  1. Information Yes, App's No on Microsoft Ex-Chief to Launch Web-Based Software · · Score: 1

I want my information easily accessible wherever I am, using whatever app. But that doesn't mean I want web apps.

So really I want universal formats and global easy to use syncing to any device, any os.

None of which we have, simply because business don't like or care about anything but themselves. Which is fine for making money, and some customers happy...it is never going to make everyone happy.

  2. It's the governments that's the problem on Are National ID Cards a Good Idea? · · Score: 1

This is based upon the UK version of id cards:

I don't mind the idea of id cards, or even the centralized database...the problem is that I don't trust the government to do this a) properly, honestly and within budget and b) with my best interests at heart.

If there was a centralized database then:
I should have 365/24/7 access (via web, phone and wap) to it, and maintenance of it (like my current address).

I should be able to see all details that the government has about me on it.

I should also be able to block everyone from accessing it without my express permission(only a minority of the police and security services should be exempt from this).

I should be able to see a record of everyone who's looked at or altered my details (again certain security services would be exempt).

Any updates by government agencies should also be strictly controlled - I should be told before the update is about to happen and what changes it contains (so that I can inform them of any fuck ups that they often make)

It is MY data, not the government's. Obviously when companies compile these databases it is their data, but the government works FOR me not the other way around.

Obviously this is never going to happen not while they insist on trying to nanny me and waste my taxes fighting terrorism, and letting in foreigners.

  3. I thought this was the 'proper' use? on Vista Firewall to be Crippled · · Score: 1

I've always thought that this was the original way of operating a firewall?
Surely if its blocking incoming AND outgoing its not a firewall its just a wall??

This makes sense considering originally you would be ok to trust outgoing connections seeing as you started them!

Obviously now they might not be trusted as much, but I would say that if a plain install of vista has things connecting to the outside without your express permission, then thats the bigger problem.

  4. Games are a cheap source of plots / universes on Why Game Movies Stink · · Score: 1

...and hollywood is too unimagintive to think of something original.

So the games provide all the bits needed for some muppet of a screenwriter (that never plays the game or would ever want to) to create a story from.

Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't.

With something like Tomb Raider (which has no real plot, or real character interaction) it was entirely up to the writers to make a story. the good/bad result cannot be be attributed to the game.

With Doom they were just chicken, they had a great oppertunity to take the Hell on Earth aspect (I want my bunny on a stake!), but made some aimless genentic accident movie (which Resident Evil had already done better).

The same could be said of Comic Book adaptions, but there its a lot lot worse when the movie screws it up, as it means they completely failed to properly read the damn books in the first place.

X-Men is the obvious success here, and Singer did the right thing took from the (massive and complex) universe and created a new one based upon parts of it. I don't think it could have been done well any other way.

  5. Re:why no xbox redesign? on The 360 Is Too Cheap? · · Score: 1

this is simple, they want you to use the game compability thingy in the 360.

They also need a much large market share if they are going to compete with the PlayStation...so they can't afford to make 'old' machines that aren't competetive.

However a redesigned 360 is more likely, given that the move to 65nm is happening and hddvd...I'd guess that once hddvd is more prevaliant we will get a 'new' 360 with HDDVD, bigger HD (that isn't bolted on like some ugly wart)!

I really wish it'd stop because our (the uk's) government is following suit, we already have a nanny for Prime Minister we don't want a parnoid one as well. Esp if he's going to waste my money 'fighting' terrorists.

Do people really think that porn/smut is bad for you? Your hands recover after a while;p

If there *had* to be a rating/censorship system then surely violence should be far far above porn?

But tbh any censorship of anything is just to cover up a fubar eductation system and bad parenting (that they will never admit too). And the censorship of the internet is just a futile waste of tax payers money

UMD was about putting software in the PSP, first and foremost. The fact that they never had plans to manufacture anything ELSE to play UMDs should speak for itself.

Universal Media Disk...that isn't, er well...Universal. Yea right...they thought they could get the studios to release umd's and dvd's and they thought the consumers would buy both. They didn't, so its dying (for movies).

Or are you trying to say, it was for the PSP but if for some bizare reason umd movies did really really well, then Sony would do more with it?

tbh I think its the weakest part of the psp, in terms of I thought anything on mine was going to break then the umd disc and loader would be it.

In an ideal world a .xxx(or similar, btw is 'xxx' universally reconized as indicating porn??) domain would work and would be a good simple catagorization. However for this to work, you would have to have everybody agreeing on what should or should not be in that domain, and then get everybody to enforce it.

This just isn't going to happen, ever.

Esp with the weird rules about who has the rights to a domain...we would quickly end up with nivida.xxx (does the 7900gtx turn you on more than the slim mx440?? !) or dhl.xxx (delivery fetishes;-)

AFAIK the best release of the Monty Python series is still the A&E Home Video one who are either American or Canadian (can't remember). This isn't the only case, a lot are poorly put together with a minimum of extras and care.

However I think Cory was a little harsh on the BBC, they do seem to be making more of an effort in distributing their content, far more than I see other media companies doing...like the fact that you can easily listen to past radio broadcasts, their work with theora/dirac, and multicasting (more at http://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/index.shtml)

    Or journalists protecting their sources?

Personally I don't think a government that uses censorship as a control method is going to work, as too much responsability is placed on such a few number of people.

I think some of people posting are far too naive and brainwashed into thinking that the 'west's' way of government is the only correct way. If its so great why does the slashdot comm continously post about the suffering with the Recording Industry Ass. of America and the Motion Picture Ass. of America and their crimilization of the public just to protect their outdated business models?
