I don't think it was that 2.6.1 supported the 103rd key, but that X doesn't. When I had 2.6.1 installed, X couldn't distinguish the key from the PrtScrn key, so there was no way to change the map file to support the key...

I must admit to being a little disappointed right now with my Gentoo installation. I saw the article here, ran an emerge sync, and 2.6.3 is still marked as unstable. I guess I'll have to wait 15 minutes before I can install it... ;)

On a slightly related sidenote, whichever developer it was who "broke" support for the 105th key (the "Europe" key) in 2.6.1 should be drawn and quartered. It took me forever to figure out why my tilde key wasn't working. I created a text file called tilde with the character in it so that everytime I needed a tilde, I could copy and paste it... 6. Re:Do NOT get Active noise cancellation! on Computers/Keyboards + Dorm Room = No Zzzzzz? · · Score: 1

You obviously don't understand active noise cancellation.

Sound travels in pressure waves. That's basic science, and you should know that. Let's assume the sound floor is currently set at the 1 atm level (atmosphere). If a sound comes in that zeroes at 1 atm, and peaks at 10 atm, active noise cancellation will create the exact opposite pressure wave, with a start at 10 atm, and reaches 1 atm when the original sound hits 10. Since we only hear frequencies, or rapid changes, our brain interprets this as not hearing a sound, but the pressure level has still been raised to 5 atm for the course of this sound! (That's the average value of the two waves).

Now, I should note that these numbers are completely made up, for simplicity, but the principle holds true. Active noise cancellation may be quiet, but it is not effect free on your ears, and can give you headaches, especially if the cancellation ends up slightly out of synch (which would give you very low or muffled noise levels, but a a very high pressure level)

  7. Do NOT get Active noise cancellation! on Computers/Keyboards + Dorm Room = No Zzzzzz? · · Score: 1

That's a TERRIBLE recommendation. Active noise cancellation raises the sound floor in order to cancel sound. This may be fine while you're awake, but it's the type of thing that can give you headaches, especially if one ear (of the headphones) becomes slightly skewed, and you end up getting the wrong signals. (Which will probably happen if you shift around at all during sleep). In addition, the cost of running those things 8 hours a day (night) gets to be ridiculous

  8. Recipe for a perfect Valentine's Day on What to Get My Geek for Valentine's Day? · · Score: 5, Insightful

It's pretty simple... V-Day is on a Saturday, which means no work (hopefully), so it's perfect.

Arrange ahead of time to take the first half of the day for V-Day, and let him have the second half. Take him to the nearest arcade, with $40-50 worth of quarters, or go-kart racing, follow it up with lunch at something cheap but not fast food (maybe Bennigan's or Chili's), then to a movie he wants to see (maybe The Butterfly Effect, or Cold Mountain, but you know better), and have popcorn and icees/slushies or that 128oz. monster size soda.

Next, let him take over, hopefully he'll have something planned for you (remember you arranged ahead of time, so that's a good reminder for him).

When you get back, he'll have had an incredible day, hopefully you'll have had an incredible night, finish it off by taking him home (your place or his), for some intimate time. Do something with him that you've never done before, whether that be letting him get to second base, or your first time having sex in the shower (or the kitchen table, washing machine, etc. ;) )

As for me? My gf and I are currently seperated by that little pond we call the Atlantic Ocean, so I'm having flowers delivered to her, as well as a DVD player (she doesn't have one yet), and the complete Family Guy collection (I know my girl). I'm going to pick up some candles, break out the webcam, and we're going to have a candlelit dinner some 2000 miles apart...

It's like how the gyms that require you to notify them in writing by snail mail to cancel your account. There's a reason why people have been taking them to court and winning, it's underhanded.

Unfortunately, it's not so easy to do something about. If you used a credit card (as opposed to a debit card), it should be relatively easy to get the charge cancelled, like mentioned in an earlier post. If not, stop by at your local court house and pick up a small claims form. Specify the amount as $70 (Xbox fee) + ~$100 (your time and effort coming to court), and most likely they'll refund it before the court date comes, or they won't even show up, which means you win by default. (It's not worth their money to fight it.)

Use the court system to your advantage, for once, and put them in the same positiion that they put small companies, i.e. the settlement is worth less than their legal fees... Total cost to you? Somewhere between $2 and $15

I chose an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro because they have better open source drivers (community developed) for they're slightly older stuff, as well as binary support for what's current, but they can't be bothered to release 2.6 AMD64 compiled drivers, and now I'm left wishing I'd bought an Nvidia card just so it would be usable, when I know they have almost no open source support at all..

I want the graphics card companies to realize, when a decently fast graphics card (notice I didn't buy top of the line, so that's a clue to you up and comers) comes out with open source drivers, that's where I'll put my money, and where I'll tell my friends and family to go. You've got to please the geeks, guys, 'cause we influence the purchases of others, as well.
