You know how "no one gets fired for buying IBM/Microsoft/etc" works? Well, it's, mostly, the same way of thinking with the degree requirements; "he had a degree in X, so..." In most cases it's a CYA measure. Shrug.
I am not sure why you got modded funny. But, then again, this _is_ slashdot.
The best IT project manager, bare none, I had the pleasure of working with was indeed unable to program anything, save, perhaps, his VCR. That didn't stop him from having an amazing grasp on the projects; his projects always were, on time and on budget. Yes, I do mean always, and, yes, it could well be it's also because he knew how to select his projects.
Also, although being the sole non-programmer - except for the accounting and HR people - in the last company I worked for - largish outfit, most of you have heard of - I was sought after to help debug Java and SQL programming issues. Being a "programming moron" helped... by the time the programmers were half way through getting me to understand what they were trying to achieve they would go "I got it, I got it. Thanks, you saved us untold hours..." (Truth being told, I can actually do both Java and SQL, but, they didn't need to know that; besides, my skills in both were, and are, significantly lower than the rest of the crew.)
I could be wrong, but I am not aware of any vulnerabilities in SpeakFreely - http://www.speakfreely.org./ So, if you are worried about people intercepting your calls.. there are solutions. And, yes, it does run on Linux, or, if not, the source is there...
rule number 3: Just because they are blabber mouthed lunatics, it doesn't mean they are always wrong. (Remember the old church clock... even though it's broken, it still shows the right time twice a day.)
I was just talking to a few of my friend - yes, I know it's a small sample - but EVERY single one I talked to said they would buy this car if it was priced the same as, or, perhaps, just slightly above a hybrid. I would too, and I bet a lot of people feel the same. (No, I would not give up my GD300, but I would need drive it way less.)
You are so right. I have six CC, two each of Visa, MC and Amex. In the last 15 years I have not paid one cent of interest. Not one.
I can't understand people who complain about CCs. Adjust your lifestyle damn it, and don't give the banks your hard earned money.
As far as I am concerned the ONLY reason to pay interest on your CCs is if you had a REAL emergency, and you can't afford to pay it when the deadline comes. In my case, even in a situation like that I would not pay interest on my CCs; with my credit rating I can easily get a much lower interest loan from my bank.
Disney? LUXURYYYYY!!!!
When I am at one of my friend's place it's always Spongebob something. If I had to go through that all the time I would become even more unhinged. Quickly too.
It all depends on Mark, doesn't it. If he puts _his_ principles before _his_ wallet, he can always "walk" when the situation is no longer suitable to the way _he_ feels. Based on the fact that people are aware of who he is, and what he can do, I don't think it would be too hard for him to set up a "son of..." company as soon as he is free again.
Also, using only one OS prevents you from using "best of breed" software; yes, believe it or not, there are certain VERY GOOD applications that don't run on Linux. How about legacy stuff that is just not replaceable, yet dedicating a whole box to them would just be too much.
Virtualization DOES have its place. IMHO, and all that.
I, basically, want the same things, but, I also want a tiny house on a big lot, or a VERY well insulated apartment. I sleep at very odd hours, and like hard rock... I am sure many of my current neighbours are not too fond of my vintage McIntosh speakers; regardless of the sweetness of the sound pumped through them by my OLD Sansui amp. Some people just...are that way.
I vote for Microsoft with their... wallet. A fat one.
If it were anyone but the cartels I would feel sorry for them. MS is going to game them so well, by the time they realize what is what it's going to be to late.
Come Christmas I am going to be in a bit of a difficult position... who do I cheer for?
Weather good, or bad, we all reap what we sow. Shrug.
I have a.11b AP on a separate VLAN on my Linksys running dd-wrt; SSID "notsecured" and I give it enough bandwidth to do e-mailing and some light surfing. I hope no one does anything naughty, but, I am aware I am taking a risk. I have all my stuff backed up off site, and nothing illegal on any of my boxes; so, if cops do come and seize stuff, all I get is to be temporary inconvenienced. As I said, shrug.
Cops are not exactly brain-dead; not all of them anyway. So, if they find a "OPENNETWORK" SSID, I would guess they would clue in as to the intent... and drive on. At worst, they might try to contact you to point out the possible pitfalls...
Cops used to come to my house all the time. I would say AT LEAST three or four times a year. They asked me if everything was fine, point out that since my apartment was on the ground floor I should make sure I lock my balcony door, etc, etc.
I was OK with it. I was also OK with the fact that although these guys knew I spoke Japanese quite well, they never said anything to the traffic or parking cops who would sometimes hassle me - with good reason, might I add. They would just enjoy the show of my pretending not to speak any Japanese or English - and ALWAYS, as in 100%, getting away with it. They sometimes even "helped" their colleagues, just to make it that much harder for me not crack up. Oh, did I mention this was in Japan? Guess I hadn't.:-)
For many of my American friends it is hard to believe, but, NOT all cops are bad guys. In fact, quite the opposite; in my experience anyway. (Except the NIS guys from a certain MCAS, that shall remain nameless. NONE of those guys had a sense of humour.)
How about thinking ow the WGA as the "anti-killswitch." Now can you see how it could disable it? For all you know, the disable code is already running on your box.
Having said that, I VERY much doubt they will do it. Why? Simple, the "bad guys" would figure out what is what and turn off XP installs en masse. It's not something MS would want to chance.
My $0.20.
Remember when a few years ago the satellite company "killed" a lot of hacked cards? A bit of "innocuous" code at a time might just get through with other "security" updates. Problem solved. No?
Agreed. But, the reading level of Joe Sixpack is quite a lot lower than required to actually UNDERSTAND what's being read, so ... :-(

Of course you would be fired. As you should. (One gives the admins good stuff, and there is nothing better than BC bud.)

I think you were looking for ... pedantic.
(not that I disagree with your point, but this IS /. after all.)
Hyenas laugh too, that does not make them human. ;-)

I agree with you, but, yes there is always a but, not everyone is as "lucky" as you to have a Wal-mart in the neighbourhood.

Would that not depend on the person he is? I mean, just because in Montreal there are a million things to do, it doesn't mean he is doing any of them.

In other words, "finally the cartels have met their match". It should be interesting ...

They could not destroy organized religion. God would not allow that. ;-)
Should have mentioned I am in Canada ... Celsius here. ;-)
