THIS! Seriously, this is the biggest thing that irks me with Unity! I know it's small fry but damn it really gives me the shits trying to grab those scroll bars! Yes, I know mouse wheels exist but I still want my normal bloody scroll bars back!
Cmon, be kind, It's a $250 laptop for Christ sake. I think we can allow an exception for the 1366x768 res in this case. HOWEVER, I still find it ridiculous to see the same resolution on laptops 3 times the price, especially since my 10+ year old thinkpad rocks 1600x1200. Oh god, don't get me started on how useless screen resolution is these days.
Proper indexing (0-9, A-Z, by genre) and Libreoffice Calc/Excel will go a long way! At least if you need to import your data into SQL or something, you can easily do it from an spreadsheet.
Also some proper shelving that isn't too deep will go a long way to ensure all the spines are visible. If this sounds too low tech for you, then go ahead and print out your QR or Barcodes.
I've moved from PHP to working with Perl and I couldn't be happier. I've even started creating graphical applications (using tk) to support some of my web based apps (created in PHP) and I couldn't be happier! Yet I am the kind of person who can't wrap my head around Python, Haskell or Rails no matter how hard I try!
1996, I was 13 and in Year 7. Typing classes, word processing and programming in Cobalt. I used to think it was funny changing the PSU to 110v from the native (in Australia) 220-240v and then wait for someone to switch the PC on and then I'd watch that sucker smoke! Oh, and frequently putting chewing gum in one of the daisy chains of the 10baseT coax which would in turn bring all of the PC to a screeching halt since none of the PC had hard drives and were all PXE booting off an NT server!
"I’ll never forgot the nights spent tailing the access_log and celebrating a line from microsoft.com or mit.edu with friends like Jeff, Dave, Nate and Kurt."
I can only imagine some of the memories you have of running this site but I can see that one as being something special. That kinda speaks to me and I bet there are a bunch of nerdlingers like myself who would love to have memories like that!
You're almost right. It's usually 1 - 2 years you're on a bridging visa whilst your PR gets approved (bridging visa usually entitled you to work and gain a blue medicare card so you can claim medical benefits...really!)
After that point your PR gets approved, you're free to apply for Citizenship whenever you like. But to be honest, the Citizenship only gives you the option to vote and I think that's about it.
I have spoken to a fair share of ex-Foxconn workers as I am regularly in Shenzen and whilst you read all the stuff about the things that happen in the Apple factory, it's not that bad for every factory within Foxconn.
It's my understanding that Apple merely "rents" space and machinery from Foxconn and that the management and everything else is outsourced. Whether this is a request from Apple or Foxconn I have no idea but it's a bit more settling knowing that not every Foxconn factory is the same.
I bought an iPad ages ago, was cool for a few weeks and then it went into the draw. Thought I would try my luck with an Samsung GTab 10.1 and after a few months, went in the draw, and now i have the Nexus7 and it goes everywhere with me.
The moral of this? Different stroke for folk. Mind you, Tim's comments regarding the iPad accounting for x amount of web traffic holds absolutely no water as a fair share of these tablets are used in schools (usually with their web browsers uninstalled) or people who know how to effectively use them AS a tablet and not a web browser.
You know, kinda, like, test anything new in the wild before going ahead and fulfilling an order?? Some purchasing manager is about to have a very bad fiscal year!
Don't be so quick to judge in regards to who loves it or not. Don't get me wrong, I hate! I run xfce and xmonad but you know, thats how I roll. But when I introduce people to Ubuntu and Unity (usually people with minimum interests in the working of PC's), they love it.
Remember, not everyone works with 10 or 20 applications open at the same time, let alone 6 or 8 active windows on one screen (at least!!). Most people don't even use keyboard shortcuts other than ctrl-{z,x,c,v}!
Whilst listening to communities is one thing, sadly your Mum, Dad, Uncle, Auntie and your friends who actually have more of a life from the PC than we do don't participate on said forums. I wish they did. I bet the Gnome Devs wish they did also, that way they could build an DE that appeals right down to the lowest common denominator.
Just remember, the humble PC isn't just for nerdlingers, it's for people in all frames of work and play.
All you need is a waterproof box, a shovel and some accurate GPS co-ordinates. It's waterproof so you should be safe from a flood. It's outside so you should be safe from an house fire and it's underground, so you'll be safe from any break-in's!

This! Mind you, I hear not many people like Perl :)
Isn't that why functions/subs were invented? :)

"Still, he could've been more communicative"
You try step out of a balloon at 39km above the earth and try communicate properly! I certainly would've needed many layers of underwear!
That was bloody amazing to watch :)

Yep, I was a jerk!
You just convinced me to pacman -S xchat after all these years :)

Happy 15th
Don't hate on Rails! They could have coded it in PHP instead!
Firstly, The founder capped himself and Secondly, they're taking far too long on the product itself to get it to the open market.
But under the circumstances of what happened to Zhitomirskiy, I think it's understandable.

As much as I like wobly windows and what not, I try to stray away from CCSM. (yep, same probably here using macbook with intel gfx)
Using xfce 4.10 with no issues on 12.04 with no CCSM with xfce compisiting turned on.
Otherwise referred to as "Link Bait"!!

Find yourself a Delorean (or Train! :)), Flux Capacitor and some plutonium (or a Mr Fusion! :)) and we're in business!
Having sex in Sweden with an someone who was connected with the CIA can get complicated!
Regardless to say, breaking international treaties for not wearing a condom makes no sense me to!
All I need is a terminal and we're in business!
