Then I doubt not only that it had an impact I doubt the 100k figure as well. I bet it was more like 10k people trying to download it 10 different times from different sources looking for something other than a crappy camcorder download.
I have to agree, and I can honestly say I have never pirated so much as a single TV show or movie but this is becoming ridiculous. The strangle hold that media companies have on content needs to be broken. They are trying to force us into maintaining their status quo instead of actually innovating and giving the consumer what they actually want an will pay for happily. At this point I think that pirating is starting to look like the reasonable alternative.
This is true of people in general. We all see the train wreck but everyone wants to just keep things as close to the same as possible so that we can stay comfortable. Most people pushing for change have already been run over by the train. The train wreck pretty much has to happen before more than those run over are willing to do anything about the actual situation because once the train wrecks then they too are uncomfortable. This is pretty much the way the entire world functions and various macro and micro levels.
It would be great if more people would get into this sort of competition. It combines some skill with a lot of talent just like other sports just less physical. I see the need for physical sports too obviously but think of how far we could go if we devoted even 1% of the energy we spend on other sports onto something like this.
On one hand I feel bad for big box stores as they hire a lot of people and maintain a lot of stores across the US so they seem like things we need in our economy. On the other hand the suck....hard. I hate going into Best buy because I feel like I have to carry a "No solicitors" sign around with me....and use it like a bat to keep the sales people at bay. They give bad advice, have questionable customer service (though I do like their return policies) and bad prices in general. I understand their prices to an extent as they need to pay their employees and keep their stores going so I'm willing to overlook it when reasonable but they tend to offer no redeeming value.
The problem is people are only willing to do the minimum necessary to get by and unwilling to take drastic measure without drastic circumstances. The problem with things like our world dependence on oil is that by the time those drastic circumstances come about, it will be too late. We simply can't grow food and ship it right now without oil and when oil starts really running out it will be a drastic change and we will be years away from any sort of solution.
I like your optimistic perspective but I'm not sure I'm willing to bet everything on....don't worry everything will just workout in the end.
The real reason that this has come up now is that they added a male-male relationship. For years now you could romance Liara, while she is an alien she is undeniably some sort of female looking alien and that was ok. Because as a society we have decided female on female stuff is ok or at least ignorable but this male on male stuff is icky and thus the fundamentalist morons have to get all up in arms.
Once proven CP free they will release then for normal use...and then reimpound them because they might have become infected while not under the safe watchful eye of the Government!
Is that the general electorate is distracted by side issues. It's all about my team versus their team, who cares that the teams are nearly identical and neither even talk about the real issues at hand. We're all too distracted by the "things I don't like versus the things you do like" stuff that can't even manage to figure out that we need to get new leadership all around. Start a new movement like Occupy or the Tea Party and it gets co-opted by the existing structure without anyone even noticing.
But I think the take away is still that you can at anytime be searched regardless of you having actually done anything wrong. They don't have any burden of proof in this situation they can arrest you on any trumped up charge and then do whatever they want to you till they can come up with something they can make stick.
We combine this with a cure for obesity and we will be living in some very interesting times indeed....smoking and binging and purging will become a new pass time for quite a few I think.
The problem is we need other people to run for elected positions AND get enough attention to get elected. The problem we have right now is the us vs them mentality in which the majority of people have their "team" and they just vote for their team regardless. Trying to get a third party in there is like trying to start up a new team and that requires people to change teams, so you need to spread a message that pulls them away and you will only get but so many. We need to get rid of parties entirely before we can really make any progress.
Its the name Windows, it sounds old and tired to most people. Even if the phone version has nothing to do with the desktop. It just doesn't sound sexy. People hear windows phone and they picture some old Chevy truck sitting on the lawn on blocks.
I actually think they took a bold option. They didn't have a lot of options and none that great but they took one of the boldest options they had. Partner with MS and hope the platform takes off, if it does they win big....it's a bet that so far they are losing but who knows. It might have been a bigger/bolder risk to strike it off entirely on their own but I think that option would have been an even bigger failure. They would have needed to replicate both iOS and Android's success all over again on their own to make that one work.
Blackberry decided not to take any steps it seems...lets just keep doing what we always have...they'll come back...
I think everyone is reading this as an assessment of weather stupid people know they're stupid. The problem is I don't think its so much about "stupid" people as it is about people making judgements in areas for which they have no/little understanding. So someone may be a perfectly intelligent person but they don't have much of an understanding is physics so they can't identify a person with actual knowledge of physics versus one who is merely good at making things up.
By fixating on who is or is not "stupid" we are missing the point. If a topic is an important topic for a current vote we should be taking the time to do some self learning before listening to the candidate's ideas. The article essentially says that people anoint themselves as being knowledgeable (enough) to make decisions even though they are not.
Which can end up being similar to lectures at times. I use the notes app to be able to take notes, attach pictures and videos to the notes etc. It's like a super-notebook and helps me keep track of things better. I think out right banning is short sighted and if people are not taking their classes seriously and failing then that is sort of their fault no? This isn't elementary school we're talking about here.
The problem is Media companies are in a large way driving people to these services. As a legit consumer of stream media I am constantly frustrated by how limited or non-existent my options are when I want to watch a particular show. I'm more than willing to pay for things I watch but many times there's simply NO WAY to do it at all. I haven't used illegal streaming but I can totally understand why someone would. Movies without 20 minutes of mandatory previews, all TV shows up right after they air and for any time after, who wouldn't want that?
They sit there and try and squeeze every last dime out of a show instead of opening up and seeing if trying a new technique will possibly even get them more profit. They are also trying to make sure everything still costs way more than it needs to, "sure that 10 year old bluray needs to cost $25, it's bluray and that's harder to make". They are so busy trying to stuff the genie back in the bottle they aren't even trying to make wishes. I know some people are just cheap bastards and looking for free content but others are just looking for a convenient service and the free is just a bonus.
Then I doubt not only that it had an impact I doubt the 100k figure as well. I bet it was more like 10k people trying to download it 10 different times from different sources looking for something other than a crappy camcorder download.
Timmy: *Cough* Siri, go get help
Siri: Ruff
Dispatcher: What is it girl? Is Timmy hurt?
What are we going to do today?
Brain: What we do everyday Pinky.....try to take over the world!!!
Thank god inappropriate relationships never occurred pre-facebook. All we have to do is get back to the good old days....
You'll also be personally held responsible for the relative intelligence of your students.

You've got my vote, I think your plan sounds like the best I've heard. It makes total sense that its a public matter.

Come relax, talk amongst yourselves...here I'll give you topic, "My neighbor is a dissident and here is his address"
