Yes their are many many sites that have very similar problems, but in my opinon (and from the looks of it many others too), a site that is intended for a world wide audince should make considerations for the wold.

If msnb.com (or insert site here) wants to do some funky magic to make a site that might not work on my Kongueror or Mozilla browser that is fine with me I will just not go to that site after all many sites have news. It is when the offical site for the 2002 olympic winter games makes no considerations for even things such as language devides I feel it is wong.

Just my 2 cents though I suppose

You make a good point that it can be turned off, but how many "normal end users" of Microsoft products are going to know this. It is not you or I, or for that matter anyone on /. (for the most part ;}) that I am worried about here. It is the people that do not have the first clue about computers, or security, and think that AOL is the internet that I am concerned about with security issues such as this one (and the countless others).

I hope our friends over at Microsoft do not try to stuff the ballot box on this one as they have in the past

In a surprise move the Mysql group has named their mascot "MS rules, use Microsft SQL server".

    Very odd this will be.

This may have already been posted, and if it has sorry, but I thought this may be of interest to some of you.

Jean-loup Gailly (one of the creators of gzip) has written an article on a patent that was granted for compression of truly random data, and how it is not mathematically possible. You can read it here for those that are interested.

While I do not agree with all of the searches and invasions of privacy that have begin in the country, you have to keep in mind were you work.

If I worked at the National Institutes of Heath I would expect to be searched due to the threat of a biological attack and all. If I worked at Burger King or something of the like though I would be a bit more tense if they searched me every time, but that is just my 2cents.

    (b) ... is protecting the Telco systems any kind of priority in relation to the necessary defense of life and peace of mind?

I would say protecting the Telco network is very important in both the defense of life and peace of mind.

I say this because think of the first thing ' military forces' hit in a conflict, communications systems ... Cut off the enemy from the enemy and cause massive confusion.

If we make the Telco network an easy system to 'take off line' -- not just voice, but the data that travels over this as well -- then we are *possibly* asking for trouble, because we rely on the Telco network in this country a bit more then we all think, me thinks

  13. for now on CS vs CIS · · Score: 1
As of right now it dose seem that both CS and CIS people are getting hired for the same positions. *BUT* the one thing we must keep in mind is that the economy (at least in the US) is changing, companies are no longer going to be just giving IT people money, they are going to start looking at who is better for the job, this will give you as the CS major an upper hand --- more education = more money.

Also keep in mind when it comes time for promotions and such you will be more qualified, or at least have more education.

In short I would say stick with it, don't drop down to get out of school faster, you will have the rest of your life to work make school count.
