Why you would run Windows on top of Linux, given...there are now FOSS alternatives for almost anything Windows can provide

Even if that were true, in practice companies don't just swap out production environments because alternatives potentially exist. What works well for you may be problematic in even a slightly different environment. Others have mentioned apps for which OSS interoperability isn't there yet, and I'd add Group Policies and other AD centric tech to the list (although I admittedly haven't checked out recent versions of Samba lately, so maybe I'm wrong on that). I'm as big of an OSS advocate as there is, but part of advocating effectively is knowing where limitations exist and dealing with them rationally rather than sugar-coating them. I agree with the gist of what you're saying though, and there are a lot of shops that could lower TCO by exploring the alternatives.

I know just what you mean dude. It's like when my wife tries to buy me a 12-pack of beer at the store, and I'm forced to scoff at her naivete. Why would anyone buy beer in a convenient pre-packaged form when you can just as effectively brew your own? All you need is a huge pale, a siphon, a hydrometer, malt, hops, yeast, sugar, and water. It couldn't be simpler, really. I know that some pansies use fancy 'Microbrewery Kits', but that runs counter to the true spirit of the home-brew community if you ask me. The best part of course is that it's legal to give away your home brewed beer without paying royalties to Heineken or Guinness.

Your paraphrasing skills need some work. This isn't what was stated or implied.

Do they have to take it to the point of saying 'there can be only one'?

What you're (intentionally?) leaving out is that they're referring to enterprise linux market 'players'. How many players are there now? Two by my count, but I'm not counting offerings such as Unbreakable (or even Ubuntu LTS) unless/until they gain meaningful traction in the market. I think RH is saying that they see the MS/Novell deal as the beginning of the end of Enterprise SuSE. Are they right? Who knows. Are they beating their chest? Probably. Regardless I think it's a stretch to claim that they're playing Highlander.
