Used to be one of the "TV as background noise" folk. Just over a year ago I "discovered" the Slingbox. Big, BIG difference in the amount of hours my TV is on, yet, almost no change in the amount of TV I "actively" watch - talk about oxymorons. It's so much easier to hit "alt-tab" and focus on the "TV" for a few seconds/minutes than turn around and lean to see the real TV. Saving on electricity as well...
900 is the future? You, like me, must be in North America. My Japanese friends would be crying in their cups of hot sake if their speeds dropped to such a low level.
Just wanting to be unknown does not mean you are necessarily a black hat. Not everyone craves attention, some people do it - hacking - "because it's there". I have in the past - think Bitnet and e-mail addresses that!went!just!like!this - publicized stuff for friends who did not want/need the attention, but, who felt that knowledge had to be set free.

Of course. Well, except for the fact that corn was no known in the old world at the time of JC's walkabouts.
Not the diesel you buy at the pump anyway. It runs on heavy fuel oil, which is... almost a different thing altogether. As for starting it, If I remember correctly, they use some kind of compressed air starter. (I am not an marine diesel engineer, but, I remember talking to a friend who is. My memory is not what it used to be, so... grain of salt usage might be prudent.)
I think you are forgetting that, as usual, Apple LEADS. So, once again, MS is just joining a party already in progress. Also, as usual, IMHO, since they already know what everybody at the party has been drinking, they can bring the best koolaid. Sure, some will complain that it's just the Apple koolaid that has some food dye in it, but, everybody will rush to drink it anyway.
(Append:-) or:-( depending on your position vis-à-vis Apple vs. MS and the whole DRM issue.)
Of course it is. But I always log in as root, 'cause if I don't the system always bitches about "Only root can do that." Never used to have this problem in Windows.:-)
The lucky stiff got a brand new G klasse - a Brabus tweaked G500 to be precise. Well, he works for himself and just got through a painful divorce, so, he needed something to soothe his pain. (I think I will get married, just so that I can get a divorce... and have an excuse to spend 150 thou on a car.)
The best thing about this is that since he is VERY busy I'll get to drive it a lot... while I fix my own, cheap ass, G - an old, 1986, GD300.
Except, of course, in Japan "bonus" is a misnomer. Basically, there you have a yearly income dolled out in twelve monthly parts and two "bonuses". It sucks, and for the MANY years I worked there I made sure to have contracts that don't follow their, IMHO, silly system. I believe I am a better manager of my money than the company is; It worked out REALLY well for me. YMMV, and all that.
...and batteries and flowers and umbrellas and underwear and sexy edible underwear and rice and vids and manga and porn and booze and... I could go on and on and on and on...
Most ex Soviet block countries are in the same situation... Is there a solution? Not in the short term. Long term, it will stabilize, just as it did after the "robber baron era" in the west. IMHO, of course.
Err... just because you are paranoid, it doesn't mean they are not out to get you.
I am not Russian, nor do I have any connection to Russia. I do however still have friends and family in another Eastern European country. I thought I had half a clue as to how things were there... I went back a couple years ago and was VERY VERY surprised. Forget what you read in the news, even the reliable news sources don't get deep enough. And those that do... don't surface.
I have no doubt that Russia is just as bad, if not worse. Shrug.
There was a time, years ago, when CD/DVD archival made sense. These days when the HD prices are so low, I just don't see the benefits.
I have a box sitting in my friend's "office" in a different country - could just as easily be in a friend's house in a different town...as long as it's not in an area that is likely to be hit by the same disaster as your home. Currently, in addition to the drive the OS is on, it has a mirrored pair of 700 GB drives - this is enough for _MY_ current needs. It holds compressed ISO images of CDs/DVDs - stuff I used to burn in the past.
I have an "identical" setup here - same amount of storage space, different OS and hardware; eggs... basket > 1.
So, every time I would normally burn a CD/DVD I do so to an image which then gets copied to the local and the remote archive servers. Makes management WAY easier for me. For example, until recently I used to have 250GB drives in the mirror. I plugged in the two new drives, initialized the mirror, copied the data over, removed and re-purposed the older drives. WakeOnLan makes sure that the remote box is only powered when I actually need to push new data on to it; saves power and wear and tear. I find I only archive stuff about once a week or even less. This is NOT my backup server, it's the archive server, completely different purpose.
A couple years ago I spent some time in Romania. It was common among some of my acquaintances to remove the batteries from their GSM phones when discussing "sensitive" issues. It was well known that eavesdropping was possible.
Now it's news?
Shrug.
Couple months ago I was turned back because I had "too many small screwdrivers", and I looked "smart enough to use them". I am NOT making this up.
I was driving across...
BG: What do you do? Me: I am a network engineer in Tokyo BG: So you work with computers. Me: Sometimes. BG: You have a lot of tools. Me: I drive a 20 year old car... carrying tools is the smart thing to do. BG: You have to many small screwdrivers. Me: Huh? BG: You could use these to work on computers with. Me: I am a network guy, I do software. BG: You look smart enough that you could fix hardware. Me: Huh?
Of course, the next day, after having thrown all my tools from the nice aluminium case they are usually packed in into a canvas bag, I crossed without any major issues.
There is also the possibility that since he's already famous for doing it, or at least releasing it, for the first time, some people use him as a "clearing house" for releasing anti-copy hacks. You know, it's that thing about a good hacker being a famous hacker, and a great hacker being a totally unknown hacker...
Some people value their privacy/jobs/etc more than the "fame" they would get from being "the one".

I think he meant that all the stuff in that account was spam, as he's bouncing spam only to that account. So, almost 1GB a week ...
It's their way of trying to fight back against Darwin and his silly theories.
Whoosh???

Hear, hear. (Including the fact that they screwed me out of half a year worth of mags.)
That's why any publication worth its salt would beam the contents to a local "print shop" and have it distributed locally. As far as I know, anyway.
