I have said this before but this is a good book (in my opinion of course):
The Practice of System and Network Administration This is a very good book covering many good processes and procedures in systems admining and the what not. I would recommend this book to any one working in the field. It covers everything from good practices in setting up a data center to good tips in dealing with Users.
Well they kind of did... they helped IBM with os/2 for a bit and then decided Creating NT would be better. So I suppose on could say NT was created on its bastard half cousin or something:)
While this article does say some odd things (unix outdated etc, etc...) I would say over all it is not that bad. All it is saying is that Linux after much hype has not done that well on the desktop. Can anyone argue with that, I think we all know that it has not done that good. The article does say though that it is doing well in server space and has much backing in the area. I would say before jumping on the title of this article and the MS part of MSNBC read the article and see that it is just not that bad...
First I must say good work the the apache team, but the must stop and remind everyone the work is not done. Now this patch needs to be applied to all affected systems, now it is time for the SA's and the what not of the world to step up. Lets not forget this fact because even MS releases patchs sooner or later (ok later), but it seems that many boxes stay effected for ever due to bad admining on said MS box(en).

Back in me high school days I had the opportunity to go to a special computer training class for 2 hours a day for two years. It was a great experience that let me learn me a lot. The best part of it though was that the teacher was a young guy too and loved to play games. He actually talked the school into buying the parts for 20 some odd computers that were of good enough quality to play some fun games on. He was able to slip this buy as having the students put the computers together for a 'learning project'. The best part of this story though is that some of us would go out to the school at night to play much games over the school net connection, hell we even had a clan for Delta Force (this was a few years ago you can tell:)). O to be young again:)
Or maybe they are just proving that they are a company attempting to make money. Maybe they are not as open about things as Debian (I use that because that was in your post), but Debian is not a company... you see what I am getting at...

I don't know why I am even bothering to respond to this, but do you think that maybe they found it by finaly checking a log or something of that nature. Of course their are a million other ways, but hey that is only one.
well the releasing of api's can help alot, for both google and for other users. CNN business of all places had a story on this (you can see it here
One of the things it talks about in the article is how some users have incorporated the apis into new project already. It is kind of cool, you should check it out so you can see just how the API's and be successful.
Ok let me take on this remark because I think you are missing a few big points.
1) As other posters have pointed out most slashdot readers are much better at computers then normal users. For us offering no or little support is less of an issue (except when the network is down, even the most technical still love to bitch when something is down...).
2) Most any company that sets their mind to it can offer dial up, or other Internet services. It is not all that hard really as long as you have a few tech people that have a clue. What sets apart a good ISP (the S is for Service) for the rest is good tech support. When a customer calls and says I can not get my email or heaven for bid ebay is not working the tech on the phone needs to know how to 'make ebay work again'. Also in many cases those same support people that are making ebay work again are also the ones that are working with vendors (LEC's, hardware, data, etc) so one way or another they are needed in the organization anyway.
Those are only a few points, but I think you get the picture. O yeah I happen to work at an ISP so I do have a bit of real world exprieane on this one;)
Not trying to troll here but man (or women) if you don't like the quality then leave. That is the joy of living in world were you can make decisions. If you do decide to say though then don't complain about it because that just seems counterproductive no don't it
To me this looks to be the first true test of open source. Can a large scale project (do they get bigger the Linux?) survive while staying completely open for everyone to play with?
After reviewing the posts on linux-kernal and here on good-ol./ it seems that everyone has an opinion (much like a certain unable body part). I for one am in no way close enough to the situation to make those decision but I can say I hope it gets worked out, because as one poster stated: "... people are using Linux in banks, hospitals, billion dollar companies..."
If this turns into bad publicity for linux who knows what will happen to those customers. Maybe Sun and MS try to get back in selling their respective os's to the same customers touting their ability to control how it all works in a "corporate environment", because we all know how much at least MS would love to discredit linux and those that use it. And don't think this can't get bad because just a few minutes ago on "The Screen Savers" on "Tech T.V." (a very lame show By The Way) the host gave a little run down of this entire situation (a bad run down, but enough to make it look bad in the eyes of many managers I am sure).
To me the most interesting part of the entire story is how well the C64 webserver is holding up, I have seen much larger servers fail under the/. load.
AT 5:40 cst (about 30 minutes after story was posted) the site had couted 2002 hits on index page. It is bit slow though need to plug in that mach 5 card:) (if you know what that is then you can call your self a c64 user:))
1) it will a light version of MS SQL
2) if it is a light MS SQL that say an updgrade to the full fetured version would not say automaticly convert the systems file system the the full version as well.
Of course both are 100% assumptions as we know little to nothing about this system. But hey seems how we are assmuning things think about this
The new MS Windows can usa database filesystem and also can use a "regular" filesystem. Maybe it gives you the option on in stall to install on MS SQL server (bundled), 3rd party SQL server you purchase on your own, or just on a regular old FS.
See we really do not know... lets get facts before buring the whitch (that will come later:))
The demonstration version of Longhorn... displays a new type of task dock that can include everything from stock tickers to work group collaboration features.... That's the pane in Office XP that provides a list of most recently used files, or clipboard entries, or other frequently-accessed features.
Does this sound so very similar to any other Windomanages to anyone else. So often on slashdot I see comments regarding Linux needs to stop playing catch up to Windows, but now it seem that Windown is playing catch up to Linux in may errors:
- Security is now a hot iteam at MS
- The "new" task bar
Ok that is only a few and to clarify I am not saying that Linux is beating MS, but it does look that MS sees many good ideas with the work being done with Linux.
I am happy to see a project such as this come to life for the public to see. Even if some of the technology seems a bit far off, or even usless today, it is usefull for all of us to see new and inventive ways to use technology. After all todays bad idea could be tomorrows Microsoft.
I do not the case you are refering to, however I know it is not uncommon for stadius to put up a "blue screen" some were that the camera will be often during an event. They can then use this spot to rotate commercials during said event... not a bad idea in my opinion because lets face it they have to make money too.
Cutting out content however, no matter how small the content is, could be a very mad road to start going down however.
We only have wait until next year to start seeing Maxtix 2 ripoffs in every other movie. And then by this time in 2004 they wont be cool anymore either...
Well from the sounds of the "script Kiddie" seems to be safe in this one. If the sysadmins were able to go through the logs to find him/her/theim then do you night think they would have spent every hour they could stay awake doing this before they had to go home with a box in hand.
It seems that the wrong person is getting blamed here (kind of at least). Yes what the kiddie's did was bad, but the admins should have had half a brain to stop this, or at least slow it down (DDos attachs are much harder to just stop).
I have said this before but this is a good book (in my opinion of course):

Wow, we slashdotted one of the major Mac news sites
... o well the editors made me do it :)
well from the looks of it we did not slashdot a major Mac news site in a very fair way:
http://www4.macnn.com/macnn/articles/unixad.jpg
notie the www4 it would seem that we did not use the load balancer so much
Ok let me take on this remark because I think you are missing a few big points.

You also have to be looking for a job, it says so in the article.
staroffice will for one, there are others aswel.
This may have already been mentioned, and is a bit off topic but:
... It really very funny stuff.
Does anyone remember the Simpsons where you see the feds monitoring book buying habits?
Ok mod me off topic now I feel better.
