants to get the job done, but also doens't hesitate to speak up when he sees an issue. Now.. will anyone listen seriously? Guess we'll have to wait and see.
