The Berman bill, ensured a copyright owner would not be liable for "disabling, interfering with, blocking, diverting, or otherwise impairing the unauthorized distribution, display, performance, or reproduction of his or her copyrighted work on a publicly accessible peer-to-peer file trading network, if such impairment does not, without authorization, alter, delete, or otherwise impair the integrity of any computer file or data residing on the computer of a file trader." Berman is expected to re-introduce the bill in this Congressional session. ®
Actually, it's possible. Something similar happened to the Canadian aeronautic industry after the Avro Arrow was cancelled... in that situation, it was mostly about the lure of US money, but people tend to go where the work is... if big tech companies pull out of the US because of oppressive conditions, will their workers follow, or drop their pants for food on street corners?
I've just finished playing with loads of Bluetooth gadgets - a CompactFlash Card for my PocketPC, a module for my cell phone, a PCMCIA card for my laptop, and a Bluetooth printer. All performed flawlessly, beyond my expectations.
Any effect on my 802.11b? Nope, nodda. Why? Because I'm one guy, and I'd need to push myself to use both networks to their limits at the same time. Perhaps the Bluetooth-802.11b interaction makes a difference at an office, but really... if it's that big o' thing, tell the Bluetooth guy to go stand in the corner (out of range):)
The fundamental difference between taxation of the record industry and agri industry: farmers receive money from directly from the government. Musicians don't.
Though I wish it were more the same... I wish the government would pay Britney Spears not to make an album this year.:)

I use MP3s because they're much like Interet currency.
I convert MP3s to WMAs when I want to squish music onto my PocketPC.
If I bought an OGG car player (if there is/was such a beast), I'd convert my MP3s.
The point: When in Rome, I do as the Romans. It's a simple life, really.:)
Because I don't want an endless stream of spam from Universal.
I won't buy a copy-protected CD. Not because I'm a pirate, but because they're inconvenient. I'd rather attend live shows, buy shirts, send money directly to bands, and live with the stigma of downloading mp3s.
CDs are plastic slabs, a medium for the message. Universal forgot they sell music, not plastic. Slabs that aren't convenient and won't actually play music on my hardware are... slabs.
This is a first, and it's a prototype, and I wouldn't want my gall bladder removed by a guy an ocean away drinking coffee, worrying about a building falling over... BUT...
Someday I may be in the Arctic...
Or on a plane
Or in space
Or whereever... the point isn't *how* it was done, the point is that we *can* do it...
The upside of global warming: You'll spend much more time at the lake.
The downside: "The lake" is Lake Agassiz.
Even worse, some parts of the ancient lakebed are still lower than Round 1: Lake Agassiz, due to glacial rebound.
I'm not saying a new Laurentide Ice Sheet will park itself in Hudson Bay to block water again, but I wouldn't trust rising water any further than I can drain it.:)

What's being served on this underwater flight, freshly-steamed halibut?
Canadians already pay a levy on blank cassettes and CDs. Fine, people who dispicably pirate have to use these media formats.
But most ISP account holders do not dispicably pirate. Why should they pay anything? Because the pirates use the Internet?
There's a few laws concerning "taxation without representation" that this would break in any country.
P.S. Hillary - You rock. No, really. You're my ongoing source of comedy in a dark world. You're the one that got away (from Darwin).

"It took us about a month to develop the complex hydra, and another month to bring it up to the standards of excellence that the RIAA demanded of us."
Are they anything like the standards of excellence used by the RIAA webmasters?
I *have* run Bluetooth and 802.11b in the same room. No problems, but I'm one guy, and can barely walk and chew gum. :)
But by the same argument, good luck trying to run 802.11b and a microwave.
Notice there are no crates or boxes in the real-life pic? :)
Just brutal, harsh reality.

Great running commentary, too, I'll bet...

Those "environmentalists" who quote their own "scientific research" to prove their own agendas.
Those "hard liners", who mirror the actions of the above environmentalists.
Those between, who explore concrete evidence, eon-ic scales, and logical conclusions, despite their pre-disposed subjectivity.
Too bad most scientists dealing with environmental concerns are part of the first two groups....
